Thai Import Duties On Wine

Featured Replies

For those like myslf who are mystified by the price of imported wine in Thailand I came across an article from January 2024 that provides some clarity on import duties, excise and other taxes imposed on imported wines. My rough calculations suggest that the cost of an AUD$10 (210 baht at current exchange rate) bottle of Australian wine after import duties and taxes are applied rises to about 374 baht (AUD $18) in Thailand - note that "import duties" on Australian wine are 0% under the Thailand-Australia Free Trade Agreement TAFTA) so it is excise duties and local taxes that are responsible for the price of Australian wine in Thailand. For those hoping that the Trump trade negotiations will reduce the price of imported American wine you should note that it is already subject to 0% import duties so our only hope for reduced prices is if the negotiations result in a reduction in excise duties. I hold out little hope unfortunately.

Then as mentioned in a previous thread you haven't been looking closely enough or depends on your reference points.

Agreed they are still too high but there have been some definite reductions.

Please give some definite examples.

If the reductions in price are substantial I'll run out and buy.

I wouldn't say "substantial" however here was probably the most recent thread on the same subject -

I specifically mention Hope End wine in Makro and general pricing on Jacobs Creek especially at the lower end.

I'm only familiar with prices of Australian wines but some Jacob's Creek have come down to 445 baht and Wolf Blass from 399 to 369 (but only at Makro). Not substantial reductions and still substantially higher than prices in Australia.

One example is Jacob’s Creek Sauvignon Blanc.

It used to be 599 in BigC and 7/11

It’s now 445 baht in both of those places.

Thanks... I'm on my way.

Trump is seeking to remove all trade barriers not simply tarrifs. Probably half the countries US has trade issues are with nations that put up additional barriers to fair trade. The non tarrif barriers are the most flagrant

Thailand. Germany and much of Europe .

In the end the imbalance adjusts or they have bigger problems.

Agree so the hope is that the excise duties on (at least) US wine imported to Thailand are reduced to zero as I can't envisage any reduction in the 17.5% local tax. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
One of the other, amongst many, categories I'm interested in are vitamins and supplements which as far as I can ascertain are subject to a 35% import duty but I can't find any information about whether they are then subject to excise taxes.

Haven't a clue what the price in Oz would be these days ...

So! The usual  practice of GREED in operation then. What a surprise!

If you do not like the import duty then you should be cheering TRUMP because if he gets teh import dropped on American wine and spirits you can be guaranteed that it will cause all to drop.

About $14 so just under 300 baht at current exchange rate. We are being robbed!

And yet imported vodka in Thailand is cheaper than in Australia. Go figure!

Just up the road from us but I've never persuaded b/f to investigate. I shall now renew my efforts. 😅

Price Comparison: Pre- vs. Post-Tax Changes

(Examples for popular wines in Thai supermarkets like Villa Market, Tops, Wine Connection)

Wine (750ml) Pre-Tax Price (THB) Post-Tax Price (THB) Change
Jacob’s Creek Shiraz 1,200 950–1,000 –20%
Yellow Tail Cabernet 850 700–750 –15%
Casillero del Diablo 1,500 1,200–1,300 –15%
Moët & Chandon Brut 4,500 3,800–4,000 –12%
Thai-produced wine 600–800 500–700 –10%

That is pertinently not true, I myself have been drinking Mont Clair for more than 10 years, whether you like it or not is irrelevant now but some 8 years ago those packs were available in 3, 5, and 10 ltr.
For the 5 ltr packs you paid 995 THB, for the 3 ltr around 600 THb. and for the 10 ltr around 1800 Thb.
Now for the past 4 or 5 years, I have been paying 995 THB for those 3 ltr packs and it has remained the same all these years, until today.

It is also still important to pay attention to the alcohol percentage, Mont Clair is 12%, of the wines where the price has been reduced a bit, almost all are wines with a lower alcohol percentage.
That's my referention points!

Don't buy much variety of Wine here.

Jacob's Creek Shiraz cab was 599 baht and is now 445 in 7-11 that's a 34.5% decrease.

Article I read on Nation Thailand talked about 10,000 items being imported from US at 0% Tariff.  1,000 still have some tariff.  We will have to wait and see once this is finalized as the couriers will need to have this figured out.

Well the post 2 above yours and the one below it would seem to differ.........

Just because Mont Clair hasn't changed doesn't mean others haven't. No one claimed, or I certainly didn't, that it was all wines.

Castle Creek same as Mont Clair. 3 ltr now same price as 5 ltr was. And if we are honest they're not good wine and WAY over priced.
