SUPREME HEADQUARTERS
ALLIED EXPEDITIONARY FORCE

Soldiers, Sailors, and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force!

You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hope and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on other Fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.

Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped and battle-hardened. He will fight savagely.

But this is the year 1944! Much has happened since the Nazi triumphs of 1940-41. The United Nations have inflicted upon the Germans great defeats, in open battle, man-to-man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced their strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Our Home Fronts have given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions of war, and placed at our disposal great reserves of trained fighting men. The tide has turned! The free men of the world are marching together to Victory!

I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full Victory!

Good luck! And let us beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking.

If only.  And the only way to prevent wars is to present enough ability to win one that an aggressor chooses to not start one.  Sadly in human nature that is currently the only solution.

And the only way to present strength is to spend money on war making.  Catch 22.

I realize that. They said the bomb would stop all wars yet here we are.

A fundamental shift in our society and how we think and live is needed.

But its only ever talked about. We all  myself included need to be willing to sacrifice. But selfishness rules the day.

God Bless them, dont they look young!

Probably all gone now, including those that survived. Let us remember their sacrifice, always.

I don’t know if any of you guys have seen the Pima air museum many many acres of aircraft I toured their pristine example of a b17 thinking of the guys trapped in those things going down in flames…..just horrific especially when you factor in they were dressed for high altitude…..it wasn’t a quick death for many.then looking at the rest of the aircraft thinking of the money and talent to create it all…..all such a waste…in the last hanger all the way in the corner is a trainer for an oka kamikaze rocket plane were they would teach some terrified teenager to crash into a ship….it really brought it home to me we need to do better.

Arromanches, visited here some years ago, Parts of the Mullberry harbour still visible.

Sainte-Mère-Église, American Airborne landing site. The church still has a model of the para that landed there, and survived. Stained glass has images of the Airbourne forces

Ever been to the northern coast of France? My dad took us there when I was younger. Went up and down the whole coast visited most of the landing sites.

Was something else.

I actually spoke to the cafe owner, she was a very young girl when this happened, she showed us the kitchen table where some wounded Paras were treated.

Looks like a screen capture from Band of Brothers.

Yet when it comes to ukriane, Putin must be defeated no matter what,  so people keep dying, which contradicts everthing you wrote above.

Yes, of course you're correct. Everyone should have surrendered to Hitler and the axis. Look at all the people that wouldn't have died.

Are you forgetting how many Russians died in that war fighting Hitler?

Saving Private Ryan - had an amazing depiction of the invasion...

RIP young fellows...

Obviously not enough,

Your Russia signed a non-aggression pact with Hitler, did you forget....?

Your Russia at the time didn't give a stuff about Hitlers onslaught through Europe until the pact was put in the trash.....🙄

So you wish more Russians that were fighting for your side were dead... I did like to see you say that to Russian mans face.

It's not just the Russians. I also blame the idiot scientist that gave them the nuke technology. Clearly there's not enough intelligence there to have done it themselves.

Been there.  Live about 2 hours by car from it.  Off topic but the Sonoran Desert Museum is also a great visit in the area.  When I went it was actually raining and amazing.

The floating tanks didn’t all work ,some sank due to the rough weather and guys drowned

Exactly. Stalin was quite happy with the agreement and fulfilling his commitments, until Hitler betrayed him.
