Yes. Yeast extract = glutamate = monosodium glutamate = MSG.

More questions??

I think that you need more questions...............or at least better answers.

No, yeast extract is not the same as MSG (monosodium glutamate). While both can be used as flavor enhancers, yeast extract is a natural food ingredient, while MSG is a food additive. Yeast extract contains naturally occurring glutamates, but also includes other compounds like proteins and amino acids. MSG, on the other hand, is a concentrated form of glutamic acid and is 100% sodium glutamate.

I never shop at expat shops. They are overpriced.

Big C's advantage is that it stocks products from the former majority owners, Casino. Never understood why sister company Tops is seemingly more expensive than Big C.

i saw the Thais doing it so tried it

There are many different types of nahm prik and most use the shrimp paste (kapi) as a base.  Palm sugar is often used to cut the extreme saltiness of the kapi.

People still buy pickles ?   They're easier to make than your own bread :coffee1:

To give you the illusion of choice, while monopolizing the food market.

I very occasionally buy Stilton ( and other English Cheeses) from "Tops".

They often have a reasonable variety, and whilst expensive it is certainly not that expensive!

Marmite is expensive I will grant you.

Of course if you want a cheaper (and markedly less palatable) alternative Vegemite is usually available in both Big C and Tops.

There, that will have set the cat amongst the pigeons with our antipodean members!

That brings back good memories of Stilton on a digestive biscuit accompanied by a glass of Ruby/LBV or Vintage Port................Ah, ectasy!

Get a whole cheese with a couple of friends, make a hole in the middle and put a bottle of port upside down in the cheese. Let it sink in for 24 hours.

Yes, so the Brit Co ripped off a German scientist's product. When the Marmite Food Extract Company started using the byproduct of a local brewery alas they found that the yeast from the UK was not of good enough quality to make a palatable product, contrary to the yeast on the continent. But they managed to make a half-way eatable product after much experimentation.

Still, if you eat Marmite, you're eating a German invention.

So not just two World Wars and one World Cup  but Marmite as well!

Good oh!

Not "sister "company as you put it , 2 different owners Big C is owned by the guy that makes Chang,

Tops is owned by folks who own Central

Here is what the actual manufacturer, Unilever Food Solutions, says in black and white.

Scroll down to the ingredients, where it says, NO MSG is added, then come back and apologize..... 🤥

That's UK marmite, In Thailand it's usually NZ marmite which is different.

Nonsense.

Yeast extract is yeast extract = glutamate = MSG

Different yeast, different taste, different sugar levels (NZ =10x UK), different salt (UK has much more).

Different consistency, UK far more runny.

Are you really do ****

or you playing a role?

If you use yeast it doesn't matter where the yeast is coming from

If you get the extract.

All posts about MSG off topic.

Removed along with the troll that started the argument.

Fair enough. However, there is a declared interest. Please refer to the The Central Group website. The companies are grouped under the section that  includes Big C and Tops,  along with their variations under "Partners".  Scroll down to section Central retail Ecosystem   https://www.centralretail.com/en/investor-relations/understanding-central-retail

Never had it.....remember getting malt extract shoved down my throat by my mother every morning.

Malt and Cod Liver Oil, a huge jar of it in the kitchen and a tablespoonful before bed!  Consistency somewhat treacle like. Didn't taste too bad, but of course my brat sister made a fuss. Some attempt by parents to ensure kids got all the vitamins and such as they grew up as they recalled deprived times.

On...maybe mine had cod liver oil in it as well?

Treacle like consistency, looked a bit like petroleum jelly.

Well I can only say this stuff was hard to get onto the spoon and transport to mouth without getting it strung across a counter top. I preferred Ovaltine!

what is marmite made of?

does it contain any nutrients?

Marmite is tasty and made with yeast extract and way too much salt.

It contains very useful amounts of B vitamins.

Prices for the stuff went up in the UK a few years back so there are plenty of other, less costly ways to get your B vitamins.
