Lanta is very dull, but tolerable in high season. The horrendous roads and unsightly main drag don’t do it any favors. Hua Hin’s alright, and at least looks okay. People say CM is dull (?), but that is typically from Pattaya types so doesn’t count… the latter, while not dull, well into ‘dump’ category. Depends what you’re after I guess, but PLok, Sukothai town, Chiang Rai and Koh Samet are proper boooring.

They're all nice places to visit for a few days, but I wouldn't live there.

As for Pattaya, it's usually called a dump by those who've never been there, or by those who, when they do, never leave the red-light districts and think the whole city is like that. It's like saying Bangkok is a dump because you've never left Soi Cowboy.

I also found Lampang dull.  Worked there for a few weeks about 15 years ago, dull as dust.

As for koh Lanta, I also lived there briefly about 2 years ago,  Nice beach, but depressing because of the 'black crows'.  I've learnt that living in a Muslim area is depressing, no-one wants to see walking black tents all day.....

Soi Cowboy at 11:40 p.m. on New Year's Eve.

yes, I'm the most interesting man in the world.

my dullest is most people's fantasies.

most of the time, I want dull.  give me the sounds of nature.  Ploy screaming over her sick buffalo, Item coughing all night, Ohm drinking at 8 a.m., and M with a customer in my bathroom gets old.

Krabi when it’s rainy season, drive 5 hours from Satun so we could do a tour to Similan Islands & trip was cancelled because of the weather, spent 4 days in the hotel just waiting for the flight back (I’d have bailed but she won’t leave an already paid for hotel).

Great if you want to eat Indian food for breakfast, lunch & dinner, not so great if you like Thai food & especially Pork (much more Muslim oriented than when I visited 17 years ago).

Won’t be back.

Chumporn town. Not only one of the dullest places in Thailand but also one of the ugliest towns in Thailand.

The Old Time bar and restaurant is okay for a visit and Chumphon is a natural stop if you heading for the islands or Krabi.  Most cities outside the western tourist stream is dull in Thailand, if you not in to temples. Not much to see or experience.

But still a few nice villages and smaller places worth visiting travelling around.

Yes. Dull is- to quote the Royal Marines -"a state of mind" .  "Maybe you already have it".

One can be sat in a bar full of students at 1 AM with loud music and flashing lights...etc and it is still dull.

Or you could be sat at a tin table on Sukumvit at 3 AM with some mates with good conversation skills and a few Leo's and it is not dull. 6 AM? "What's that noise" ? Oh <deleted> it is the BTS.  I have to be at work at 8.30!!

Thailand ain't all that..

That's why everyone is going to Vietnam.

Who is everyone? FTYI Thailand tourist arrivals 2024 - 35 million.  Vietnam tourist arrivals -17.5 million.

You forget thailand has a lot transit arrivals not actual tourists. Also many backpackers stay 1-2 months in vietnam nowadays, most tourists here do not.

I found Lampang to be fairly dull. Expected more but was disappointed. Nice enough place but wouldn't hurry to return.
