  • Did a TAT staistician add the numbers?

  • It may sound unbelievable, but considering the situation, it might be worth it if Cambodia can advance into Thai territory before the ceasefire negotiations come to an end.

  • 2500 Dead.....Is this a joke or what? I might believe 25 dead maybe.... And I doubt even 25......They are determined to turn a big nothing into a big some thing one way or another....

So many killed over a small piece of land with a ruin on it.

A terrible shame

@scude102 another reminder of rule 16. English is the only permitted language anywhere on ASEAN NOW, except within the Thai language  forum, where using Thai is allowed. Short Thai translations of technical terms are permitted in specialty  forums. While we make allowances for members who do not speak English as their first language, we expect everyone to make an effort to post in a manner that allows others to understand their posts. As an international  forum we have members from many countries in the world, and English is not the first language of every poster.

Send three and four pence we are going to a dance.

The Thai army reports that about 2,500 Cambodian soldiers have died in ongoing border clashes as they attempt to reclaim the Prasat Ta Khwai area in Panom Dongrak district, Surin, and the Pumakhua area in Kantharalak district, Sisaket. Maj. Gen. Wanchana Sawatdee shared this estimate during an interview for "Naewna Online." He noted reports from four different sources, but concerns about accuracy persist, with estimates ranging from 700 to 6,000.

Cambodian forces have mainly suffered casualties in rear support divisions due to Thai airstrikes, rather than in direct frontline engagement. Thai troops have regained control over disputed territories by adhering to established boundaries, while Cambodian forces have retreated. The conflict reignited when both sides overstepped their previously agreed boundary lines.

The current focus is on two critical points, with Cambodia holding a geographical advantage in Prasat Ta Kwai, particularly at Hill 350. Bombarding these strategic locations is risky due to the potential for retaliation using long-range weapons. Cambodian military efforts are concentrated on reinforcing troops at both Pumakhua and Ta Kwai as they strive to regain lost ground.

Past border disputes between both countries have frequently sparked tensions and military confrontations. The strategic importance of the territories in question plays a significant role in the continued hostilities. The Thai army is determined to maintain its reclaimed positions, focusing on a map scale of 1:50,000 to ensure accuracy in territorial claims.

Meanwhile, the evolving situation on the ground puts diplomatic efforts in jeopardy. The ongoing redeployment of Cambodian troops suggests a prolonged conflict, as neither side shows signs of backing down. The current developments emphasise the need for sustainable peace talks to prevent further loss of life and restore stability in the region, according to Thai Newsroom.

In conclusion, the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia over these territories remains intense, with significant casualties reported on the Cambodian side. ThThe military situation is continuously evolving, which highlights the complexities involved in establishing long-term peace amidst longstanding territorial disputes.

Confusion reigns as reports flood in regarding the true death toll of a recent tragedy. Sources wildly differ in their accounts, with initial reports claiming at least 700 fatalities.

Yet, the clarity ends there.

A second source suggests a death toll between 1,000-2,000. Closer investigation reveals even greater variance, as another source insists 2,700 have perished. The chaos peaks with a fourth report suggesting the staggering number could reach 6,000.

Glad you find death and destruction amusing.

I have family who were evacuated from Sangkha. This is real and involves real people and warriors not of the keyboard genre.

i agree, often wondered how 3000 Cambodians died but none injured and then they expect the international press to publish it  !!!

If a border has been agreed in the past by both countries, shouldn't it be registered with a neutral party and referred to in negotiations? Hard to believe either side in a conflict, but a border ratified with the UN, for instance, would mean no one can claim land willy nilly.

I just cannot imagine how e.g. Germany could encroach into French land without being internationally ostracized.

Yes, there is a different agenda going on that's for sure - trying to stretch this out as long as they can. Anything more than 150 combatants (or fewer) on the Cambodian side and 20-30 on the Thai side sounds more like it. First casualty of war is truth.

The first thing I got to learn when I first hit Thailand 25 years ago was that Thais never let the truth get in the way of a good story. Thailand the hub of unsubstantiated gossip.

I must admit that was my reaction. I’m also amazed at the seeming pitched battles being fought with the intent to gain ground for tactical advantage. Desultory exchange of artillery, some air strikes by Thailand, I thought that was about it.

These are supposedly dead logistical personnel, some way behind the border - the result of air strikes on depth rear area positions.

Makes it harder to prove the Thai army wrong if the claimed deaths are in Cambodian held territory

I wouldn't trust the Thai army with anything, not even with counting dead bodies. I wouldn't be surprised if the actual figure was closer to 250.

Still, what a senseless waste of lives on both sides.

I wonder if we'll ever find out why this happened (was it a deliberate ploy to create a dramatic incident for a completely different reason) and who shot first. We'll probably never know. Just like the fire in Central World and the photos of the multi-floor hanging cement and rebars that were clearly caused by an explosion, not molitov cocktails thrown at it by red shirts - we'll never be told the truth.

Yes, it should normally just be dying down by now, and a lot of the claims are complete nonsense. You can see by the Thai media's daily non-stop repeating of propaganda they are fed that there must be another reason to keep this thing alive. But maybe same is going in in Cambodia - who knows.

2500 dead?

Then one can assume another 7500 wounded.

Hospitals throughout the country would be overflowing. 2500 families mourning their dead; you would have thought that someone would have noticed?

Frankly I doubt that Cambodia has that many rear area logistical troops!

Same could be said of Covid, all those deaths and living between 2 temples I never witnessed an upsurge in funerals.

In my view, this announcement does as much good for Thailands' PR effort as Harrys' claims, as to how many fuzzy-wuzzies he killed in Afghanistan,  did for him!

Some people should learn when to keep their mouths shut.

My take is that this is a simple and obvious example of exaggeration.  Information warfare as part of a Psy Ops campaign, spreading disinformation and false propaganda to influence attitudes and behaviour of the populace on both sides, targeting the poorly educated, to sap the enemy population’s will to fight while generating and maintaining domestic national support.

I did not realize that Bagdad Bob had gone to work as a Thai military spokesman.

I suggest to demonstrate Thailand's superiority as well as distraction and diversion from current political shenanigans and, perhaps, lay the path for military invention in domestic politics ...
