Pattaya’s Nightlife Workers Receive Aid Amid Tourism Slump

Pattaya's bar workers found solace this week through a charitable effort, as dwindling tourist numbers leave many struggling to make ends meet. Lisa Hamilton, President of the Pattaya Nightlife Business Association, spearheaded the initiative on Walking Street yesterday, offering essential supplies like dry food, eggs, instant noodles, and over 200 bowls of hot soup to bar employees hit hardest by the downturn.

With foreign visitors, especially Chinese tourists, noticeably absent, workers such as servers, cleaners, and security guards face uncertainty. Hamilton emphasised their plight, noting how many are barely managing rent and daily needs. “This effort is about easing the burden on those who keep Pattaya’s nightlife vibrant,” she explained. “They’re the backbone of our economy, and they need support.”

Hamilton and local business owners funded the aid themselves but cautioned that these grassroots efforts aren't a long-term solution. “The government must act swiftly. The decline in tourists from Europe, the US, the Middle East, and China has us on the brink. Tourism is vital here, and we’re struggling to survive.”

In a bid to revitalise the sector, the government has launched the Thai Half-Half Travel programme. This initiative offers domestic tourists subsidies of up to 3,000 Thai Baht (approximately £70) per night on accommodations and meals. Officially starting today after its recent booking launch, the programme, managed by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), aims to revive destinations like Pattaya by providing 500,000 travel rights. These allow travellers up to five discounted nights—three in major cities and two in smaller locations.

Despite these efforts, there remains scepticism among nightlife workers. “It’s a kind gesture,” remarked a bartender on Walking Street, “But we need tourists back, not just noodles.”

The combination of community-driven initiatives and government schemes highlights the urgent need for a broader return to normalcy. While the Half-Half Travel programme seeks to stimulate local tourism, the echoing sentiment on the ground is clear: foreign visitor numbers need a boost to ensure the survival of Pattaya's renowned nightlife scene.

As Pattaya braces for the coming months, the community's resilience shines through, but the path forward remains uncertain without a significant influx of international tourists.

Not fond of a bang gang

Do you really think that giving out hot soup is any good. Most "entertainment" workers get more than that from one drink...greed by foreign business owners is the only downfall

Some of the girls can always do some real work and get in the fields to pick the rice.

Just the usual Bs story about low/high season for something to talk about.

so how about the hoards of indian nationals taking over the city , they don't go there?

One of the biggest problems is the greed of the Landlords charging exorbitant rents, the Thai always know how to cut their nose off to spite their face...

Go to a city with no crowds then.

The low season so not entirely surprising. However, the Thai govt policy of favouring high numbers of low spending tourists was always going to result in a decline in a profitable nightlife

So has nothing to do with Thailands currency manipulation

Yuan down 10% against Baht

Yuan up 5% against Vietnamese currency thats a 15% difference.

The kidnapping of Chinese who are held for ransom.

That the Chinese Tour Group Sellers are all pushing travel to Vietnam as being the in place right now.

It's low rainy season.

Dual pricing and Scams on Foreigners.

Maybe the DAC Digital Arrival Card.

Businesses wanting budget travelers to now pay higher almost western prices for things.

The Flip Flopping on smoking a certain plant.

I do believe Thailand is trying to do the right thing by tightening Banking Standards, cracking down on Scam Call Centers, making it harder to obtain multiple SIM cards, cracking down on the parking nightmare in Pattaya.  Most of these impact people who live here vs visit.

Maybe take a look at  what is happening away from Walking Street.  The north end of Pattaya Beach has lots going on.  The massive Centre Point 3 resort under construction is now highly visible on the skyline.  Nearby, a number of new businesses have opened across from Terminal 21, including several large restaurants.   A companion highrise condo tower is going up next to Once Pattaya.  In Jomtien/Pratamnak, lots of construction underway, including new highrises from Riviera and Copocabana and a new condo highrise from Arom, which recently finished a condo tower in Wongamat.  Plus, many others.

Central Festival had what I consider a nice amount of business going on yesterday.  We were able to find a place to park in the parking garage--sometimes Festival has been just too busy and it's not been a pleasant experience.  Yesterday was good--although the bank we were going to was packed.

Spouse and I were also at the new Land Office yesterday, selling a house.  As usual, even though it's new, parking was at a premium, as was a place to sit once you were inside.  Lots of buying and selling taking place.  In 15 years of going to the land office from time to time, I have never once found it to not be busy.  Pity they didn't build a much bigger facility with a much bigger parking lot--especially since it's in the middle of nowhere with lots of empty land around it.   On the plus side, when we were ready to leave I was able to auction off my soon-to-be-vacant chair for a cool 500 baht--just kidding.  But, it may come to that, the place is so busy.

Obviously, if you live here year-round and are even the least bit observant, you'll be well-aware that Pattaya is booming.   I haven't even touched on the tremendous building going on over on the Darkside, with new housing projects starting literally daily.

Most of the new projects--all over Pattaya--are away from Walking Street.  And, I suspect, many of the new tourists and residents are spending their time in other areas, as well, which don't seem to be suffering too much of a drop in business.   The new 50/50 domestic tourist scheme likely won't help Walking Street that much, but should be beneficial to other Pattaya tourist areas.

There are more than plenty of jobs anywhere in Thailand even for lower skilled staff. All this whining over the poor left-behinds at Pattaya's walking street is barking up the wrong tree.

Almost any restaurant anywhere in Thailand, be it Korat, Udon, Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai, has signs out "looking for staff".

All those do-gooders and tree huggers might have to learn Thai reading and then tell those suffering underlings, that one has to WORK for money!

Not sure that girls who earn thousands of baht doing short-times with farangs would like to spend all day working in the fields under the burning sun to earn a few hundreds baht

No matter what color the people are are I don't like taking vacations where I might want to take a late night stroll on the beach only to be met by a sea of low rent tourists sleeping there.

You might consider that my post had nothing to do with race. It was big news not long ago that that people were complaining about all the Indians sleeping on the beach. If it were Chinese I still would'nt like it and people would also complain.

Maybe you are looking for a fight? Not here bud.

Actually, I know some girls do go home to help plant the crops, then return to harvest... I'm surprised you didn't know this
