What Thai cities float your boat?

Udon Thani has a cathedral.

Edit: those were province numbers.

The population of Udon Thani is approximately 400,000.

It's a city in my opinion. There are cities like Porto in Portugal around that population size.

Bit cities are over 1 million.

Wow, Susan! Another amazingly creative new topic from you and this one’s another masterpiece. Bargain basement depth with redundancy as the main course and a dash of dumpster diving. Truly groundbreak

  • So you can't discuss the topic. Always the way with you. Just a troll. Why do people join a Thai forum then never discuss Thailand? So strange. Not so difficult to talk is it?

Thailand does not have the same rule.

Here, a City needs more than 3 Central malls and at least 2 Terminal 21's.

Robinsons malls do not count.

1000 7-11's or 500 Big C's can be traded for one Central ..... it's like houses and hotels in Monopoly.

Criteria for a city in Thailand:

  1. Population: Generally around 50,000 or more.

  2. Administrative Status: Must be designated as a municipality by the government.

  3. Infrastructure: Must have basic urban infrastructure (roads, sanitation, etc.).

  4. Economic Activity: Must have developed commercial, industrial, and service sectors.

  5. Local Government: Must have its own local authority or municipal body overseeing urban management.

Cities in Thailand:

Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Pattaya, Phuket, Khon Kaen, Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat), Udon Thani, Hua Hin, Ayutthaya, Surat Thani, Chiang Rai, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Songkhla.

I like Hua Hin more and more.

If you want massages or bars there are more then enough options.  2 malls with decent food. Big beaches, golf, good restaurants.  Not many undesirable low lifes and criminals like Pattaya. People are generally very friendly.

The worst part of it is going to or coming from Bangkok.  That Rama IV road construction is a nightmare and a dangerous stressful drive.  Other then that, I think HH is pretty good.

Calling Hua Hin a city is laughable

There is only one city here, the rest are towns.

Since 80% of my Tinder responders seem to be from Nonthaburi, I guess I will be giving it a look in soon.

I am resistant to the portion of Nonthaburi that is on the so-called wrong side of the river.

If anyone has any Nonthaburi insights to share, I would be grateful. They definitely have some nice restaurants, particularly by the water.

Dimwitted fantasists who have never been to Nonthaburi, but still have a lot to say about it, are particularly welcome.

Yeah it is fairly good. I just wish it had better restaurants. For me its CM 1, Udon 2, HH 3.

CM floats my boat. Bangkok, Udon and HH just a bit. Most cities are rather same same. Even a Thai lady was telling me there is nothing to do in Nong Khai.

I wondered if you were ill or got caught up in the conflict......no new thread for over an hour!

Answer: Bangkok and Bangkok alone.

AI says on walking

Best Thai Cities to Walk

Bangkok: Offers extensive walking opportunities in its Old Town, where visitors can explore the Grand Palace, Wat Phra Kaew, Wat Pho, and the Chao Phraya River waterfront, alongside bustling markets and historic streets.

Chiang Mai: Known for its laid-back atmosphere and ancient city walls, Chiang Mai is ideal for walking, with over 300 temples like Wat Chedi Luang and Wat Phra That Doi Kham, as well as night markets and the scenic Ping River.

Phuket Old Town: Features charming streets lined with colorful Sino-Portuguese architecture, local cafes, and markets such as Thalang Road, making it a delightful area for cultural walks.

Krabi Town: Provides peaceful strolls along the Pak Nam River, local markets, and access to nearby natural attractions, offering a more authentic glimpse into daily Thai life.

Chanthaburi: Home to Chanthaboon Old Town with its wooden houses, gem markets, and riverside walks, this city combines history and local culture in a walkable setting.

Nong Khai: Located on the Mekong River, it features walkable attractions like Sala Kaew Ku park with its sculptures, riverside views, and the Skywalk at Wat Pha Tak Suea offering panoramic vistas.

Sukhothai: The Sukhothai Historical Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is designed for walking among restored temples and ruins that reflect the birth of Thai civilization.

I would say if you like to meet up with some similar minded buddies, down a few alcoholic beverages, reminisce about previous Special Forces adventures, put the worlds problems to right, flirt with the bar girls, people watch ( and criticise ) the old expats with the younger Thai ladies in tow to give marks out of 10 regarding their choice of company for the evening then Pattaya is the place to be.

If you are a family man with a couple of lead weights in tow who long since retired from the bar scene and prefers a sedate lifestyle with the odd hobby or two to break the monotony then any Thai city or even village will suffice. There’s not much difference from them ( barring BKK, HH, CM and Patts of course ).

Up here in Udon Thani, I meet up with some similar minded buddies, down a few alcoholic beverages, reminisce about previous adventures and try to put the world's problems to right. Some of us still flirt with the bar girls, but we all still people watch (and criticise) the younger expats with their trophy Thai ladies in tow, and give marks out of 10 regarding the chance of it all ending in tears.

Special Forces? Meh...

It was 3 PARA.

Much to do in Nong Khai.  Great city and some of the best weather in Thailand.  Someone else could state the opposite.  A better question would be - what do you want in a city?  Not all cities are the same and some aren't even remotely similar.

I love where I'm at and is similar to Nong Khai but more hills and mountains.  Also more rugged scenery but that works for me.  I like more open space and the rocks open up the jungle.  Great scenery, nice restaurants, and a group of individuals that I can share experiences with  is a good city for ME.  I have two out of the three where I'm at and will probably never have a group to share experiences here.  My fault having never put in the effort to improve my Thai and not sure where that would get me anyhow.

Some of your threads aren't bad and wonder about all the hate. I could care less that Trump gives you a boner.

Nong Khai is ok. I told the Thai you need to enjoy walking. Udon is better imo. Khon Kaen is ok too. I like CM cause the Old City is ideal for walking. So much within a few km.

Nongkhai has that market which seems to be mainly tourist tat , then there`s quite a nice walk along the river side . Apart from that , what is there ? It seemed quite quiet when I was there .

Lived in CM for a total of 12 years.  Loved outside the city but the inner city is one of the most poluted cities in the world.  At the ned before moving I refused to go into the city with friends because of the polution.

Apparently, the governing criteria that allows any place to call itself a city in the UK, is having a cathedral.

That requirement was removed in 1889.

I lived in Chiang Mai for years. I eventually came to the conclusion that it was "god's waiting room". I never 100% fit in, but always felt I was waiting for something...

The last time I left I could not see the mountain from my window due to the smoke. I think breathing it for months took some time off my life...

Meeting women there was somewhat difficult for me. Not sure why, but they seemed uninterested for the most part...

That said, it is a great place to lie low and get some work done if you are a digital nomad (not too many distractions and you can cocoon in a digital nomad community and do your thing)...

Some of my best times there were in fact being with other nomads and expats and avoiding Thai's and Thailand altogether. Something about that limited scene enabled me to think, work and succeed vs being distracted...

Not so much cities, but towns I like:

Saladan Town Lanta. The seafood restaurants on the water with the pier you are on creaking and moving as you eat.

Khao Lak. Last I was there, there was really only one pub for nightlife, always had a good band, can't remember the name. Great beaches

Krabi Town. Sunset dinner on the river, lots of other really inexpensive eateries in town.

Pattaya ticks all my boxes.

That’s good for you, but near impossible to find a girlfriend with a respectable job! 😎

Aside from home, where ever I am, and any given moment.   Actually the journey is usually better than the city (usually avoid) I'm close to.   Usually don't stay in cities.

Surfside, riverside, lakeside, hillside works for us.

Ah...before anyone here was born. That's how I missed it.

Got a citation for that?

Why would I want a GF with a respectable job?

Agree with Central, T21 etc for in-person, but for many these days they prefer dating sites. Good luck finding a nice Pattaya TGF with a respectable job on there 🙃

Maybe they need to try a bit harder, move in different circles? Maybe learn the language?

Are you suggesting that you/people go there to meet girls who have a disrespectable job?
