Annual checkup at Bangkok Christian Hospital: Anyone with (recent) experience?

Featured Replies

Hi,

It is the time of year again where my annual health checkup is due. Over the last 8 years or so, I've usually done them at BNH and once at Samitivej. But their recommended packages for my age group have gone up and up and up and are now in the 30-35k range, which is too much for me these days.

As a result, I started looking at alternatives and was positively surprised by the Platinum package offered by Bangkok Christian. At TBH 11,990 it includes most of the tests the much more expensive packages at BNH and others include. I have never been to BCH, so I wondered if a member here has some first hand experience, especially with doing one of the health checkup packages. I don't necessarily need the -admittedly nice- "hand-holding" by the nurses like at BNH who always take you from one test/department to the next etc, but I would hate it if the organization at Bangkok Christian would be overly chaotic.

Anyone with recent experience at BCH who can provide some feedback on this? Thank you!

DUS

Up to you, but in my opinion no wellness check is not thourough without an Exercise Stress Test.  Unless, a person does want want a reading on how their heart is functioning.

Also, the BCH plan does not include a PSA, or a couple of other important blood tests.

@DUS no experience with BCH, package looks good though and nice price 👍

I would add ApoB (Apolipoprotein B) blood test, and should be <600 baht.  If theirs is a silly price, N Health does them for <600.  Or any one of the many blood labs will offer at Bangkok.

Can you name the blood tests that are missing? As for PSA: that is included.

Earlier today, I sent them an email asking about various tests (including the EST) and the respective prices.

You can get an EST added to check up package there, I have done it.

No problem with the check up process there, but (as is true in many hospitals) the review at the end by the doctor wasn't worth much. But you'll get all the results to take with you.

by the way, at any hospital it is never necessary to get the package listed for your age, and often best to get a lower end package and just add on to it as needed. The "package" contents are seldom ideal. Among other things, they are geared towards Thai not Western health issues (e.g high incidence of primary liver cancer, which is rare in Westerners) . Looking at the BCH packages, the "Smart" package with PSA and EST added on should be fine.

Note that abdominal ultrasounds are not recommended for routine health screening. Private hospitals like to do them because they tend to uncover a lot of unimportant incidental findings (eg cysts on kidney, liver) which in turn lead to other expensive and unnecessary tests. The abdominal ultrasound is main reason for higher costs in the packages listed for older ages.

I did it there last year. It was organized well enough although it still took like 4 hours (including lunch time in between) to finish all the tests and receive the results. I thought the review by doctor was quite good. She explained in detail all results that were out of the optimal range and suggested the follow ups too.

I see that BNH has tests for up to 50 years old for 10,900 Baht. Maybe the tests for your age are the same, except for a handful of additional tests. For those additional tests, you could go to a government hospital where tests are very cheap. Looking at the list of tests I think a government hospital could do all of them for a much lower price. But the process would take longer.

FWIW, the doctor doing my checkup up at a different Bangkok hospital told me it was not necessary for me to have a stress test (walk/run/incline 12 mins) every year. It may be different if you have a heart condition etc. that needs monitoring, but I don't. I think the cost component for the stress test made up about 5k baht of the total cost, so I found a cheaper package with add-ons, as Sheryl suggested, was a better fit for me.

EST certainly does not need to be done yearly in people without heart disease, but in men over say 40 and post-menopausal women it is a good idea to do every 5 years or so, possibly more often if prior result was borderline or symptoms develop.

I have done my annual check up at Bangkok Christian for several consecutive years and find them to be thorough, professional and most important at least half the price of BNH or other "5-star" hospitals (no Starbucks in the lobby!). They don't always speak perfect English but they do all the tests you opt for and know how to interpret the results. Walk-in same day service. I recommend it.

Not Had an annual checkup there but I did go to outpatients there on a Tuesday with what turned out to be a potentially life threatening neurological syndrome.

Luckily I saw the right doctor on the right day and he diagnosed the thing right away. When I returned the next day as he had predicted they were waiting for me and I was whisked to the wards.

That evening the same doctor came to see me. Explained the treatment and the cost. Asked if I could afford it. I said yes so he said good we'll start tomorrow. No questions about insurance, no requests for credit cards.

Good care. I'm still here so am biased.

I checked here, but the only package they have at 10,900 bath is the <25 yo

No feedback on the health package, but the wife and I between us have had 3 surgeries in recent years at Bangkok Christian and it's a very decent hospital with excellent doctors.

Thank you all for your replies!

To provide one more opinion piece on BCH, I would like to add my personal experience now after having had the checkup yesterday. Maybe someone will stumble across this thread in search of information in the months ahead.

So I went yesterday morning for the "Platinum checkup". I arrived at around 07.30 and headed to the registration counter as it was my first ever visit to this place. Registration went smoothly and took less than 5 minutes. From there it was straight to the heath checkup area on the second floor, where a nurse was immediately available to check me in. During this quick process, I was also allowed to choose a doctor from a list of around 10 or so with whom I would like to discuss my results later on.

It was easy to communicate with both doctors and nurses in English. Whilst the building has at times more the flair of a government hospital (compared to the so-called "5* hospitals like BNH etc) I was impressed with the efficiency and speed at which the whole check-up was conducted. Took less than 3 hours for the original checkup booked. It was nice that at all times a member of the staff would take you from one department/room to the next, always doing the communication with the department staff informing them on what I was there for etc. Easy going, and actually better than my one-time experience at Samitivej where I was only given directions on where to go next etc. including changing building complexes etc. So a big thumbs up from me for BCH.

Once all test results were in (I headed back to the department at 10:30 after using the food voucher in the food court) the doctor spent a lot of time explaining and discussing the results. I was very happy with that!

Given that I only paid a fraction of the price BNH & Co would have asked for, I will definitely visit BCH again for future tests.

On a side note, given one specific test result and a family history of issues with that one, it was suggested to me to see an Endocrinologist about it. I accepted and was seen by one 90 minutes later. Due to a pre-existing condition, I also asked for an appointment with a spine specialist, who I was also able to see within minutes after reviewing the general test results. So, yes, very happy with the doctors and the overall experience/process.

Follow-up reports like his one are so useful, I wish more users would take the time to write and post them so "Thank you!" OP.

I've been using BCH for many years as my hospital of choice and have never been let down by them.  Professional and competent always, never pushing unnecessary tests and procedures and reasonable fees.

I usually suggest the Apo B test as an add on, as a measure of health risk.  As the vid below states, you can estimate this with your Lipid panel #s.   Which I just did, knowing my Apo B # is 88, and close enough.  One caveat, is if your Trig is very high, then a different formula.   Though if your Trig that high, then you got issues   :cheesy:

As the adjusted trig #, didn't change the final # much at all.

My Apo B, along with using the formula
