Fascinating article in this weeks Economist.

On Valentine’s Day this year, when I was, somewhat depressingly, in Addis Ababa airport rather than enjoying a romantic dinner with my wife, I stumbled on a paper asking whether men and women can be friends. The traditional view is that this is hard because, as Harry said to Sally in the film, “the sex part always gets in the way.”

My best friend in the whole world I've known my whole life. We started the same day in Kindergarten. We tried to kiss once in our mid teens and both recoiled saying "nah that don't work"

She's Godmother to both my daughters and I know no matter where I was in the world if I needed help she'd be there for me.

So I believe men and women can just be besties.

Thoughts.

ideally, the spouse/gf should be also your best friend, but doesn't always work out that way.

doesn't cause envy from the spouse that you're better friends with another female than your own spouse?

i wouldn't want my wife/gf being best friends with another dude. it's the same as if she's sleeping with him to me.

too many cooks spoil the broth.

There is some truth to that.

I know the first time I was introduced to my besties then boyfriend subsequent husband, there was some 'tension'

to the title ...

... Yes, and I had a lot of female friends, definitely more than male friends.  Some friends with bennies, some not, and even the ones with bennies, didn't mean we had sex every time we hung out.

One lesbian friend, use to hang out with, when her partner was out of town on business.  Just friends from childhood, and gave her good cover about her alternative lifestyle, as not accepted back then.

Most men would F'up a female friendly relationship, by making constant passes.  Miss out on special relationship by not taking no for an answer.   Be surprised what good female friends confide in you about male friends you thought you knew, when they trust you.   Some real Aholes out there.

Why I distance myself from most males, and never looking for or wanting male friends.

BS.  You are her fall back guy. A safe bloke to turn to when needed. Grow a pair and grow up.

Can Men and Women just be friends

For what.

Females

If they didn't have a pussy they wouldn't have a friend in the world.

Joking 😂

The uterus is my favourite organ.

Ha ha, sorry, I've been on the drink tonight.

They have a lovely oral cavity.

Did I just stumble on a kindergarten chat forum?!

If you haven't worked out yet that of course men and women can just be friends, then I'd say you're beyond help....

Homosexual men reportedly express the same sentiments in respect to the rectum.

There are also fetish websites that feature the insertion of fists and forearms into the orifices you mention. Do you consider the people who do that, your friends as well?

Yes! Most certainly.  Without a doubt.  My best friend is a woman. I have no interest in sports etc. No. I'm not gay. Women make better friends.

That's a little too much info about your interest 😎

If there's no sexual chemistry there sure it could work. Might be different if there's a history though, especially if one of them becomes romantically involved elsewhere.

In the words of B.B. King:

"But when two real good lovers start bein' real good friends
You know that's the beginning of the end"

I would never want to be friends with an ugly, fat woman.   Being seen in public how gross.

Of course I will tell the attractive ones we can be friends. But, that is not the ultimate goal.

Fatty girls are cute

I'm kinda with you on that.

I was never into sports, which pushed you into the High School 'he must be gay' category

I liked hanging out with the girls, no pressure it was just easy.

That being said, my best male friend who also hung out with us, was absolutely gay just to reinforce the stereotype.

Of course back then we didn't talk about 'gay'

Years ago men could only talk about football, women had better chat. I like women as friends, I have a Thai lawyer friend for 7 years, had sex in the early days not interested in that now with her, gets it out the way I guess

That's pretty shallow (Hal). Who cares what others think if you have a fat friend? Their opinions about anyone mean nothing. A large percentage of people worldwide are fat. Better to be friends with a fat person than a stuck up egotist who thinks they're better than others.

It's true that the best friends you can have while married are other married friends, meaning ones you can trust. The man has his buddy, the wives have their confidants. Doing things together gets them close. There's no reason a wife should be close to a male friend,as it creates jealousy, and the same for a married male having a close female friend. Problems you don't need.
