In a recent ruling, the Thai Supreme Court has sentenced famed rocker Sek Loso, real name Seksan Sukpimai, to 2 years and 12 months in prison without parole. The charges stem from resisting arrest, illegal drug use, and possession of firearms and ammunition during a police raid on his home in 2017.

On 20th May, the Min Buri Criminal Court delivered the Supreme Court’s verdict. Sek faced charges filed by prosecutors, which included obstructing law enforcement, drug abuse, and unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, as per Thailand's Firearms and Ammunition Act of 1947.

The case dates back to 31st December 2017, when Sek was apprehended at his residence following a warrant issued for shooting firearms unnecessarily. During the arrest, Sek resisted and threatened officers with a gun, necessitating special units to assist in his capture.

Originally, Sek was tried and sentenced on 25th October 2018. The first court found him guilty on all counts: six months for firearm possession, reduced for confession, one and a half years for obstructing officers, and an additional six months for drug use.

Combined with a previous one-year-three-month suspended sentence for assault, his total sentence reached 2 years and 21 months.

Despite his claims of suffering from bipolar disorder at the time of the offence, the initial court did not accept this defence due to evidence showing he was aware of his actions.

The Court of Appeal later reduced the offence related to possessing a licensed gun of another to three months, leading to a combined verdict similar to the initial trial. However, it upheld the sentence execution without parole.

In the final verdict, the Supreme Court has slightly modified the sentence to 2 years, 12 months, and 20 days in prison. Subsequently, Sek was taken to Min Buri Remand Prison to begin serving his sentence.

Wow, that sucks. Didn’t know he was a headbanger like that.
Strange ruling though: 2y, 12m, 20 days. Why not just say 3y, 20d? Or perhaps 1y, 24m, 20d, or 36 and a bit months, or 1115 days even?

Anything but a "one hit wonder".

He has been a successful rock musician, singer, and songwriter since the early '90s when he founded the group Loso.

He went on to an immensely popular solo career that was interrupted by frequent run-ins with the law.

His luck just ran out.

No penthouse suite?  Guess he doesn't have enough pull.

Sad I don't like to see people sent down except for extreme violence and/or kiddy fiddling; certainly not drugs. One consolidation is that he'll have plenty of pals inside

I remember he spent some time in London playing rock (rumors were he was very talented). I have his single Red Bicycle on my phone and cannot believe he wasted his talent on drug and several wives/girlfriends. Bye bye Sek.

This is his biggest hit song, but not the only one.

Yes, Indeed. He's a very talented musician. And I love his music. I sincerely hope there will be a lot of good things coming out of this jail sentence and that he will benefit of a Royal pardon to shorten his sentence.

Best regards.

Not at all. However, I can see that if perhaps someone is exclusively into say, jazz, rap or, gawd forbid, c&w.

His talent ran out as well 😁 Along with Carabao he's often the only other Thai singer most foreigners have heard of. Left to do some shopping last time he came on stage.

At least he's going to jail.

Certain people in other countries get found guilty, then sentencing gets delayed until they're elected to a position where the Supreme Court says they can't be jailed.

Oh come on, you have no idea, and a whole lot of it. I saw Sek Loso live in Europe, unlike Carabao.

Amazing all these sudden Thai music fans on here, who never post a thing about it until somebody dies or gets prison 😁

You have no idea what you're talking about. Sek Loso and his band LoSo were hugely popular. They sang about the lives of working people (lo-so as opposed to HiSo), and, like Ad Carabao, Loso (he and his band) were the people's favorites. But in Thailand you're not supposed to make the working class seem like they have some prestige - hence the establishment hated this guy (and Carabao for that matter). Just like the cop that everyone liked 'Big Joke' - the establishment went after Sek. Even Carabao was in self-exile for a while too I recall. Another example is Tata Young ('Sexy, Naughty, Bitchy') - she had a big following but the establishment hated her too. Not sweet Thai - and didn't have some long Thai last name - worse still for the snobs, it was a farang name.

Justice is always 'selective' here. Thai TV through the years has shown CCTV of well-connected people gunning down others in broad daylight (shopping center, gas station restroom. etc.). They rarely face any real jail time. You need to be on the 'right' side of the tracks here if you want to act with impunity. Does RedBull kid ring a bell?

No idea? been been a Thai music fan for over 30 years and been to over 1200 concerts in Thailand must have posted over 100 times about Thai music on here. Carabao was a yellow shirt not an actual social rebel, that was just posing, when did he run away in exile? He was always establishment and a Prayut supporter who he referred to as his brother. Tata young started at the top with a million selling album, then worked her way down. She became more unpopular as time went on for her attitude, weaker material and 'charity' work, there is no evidence the establishment hated her at all and her name had nothing to do with her decline. If foreign names were disadvantage why did Jonas Anderson and Christy Gibson never have any problems with thier names? Christy had several awards for services to Thai culture, language and music. But then she had a different attitude to Tata.

The whole notion of phua cheewit and rock singers championing the rights and aspirations of the working class is largely not true after the early days with bands like caravan. Luktung has been the genre which gave the working class some pride and identity, reflecting their struggles hopes and problems more than any other genre.

If you think multi millionaire phua cheewit performers give a toss about the working class you are the one who has no idea.
