Hospital checking visa

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

Last week, the hospital checked my visa. Twice. Not my passport, my visa stamp.

(I think I have heard of this before,  but I was still gobsmacked).

So now the banks , BTS, DLT, hospitals... when will 7/11 check my visa validity every time I buy a coke?

  • Quite understandable, as if you are an overstay, I'd be asking for payment in advance.  If you're the type of person that would overstay, you'd be the type of person that would stick them with a bill.

  • And when you asked why - which you surely did, right? - what did they say?

Don't some types of visa extension required health insurance?   Maybe checking for that?

Yes, Thai hospitals and medical facilities can check visas, particularly when a patient is seeking treatment under a Medical Treatment (MT) visa. The MT visa is specifically designed for individuals entering Thailand for medical treatment and requires proof of this purpose, including a visa. Hospitals may verify the visa to ensure compliance with immigration regulations and the terms of the MT visa.

Good on them and any vendor that asked to see your visa, within reason.   Spot checks are how criminals get caught.   You think PoPo pulled you over because you didn't have your turning signal on ... NO ... looking for criminals and you gave them probable cause.  If you're not an Ahole, you get a warning and on your way.

Hoping to see a lot more, as obviously, too many criminals & riff raff in country, proven by all the headliners on AN  :coffee1:

If it bothers you and it's a private hospital, just say you don't have your passport, they'll still admit you.

Sure about that.

Earlier this year a friend from Oz was visiting Thailand.

Had full travel insurance.

Plus his pasport.

Anyway had a minor turn. Off to hospital (Pattaya).

Private.

I had  to provide a 100k "security" to get him admitted.

Edit: obviously he was visa exempt stamp.

Just asking, I may have missed something..........what is the relevance of the visa exempt stamp?

Because the OP mentioned "visa stamp" Twice in first sentence.

At a guess he may have a "Non Re" Stamp in his pp.

My friend was on visa exempt entry.

In any event I don't understand the OP,s concern.

The last time I was at the hospital to collect my tablets every 2 months after I have seen the Doc, I then went to make my next appointment, then I went to pay, then I collect my medicine after I have paid, she asked me for my passport and that is he first time ever, I have never had to show it before, I am already registered which I did some years ago and they gave me, like a membership card that was all I needed to show, I said to her I dont have it, only my driving license which she said it was ok, I just think it's a bad habit Thais have, asking for your passport,  It used to piss me of in the bank asking for my passport everytime I went in.

"Immigration must do"

(It's one of the leading international hospitals,  the English is a bit limited)

Nice idea - no, I don't have a MT visa.

Just your run-of-the-mill retirement extension.

They asked the day after having admitted me. They were satisfied with a picture of my visa stamp in my phone.

And the next day they asked again. Buggered off when I told them your staff checked this yesterday.

So what's the concern.

If immigration has directed hospitals, banks etc to check visa stamp you would/should have zero concerns.

Could be as simple as checking valid permission of stay.

I assume they think Immigration is incompetent & bribable.🤣

Banks always check account holders' ID including visa.

In order to find out if you have a valid stay permit  here.

Nothing new though.

No immediate concern (except that until recently I never carried my permission-of-stay stamp,  just picture page and visa page).

I was wondering whether this is routine?  Anybody else had this experience?

Not a nice feeling, to be treated like a potential criminal at every occasion (see @KhunLA and @ChipButty)

Hells Bells, is it that difficult to provide your actual passport.

Seem to be making simple into difficult.

Guess a court order is required by hotel to get your passport if/when you check into one.

I don't mind a minor 'invasion of privacy', especially for info they could easily access otherwise, if wanting.   If it exposes a criminal or riff raff, then all the better.

Better for my to provide freely, rather then them paying an employee to call & check with Imm, as less overheard, and hopefully trickles down to less expensive healthcare.

Thais and immigrants, are also asked for the IDs, so not seeing the difference.  Everyone has to prove they are legally here at the hospital, whether govt or private.

Yes, it is.

The whole idea of keeping passport pictures in your phone is you can keep your passport in a secure location - but then it may not easily be accessible in an emergency.

I have no issues with Thailand checking my credentials .

Late last year at a large private hospital in Bangkok, I was asked for my passport, and they certainly checked the visa I had. The thing is, I have been going to this same hospital for over twenty years...

It's getting like banks, where you can have an account for years and years and they still want to see your passport over and over. I nearly had my account frozen because they had no record of one of my passports that expired twelve years ago. It didn't seem to matter that they had my last two passports on file. Twenty minutes of discussion before finally agreeing they didn't need to see it 🤯

I took my cat to a vet for his ear mites and they required me to show my passport to get him treatment. It was ridiculous, but I agree it seems like a bad habit that many Thais have.

Out of curiosity, are hospitals required to file a TM30 on you if they keep you overnight?

And if they do, are they required to check for a visa and/or and entry stamp?
