Don’t believe everything you read,

From the Joint border commission meeting June 14th,

Despite the constructive progress, the Thai side expressed deep disappointment regarding  Cambodia’s continued refusal to address bilateral disputes in particular over the four areas of Emerald Triangle, Prasat Ta Muen Thom, Prasat Ta Muen Tod, and Prasat Ta Kwai, through the existing JBC mechanism. Instead Cambodia persists in seeking adjudication by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which Thailand views as contrary to the spirit of good neighbourliness.

Why can’t Cambodia try and descale at the lowest level?  Because they like to play the victim.

Yes, first I heard this morning here in Prasat was about 0545. Big Thai guns shooting from only 3 or 4 km away. Windows rattle every 3 or 4 minutes. They sound closer than last night.

Fortunately we don't seem to be targetted by the Cambodians, but the sound of the Thai guns is more than enough for me.

2 adults of our 12-odd family & near-family members (some quite odd but all well behaved) have been caffeined. The rest to eat soon once the extra large rice cooker we bought yesterday gets to work.

Wonder what the comparable drone capabilities are?

You can't believe anything you read unless it's parroted by both sides.

The Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) requires agreement on both sides, agreement can't be reached.  So what do countries do in any dispute where you can't reach agreement? They either go to independent arbitration (International Court of Justice, ICJ), or they fight.

Both sides have motives for fighting, the only de-escalation I am seeing is Cambodia offering mediation by the ICJ.  If the JBC was fit for purpose there wouldn't be any disputes after the first meeting.

We don't know who started this, we don't know who planted the mines, don't believe anything you read.

Indeed much louder and constant.

I thought that the IC adjudicated this sometime this century. Thailand never contested the ruling anywhere near the time limit and then had some lousy excuse when they said, "but, but, but" years later.

Somebody earlier covered the historical information, and it seems that Thailand did not object for over a hundred years.  Hence the ICJ ruling.

It's not that agreement can't be reached. It's that Cambodia chooses to ignore the agreement and do an end-run to another party.

Thailand, since approximately 1960, I believe, states that it does not accept ICJ jurisdiction, a view that many countries have adopted. If they accept it now, then they are changing their long-held position.

There are many border areas under dispute, not just this one, BTW.

If the real problem were the temples, it would be so easy to solve, just make a kind of DMZ around the temples so both sides can visit. But no, leaders feel powerful when there's an external conflict, specially on the Cambodian side that is a full blown dictatorship, has been so for decades. The conflict brings national unity.

If agreement could be reached, there wouldn't be any fighting.

If agreement could be reached, Cambodia wouldn't suggest an end-run to another party.

Can't go anywhere yet as the farm needs tending too. Will make our way to Surin to see the grand-folks, let them know everything is OK. A quick supply run before heading back.

Hopefully, today, the powers that be will talk constructively (doubt it) and put a quick end to this.

that is quite an escalation..................what next ?

At the moment it's just a border skirmish, when bombs hit Bangkok or Phnom Pehn it's time to worry.

Wars at 2 borders now.....what's next

3 borders - Burma spilling into Thailand , Malaysia because of Muslim issues and Cambodia with silly drawn border line that doesn't respect either sides wishes.

I think that surmises it pretty well...

I never thought I would ever be giving my family instructions on how to react if rockets, mortars, or artillary rounds were incoming.

Fricking wars.       I hate 'em!

I experienced hundreds of mortar & rocket attacks over 50 years ago.   Damned anxiety about incoming popped up again.  Even if I am in Bangkok.

I haven't read their comments so don't know what they have posted but I wonder how many have actually been in a shooting war?

Same boat myself. No PTSD but plenty of calculations of probability going on in my head.

F16 are not that old and they are still in use with USAF but upgraded. Did Thailand get theirs upgraded as well? Don't know.

Thailand has electronic warfare systems in their air force, navy, and army, including advanced fighter jets with electronic warfare suites and ground-based systems.
A good EW system should be able to highly decrease the effectiveness of SAM systems

Targeting civilians is an unforgivable act! Cambodia should be condemned!

F16 is still in production by LM, a lot of variants since the first GD in ‘74 all of which are better than the F104 and F86 flying bricks. The US distributes specific configurations to different countries, the a & b configurations for th and specific configurations within those.

𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝟏 𝐨𝐟 𝐰𝐚𝐫. This is what it looks like.

Homes destroyed.

𝟏𝟒 𝐜𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐝.

No school. No work. No safety.

Children running. Mothers crying. Grandparents sleeping on mats.

Over 50,000 people evacuated from Thai villages.

Our focus now is the kids and the elderly. They need:

Diapers, baby milk, soap, shampoo, toothbrushes

Elder care items

Ready-to-eat meals — think MAMA noodles

This is the reality when you live paycheck to paycheck and war comes to your front door.

𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐤𝐨𝐤 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐇𝐞𝐥𝐩 𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 is collecting urgently and plans to send a relief truck to the affected area by Sunday.

Drop-off location:

Soi 23/2, Sukhumvit Rd Soi 10

Or donate:

Bangkok Bank: 105-5-06287-9

Please note:

We are not collecting clothes at this time for the displaced people.

Blankets are very welcome.

No vegetables or meat — they are heavy and spoil easily.

Best items right now:

Blankets

Diapers, powdered milk

Toothbrushes, soap, shampoo

MREs, Mama noodles, dry ready-to-eat packs

Elderly hygiene supplies

For me it is PTSD.  Veterans Adminisstration in U.S. of A. first rated me at 10% back in 1986, which they kept increasing over the years until they rated me at 100% PTSD, in November 2010, due to my Vietnam experience.

I was in Bangkok a few years ago when there were a few bombings.   That got my anxiety going which continued to affect me for weeks afterwards.

Yes, but Cambodia made no attempt to talk.

Tells you volumes, ran off and told mum.
