Is Jomtien beach water safe for swimming?

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

Years ago I used to baht bus down to Jomtien and swim and it was ok. Now, neglecting likely big runoff from these heavy rains, is the water there safe for swimming?  I know now and then I have read about discharges and stuff, but in general is it safe, maybe further down the stretch of beach?  One of my friends finally booked his Thailand trip and liked the idea of pattaya but he really wanted some beach time without traveling to Phuket Karon beach, or Krabi Ao Nang, or other places.  I told him day trips to Koh Larn would be OK as maybe a few days down on Ko Samet.

  • Yes. Just don't put your head under.

  • No, and it hasn’t been safe for many years. I stay I jomtien and walk the prom every day. The things I’ve see, photos hard to believe. Stick to the pool .

  • Ive never had a pool infection. One can usually see a dodgy pool. I try to swim in well maintained, less crowded salt water pools.

Not even the pools can be safe

Pools can indeed be a source of eye and ear infections due to bacteria and other microorganisms that thrive in poorly maintained or overcrowded water environments. Conjunctivitis (pink eye) and swimmer's ear are two common infections that can result from swimming in contaminated pools

I love salt water pools.  My sister has one here in the USA.  where are the salt water pools in Jomtien or Pattaya that maybe allow pay for day use in case I am not a guest in that hotel?

Find a condominium who have salt water pools and rent there

I wouldn't worry. If you want to go for a swim in the beach, go for it.

Buy some 90% alcohol small bottle and always fill up your ears after swimming in pools or beach.

People have been asking if Pattaya and Jontiem beach are safe to swim for years. Back in-the-day you could boat out and look down and see the sand thru the clear water, (as told by Fr. Brennan) so I suppose since then people will argue it's never been safe.

This goes back to the same old answer. Look where you are and who is taking care of things and by extension what you are paying.

I started getting ear infections from the pool. One ear swelled up and I could not hear through that ear. I did not figure out what was going on for a good while until I determined it was the pool. It was one of those large resort type pools you see all over in Pattaya that come attached to those cheap resort type condo rooms. I don't think many are maintained correctly. It takes some skill to keep pool water just right and the Thsi's probably don't have a lot of training or interest in that area unless it's a top end hotel.

I would risk a spa pool as the people there seem to have more knowledge about water and that sort of thing. Of course, you're paying for a spa experience to get it.

90% alchohol?

Can you provide some evidence ad source please. Utterly stupid advise, and dangerous

Earplugs designed for swimming is the solution to prevent infections. When that is said, Jomtien is heavily polluted especially in rain season, and I wouldn’t take my chance during the dry season either

Sorry 70% 🙂

The first and last time I went swimming there, I brought a mask and snorkel. There was 0% visibility and I had to fight a pair of men's red undershorts trying to keep me from getting out of the water. No thanks.

I would go to California if you want to go into the ocean without stepping on a plastic bag

Where do you mean by Jomtien? That's a very long stretch of water melding into Dongtan Beach, then Yim Yam, and then around the corner the small beach under the restaurant Cabbages & Condoms and then the beach at Cozy Beach! So you have a choice of half a dozen beaches AND the big long Pattaya beach and the sea there.

Also..look up Aquaear, but the bottles of 70% alcohol are cheaper.

It wasn't safe the only time I ever swam near the Cosy B. years ago. Shoals of floaters and neutrally buoyant turds.

It may have changed for the better but i wouldn't be game to check.

Happy holidays!

25 years ago had a swim at jomtien beach.

First and last time.

Only use condo pool from then onwards.

Personally, I stay in a very small condo, not even 20 rooms. All kept spotless. There’s not many shorter stays like me ( 4/5 months) most are retired gentleman. It’s all under control there, no hookers/ ladyboys or guests allowed. The pool is checked every morning  and the security is real, not falling asleep.
I have stayed in one 4* + a few months ago and the pool was icky.
My bangkok hotel is super clean too, everything. I love the open kitchen which shines. Not all Thais take care like this, unfortunately.

I live in the south of France from April to November more or less, and it’s perfectly government checked all the time. The water is crystal clean mostly except near the private ports , although even then they are strictly watched .
If you don’t get the Blue flag you’re done for. That’s probably why France is number 1 for tourist arrivals..  That’s what Thailand lacks, otherwise it would be heaven again, like in the early 80s when I arrived.

Thailand refuses to disclose the water quality for its tourist resort areas.

You can draw your own conclusions  why.

Bad advice. The water quality at too many Thai beaches is poor. There is raw sewage and industrial effluent. Placing alcohol in  your ears will do more harm than good. The alcohol dries out the protective layer of skin in the ear, damages the hairs needed for hearing and protection and  damages the wax which protects the ear.  Alcohol will not protect against many of the contaminants too.

Bad Visibility is not a sign of polluted water, but we know Jomtien and Pattaya have polluted beaches, so bad Visibility makes it even feel more bad

I've never swam in Pattaya Bay or anywhere on Jomtien Beach in the last 42 years.  Even back then they were complaining about the water.

Not a swimmer are you. Use the alcohol after the swim.

How will the alcohol stop a brain eating amoeba or dusrupt parasites or multiple viruses? And what if the damage alcohol does to the ear canal chemistry? How will alcohol prevent eustachian tube migration?  In effect a false sense of security like food servers and their plastic gloves.

A few km south of Bang Saray, you'll find Sai Kaew Beach. It's a navy beach. The water there is gorgeous.

Boy...if you go to a chemist for swimming ear trouble they probably give you Aquaear (brand name) to dry out your ear to help stop infections.

Aquaear is basically alcohol but costs much more.

For your worries about these other exotic things, yes don't swim ever and wear a condom to bed just in case. Happy? 🙂
