The Department of Land Transport (DLT) is warning the public about the increasing sale of counterfeit licence plates on platforms like Facebook and TikTok.

DLT spokesman Seksom Akraphand cautioned against purchasing these plates due to risks of receiving fake items and potential personal data breaches.

Vehicle owners in Bangkok are urged to reserve licence plate numbers via the DLT website, while those in other regions should visit provincial DLT offices.

For desirable "lucky" numbers, Mr. Seksom recommends participating in auctions by the Road Safe Fund. These plates feature unique designs and legally transferable numbers.

Legitimate plates from the DLT are identified by specific features such as the raised "Khor Sor" abbreviation, a watermark of the DLT's emblem, and clear, reflective lettering.

Special auction plates include graphic backgrounds and distinctive combinations. Seksom stressed that using or producing fake plates incurs severe penalties.

Manufacturers of fake plates face charges for document forgery under Section 265 of the Criminal Code. Users of such plates risk charges under Section 268, facing imprisonment from six months to five years and fines up to 100,000 baht.

Incorrectly displaying licence plates can also lead to fines up to 2,000 baht, warned Mr. Seksom.

ROFLOL - if the RTP actually enforced the road laws in any meaningful way, then getting these fake plates would be a worry. But in their complete absence of doing anything aside from reading the registration sticker date on the window as you slowlyu go past their 'highway safety campaign' (monthly cash acquisition), it seems to me that these fake plates would be ideal way for locals to avoid speeding fines - not that I am recommending that of course.

sounds like it is much cheaper to run around on fake plates - than to buy the real thing . i cant think of anything interesting i'd have on a plate here ...and then i bought a new bike and the red plate is 808......which is pretty much my favourite number right now after 808 state an old school tune. my mate had 0E30 on his porsche back in uk - looked kinda cool...i suppose some titty bar supremo has bought 80085...lol

Fake plates, fake driving licences, no number plates fitted, sprayed over plates, no helmets , blacked out windows so the driver can't be seen on the phone, school kids five on a motorbike , no licence, no helmets...... the police don't give a s... ?

It seems the whole traffic scene is declining into anarchy.

All the things you mentioned plus many many more: buses driving against the traffic, jumping red lights, motorcycles on footpaths, more and more motorcycles with modified exhausts making sleeping at night difficult. illegal parking (obstructing traffic), and the list goes on.

This world is full of fakes, from the silliest things to fake people, and fake people are the worst.

(and some forums contributors among them)

Funny. Try that in USA and  you'll be wearing an orange jumpsuit.
