Thai Baht and it's continued strength

WTF is going on with the Thai Baht? As an Australian renovating a home in Thailand in preparation for my retirement next year it is killing me! It's down 12% over the last financial year! With the turmoil of the Thai parliament/government lately you would think it would take a dive.

Does  huge gold reserves keep it artificially high?

Always bear in mind that the rich and powerful in Thailand invest heavily overseas, in property and in stocks, hence the almost permanent over valuation of the Baht.

Anyone who confidently forecasts short term FX movements is a mug.

In my 30 years of expat existence, it's all swings (win) & roundabouts (lose).   Given the unsustainable global debt levels, the general consensus seems to be that Real Assets [Property; PMs and other Commodities] are the places to be in the medium term.

The AUD is a Commodity Currency - go figure it's likely direction

The USD has seen a similar fall in its value against the THB over the past year - for reasons we are well aware of, though (i.e. Trump's tariffs):

https://www.xe.com/currencycharts/?from=USD&to=THB&view=1Y

European currencies have, however, seen lower falls over the same period - e.g.:

https://www.xe.com/currencycharts/?from=GBP&to=THB&view=1Y

https://www.xe.com/currencycharts/?from=EUR&to=THB&view=1Y

So there does appear to be something going on with the AUD at the moment, which obviously is not good news for Aussie expats.

Usually not so much THB strength, but home country's weakening.

Let's wait until the tariffs against Thailand really start.

First it was july , then august 1st , now august 8th ?

Maybe this can makes some moves in exchange rate.

I believe the strong baht versus Farang currencies is the main reason why Tourism from such countries have declined. It sends flight prices high. It stops families coming and its noticeable that when I taught UK students they really liked Vietnam somewhat more saying friendly vibe. Under Thaksin in the early 2000s we got 55bht to £ and more of us came. And buying houses was better.

Of course Brexit did not help as rest of world understood better than Brexiteers that the £ dropped as it affected our future trade, foreign investment into UK and the long term effects on our economy.

It was Trump’s plans the dollar is worth less than less against this this  money I remember it was 34 to one now it’s nowhere near that TIT

Or devalue to compensate for 36% tariffs. Thailand's procrastination in dealing with anything preemptively has restricted the choice of alternatives - the most expedient choice being devaluation

In which direction are you predicting it moves??

The experts on here have been saying for years that it will weaken and it never has, and sadly for you any many others it's not happening, I have no idea why it stays so strong and neither does anyone else, and I mean anyone.

*waits for an 'expert' to offer an alternative view

Won't happen, nothing moves it, it's pretty much pegged.

Some of us are experiencing the same issues with the US dollar tanking against the Thai baht many of the issues are quite understandable. Trump is destroying the US economy one step at a time. It could be intentional. It could be diabolical. Nobody knows. He could simply be unhinged or following the dictates of a very sinister cabal. But the dollar is weaker against most currencies to the tune of 10% across the board since the beginning of his reckless administration. I don’t think Trump has a coherent value structure as most of us understand it. I think we’re seeing a president who’s operating without anything any of us would recognize as a conscience. Truly.

The US dollar is not tanking? The dollar was at nearly 35 baht in November of 2024. Today? 32.16

The dollar was at near parity to the Euro in January of 2025, just prior to the sabateur engaging his ignorant policies. Now? 1.176 dollars for one Euro.

In addition the entire planet seems to be avoiding US government bonds, and the dollar indexes have all dropped.

That must have been a long time ago. It was 32-33 when I came here. Still have a pile of $100 notes as I stopped cashing them when it went below 30.

One year it was above 24 AUD/THB. This drop is rather dramatic when you are trying to bring money in.

And a couple of years ago it was around 28.5. If you're not prepared to withstand big variations in the dollar/baht ratio you're going to suffer. Sure was nice when it was in the high 34s, though.

"Trump's Tariffs" Are really the "People's" tariffs.  It's what we voted for.  A year out from now you will see the USD gain significantly against these ASEAN currencies.

Weaker THB , and if this Cambodia fight today gets worse , even lower THB.

But I could be wrong of course.

When I came in Dec 2016 it was around 36 THB to USD. Sure was nice when it was 36 to 37 around 15 mths ago.
