Tourist Tries to Escape Wheel Clamp by Changing Tyre

Featured Replies

Once again, way too small fine. 2000 baht is a joke.  Make it 20,000 and they might think twice.

I'm English. I go to Phuket annually for my holidays. I enjoy them and I don't cause any problems or make trouble. I have been visiting Thailand for 60 years and never had a problem. I back-packe

So anyone who has been to Thailand, but hasn't been to Phuket or Pattaya, cannot be an idiot?

Did you reflect over the word "most". Since when does that include all. I corrected, but you missed the correction. Good job!

Ah.  So, when asked to confirm, you didn't want to admit that you were wrong, so you effectively said "yes (no)"?  Why not just say you were wrong and you meant most?

When I was back in the UK a few years ago, a car parked opposite my place had been clamped. I was vaguely familiar with the owner who was a local tradesman and always seemed to be very hard up, his car was an old jalopy. While I was making a cup of tea, I saw him pull up in a mate's van. They got out with their tools and proceeded to dismantle the wheel clamp. When that was done, his mate drove off in the van while he stuck the pieces of the clamp in the back of his car and also drove off. I had to give him points for doing a thorough job, but I do wonder what happened when the cops finally caught up with him, he'd have been facing multiple charges including property theft by then, not just a parking charge.

If you remove a council or police wheel clamp it is an offence. However , if it was clamped on private land and you remove it without damaging it and just leave it there there's nothing they can do. I've done that in the past a couple of times. Deflate the tyre which loosens it ,slide the wheel brace behind the loosened plate and remove the nuts and then the wheel. It'll easily then come off . Replace with the spare.

Wasn´t my post clear about that. I was you who quoted that post.

But again! How hard is it to understand. I posted all idiots go to Phuket and Pattaya. Did I post that no one else go there? No I did not!

It´s you who must be careful about what group you feel you belong to. I never posted that you were an idiot.

Surely cheaper to pay the fine than for a new spare wheel, or did they think they were getting a free wheel clamp.🤣🤣

Sometimes tourists do not know how to go about paying the fines and getting the clamp removed especially  when their mode of transport can no longer help them.
Trying to physically remove the clamp may be a lack of foresight and desperation.
once my car was wheel clamped along sukhumvit soi 47 Bangkok . I have no idea how to go about it as there was no note or number to call. Finally I managed to ask local Thai for help. Got onto a motorbike taxi go to the relevant police station , paid the fines and (700tb) got onto the motorbike taxi again back to my car to wait for the police to unclamp . Waste of time indeed. So I believe the tourists would rather just pay the fine if they could rather than going thru the hassle of changing wheel. Just my feedback though.

Tunisian? enough said revoke his visa and send him back

Only time I've been clamped was in Tunisia in the 80s.

Parked the car one evening and left it - so far so good.

Next day leave the hotel and walk down the street towards car where (now lone) car is surrounded by kids and locals, all pointing and prancing around it and generally very amused. It is now the centre of attention in boring, Ramadan Sfax.

Turned out my auto had an even number at end of plate. The day before even numbers were allowed to park where I did (unbeknowing). But next day only odd numbers allowed to park this side of the road.

I gave one of the kids a few dinar and sent him to get the cops, who declamped me for I forget how much.

How much could it have cost to pay the fine and have the clamp removed? My policy ... Admit guilt and move on!

If i am not mistaken the fine for illegal parking is about 500 baht and doesnt require identifcation. Less than $20 usd. Porb Problem solved

I got clamped a long time ago in Phuket town, it was on Yellow and White lines, I didn't even know what it was, (bus stop) even though the cop was there he wouldn't accept payment I had to get motor bike taxi to the police station and pay the fine, It's cheaper to just pay the fine, clown!

Everybody talks to themselves when they think.

But most people don't know how to think.

I parked in a no parking zone and knew it. Was running a quick errand. Well I got clamped. No big deal. Motorcycle took me to the police station, paid the small fine and it was off by the time I got back. No reason to run away from a small fine.

Even stronger, no reason to go yourself. Just have the motorbike taxi sort it all out for you and enjoy a cup of coffee while waiting.

Next time just leave the car there until the end of the cop's shift. He'll take off the clamp before going home...
