The life certificate they send by post has your name in their script written at the top, it then has your N.I. number printed in a box.

I did email them once stating I have not received A LC, they sent me one to download, but I can't remember if it had my details on it...

Not for the UK, just as an information. The German pension agency has started to send a letter with a personal QR code. You can than do proof of life within an app, it just takes 3 minutes.

Isn't this an example of just how sleepy and antiquated the British civil service can be? It's not really a political matter just the inertia of stuck in the mud bureaucrats.Having said that a Ministerial order could introduce a change to online submissions in one stroke. Those who prefer a paper exchange could opt for one.In short there is absolutely no reason why proof of life cant be done online.

My Pension was stopped in June. I suspected that it was a LC issue. Called them on the 7777 number and after going though security checks I was told it was for non receipt of a  LC ( I did not receive one). Was then told that Pension would be reinstated without the need to send them a LC. Payment was made 5 days later.

Maybe it works for you. Good luck.

On my proof of life certificate which was emailed to me it states "and use the reply envelope sent with this form"  This was emailed to me so what envelope are they on about?

Can I not just post it in the normal way with a normal envelope?

Yes, you will need the correct address for it..

The correct address is on the form Trans. Why do they say "use the reply envelope"? What reply envelope?

Agreed - no reason why this can't be IMHO done through the Govt Gateway, on which a fair few of us are registered in any event.

With the paper version of the form DWP normally encloses a flimsy 9"x4" return envelope. I personally use rather more robust envelopes for sending my witnessed life certs in given the tortuous journey that they need to take before eventually landing in a DWP in-tray in Newcastle upon Tyne in, hopefully, one piece.

Yes I agree.

It's very secure, but unfortunately they don't seem as efficient as private pension companies.

Indeed they are not, particularly when it comes to their insistence on receiving witnessed life certs by snail mail in paper form and over-fussiness on their part as to which individuals (who must be non-family in any event) can perform the witnessing function (as if a life cert was just as valuable as a passport which in certain - but by no means all - cases is subject to similar witnessing requirements: come on!).

Contrast this with the similar declaration of entitlement which I had to provide for my Civil Service pension also at the start of the year - where I was able to get my mother-in-law to perform the honours and then email her signed declaration back to the UK!

The same story here, my pension was stopped last month even though I've been in regular communication with them about claiming a Dutch State pension. I guessed it would be a PoL certificate that hadn't arrived and was about to try calling them when suddenly a dozen foreign letters all arrived in my mailbox at the same time, not having received any post from abroad so far this year. These included a personal letter sent to me from Glasgow on 6/1/25, the DWP PoL certificate sent around the same date, and a query from the SVB (the Dutch equivalent to the DWP) about my claim sent in early March. I'd like to blame the pensions people, and maybe part of the delay is their fault, but the fact that almost every letter sent to me from overseas in the first 3 or 4 months of the year, and sent via different methods and postal services in three or four countries, arrived here on the same day indicates to me that the main problem lies here with Thai Post.

The fact is that it took over 23 weeks for the PoL request to arrive when they only give you 16 weeks from the date of issue to return it. I don't know whose fault it is and have no way of finding out, but it's not acceptable and I'm filing an official complaint with DWP and asking my MP to pursue it on my behalf. Although it's a bit paranoid, I can at least appreciate them refusing to send anything containing personal information via e-mail. The blank PoL certificate doesn't have anything personal on it so why can't they just e-mail us that and ask us to return it? There are other ways of doing it. They once e-mailed me a form containing some personal information as a password-protected PDF file, with the password being my NI number. That worked fine, so why not save themselves the cost of foreign postage and use that route?

I agree with you that Thailand Post do appear to be the principal culprits in your case. However, the delay in your receiving the latest life cert request has probably also been compounded by DWP's apparently over-riding obsession with issuing such requests at the bare minimum postal cost to themselves (through using some 10th class mailing service, as it were).

For the future, I can only suggest that you look out for reports on here of upcoming exercises relating to Thailand, and then jump into action on the basis of the templates downloadable via the following link:

This is what I did in the case of the latest exercise a few months ago, with the result that my fresh life cert was received at Wolverhampton on 29 January, which was nearly a whole month before the DWP correspondence finally turned up in our mailbox here on 25 February!
