Painting by the builders!

Having fencing replaced that involves hollow steel bars, bare metal. Bought primer and top coat gloss. They ignored the primer and just used the gloss on bare metal. Is it best to go over that with primer and gloss again or give it another coat of gloss? lazy buggers. I expect as it is it will start to peel off in a year or two

What metal is it, steel (galvanised or not), stainless or ...

Was it painted with red or white oxide first?

A few photos would be useful.

Strip the paint, acid etch or sand blast. Paint with two-part epoxy and be done with it.

Can't be bothered with all that

You need to sand down as much as possible, at least to make a surface the primer can stick to.

Depending how much you are willing to spend on the gate. How much you pay for it?

Is the topcoat an acrylic, or an alkyd?

If it is an acrylic, the paint will be falling off in a few months. Rust bleeding through after the next rain.

Did you pay before work was done ? If not tell them to fix it or no payment.

Whatever is painted on top of what is there now may eventually peel off.

Offered to buy them that they said no need

You are the boss. You tell them what you want and what to do. If they don't like it, find somebody that can follow your instructions.

Are you giving instructions directly or does your wife have to translate for you?

Don't believe them. Ask them to remove the old paint with thinner or sandpaper and paint it properly to your specifications. If it is too late, remember next time you must supervise workmen all of the time to stop them before they try to cut corners.

Gloss

Gloss paints come in both acrylic and alkyd formulations.

If the builders were using water to clean up their brushes, they were using acrylics.

Did they even wash it with acetone or similar before painting? Black steel is usually quite dirty with rust, grease and dirt on it.

If the gate was cheap, I would just use it until it doesnt look so good anymore, and then get it sandblasted and repainted as it should or just get a new one built in the meantime.

How much did you pay for the work getting it done?

Trust me, now 7 and 6 years later from when we started building, it starts creeping up on my wife why I was so frustrated and angry at times, because they didn’t do what I told them to do. But, the work was cheap and quick and know we start fixing the problems as it shows.

It is not always how it works, especially if you use wife as the middle man to get things done

No washing, this is the steel they swore is treated so only needs one coat, the other one I wanted to get, more expensive they say needed two. As long as it lasts a few years, probably be gone by then. 3k baht for 3 blokes from 8am- 6.30 pm, wife though it was expensive!

The steel prices is high 😱 😄

Well! Then I wouldn't cry to much. As said someone can repaint it later and do it properly. The weldings needs zink cost when they starts to rust. Just use a steel brush and clean them, then acetone, primer and whatever you got
