Too expensive?  Don't order it.

Overall too expensive of an establishment?  KEEP AWAY!

Simple as that .

Maybe the investigators want to steal his recipes.

She wasn't showing the charged price on the menu so they didn't get what they ordered. How can so many keep misreading this story.

...sitting in the heat, paying 4,000 baht, with a city bus belching black diesel smoke onto my omelet...

Social media "influencer" feigns outrage for clicks?

Raan Jay Fai Bangkok

Dr. Pattarapha Chadit, who had joined Peachii at the table, later explained the situation. She revealed that the 4,000-baht omelette included the highest grade crab meat and is usually reserved for “VVIP” guests. As a regular, Pattarapha often receives this premium version, and Jay Fai, seeing her, assumed she wanted it again.

“This was a special order for someone familiar,” Pattarapha said, adding she did not mention this detail to Peachii before they ordered. She accepted responsibility for not explaining this to her friends, which caused the problem. Pattarapha insisted Chef Fai meant no harm. She simply wanted to offer her best to a loyal customer, using better crab without raising the subject.

A Michelin-starred chef in Bangkok is facing criticism for charging a hefty 4,000 baht for a crabmeat omelette. The Department of Internal Trade is investigating whether this jaw-dropping price violates pricing regulations, which could mean serious legal trouble.

Director-General Wittayakorn Maneenetr revealed that the famous Jay Fai restaurant has been fined for failing to include the omelette's price on its menus. A sharp-eyed YouTuber initiated this investigation by highlighting a discrepancy in the menu that displayed only a price of 1,500 baht. The restaurant owner already coughed up a 2,000 baht fine when officials made a surprise visit.

However, this could be just the beginning of troubles for Jay Fai. Officials are now scrutinising the cost of ingredients to determine if the restaurant has been overcharging its customers. According to Mr Wittayakorn, overcharging can result in a jail term of up to seven years and a fine of up to 140,000 baht.

The restaurant has been ordered to break down the costs to ensure the prices match the dish's actual value, reported the Bangkok Post.

Jay Fai, managed by 82-year-old Supinya “Jay Fai” Junsuta, is a culinary gem in Bangkok, securing its first Michelin star in 2017 and maintaining it since.

The outcome of this investigation could have lasting consequences for the renowned establishment, known for its exquisite and pricey offerings.

LOL! But Thailand is screaming for high spending tourists!! How can they spend "high" if they do not over-charge for the food??? The cost of raw materials are cheap, so the only way to make someone "over pay" is to OVER CHARGE!!!! 🤣🤣🤣

What about the other restaurants in tourist venues like Phuket, Hua Hin or Bangkok where they are cheating (usually the foreign customers mainly)  with highly inflated prices with much smaller portions in the plate or lower quality food ?

I would not enter this place to use their toilet let alone eat the food.

Many restaurants serve fresh seafood at a set price, but can also state based on market price which fluctuates. And within a range. Sometimes greatly.

Pseudo mock-Crab meat is made to resemble crab and taste in the ballpark, often as “Crab-sticks”, but for a fraction of the cost, this is what is common in most budget priced “crab” dishes.

But actual imported King Crab or Snow Crab, etc, flown in live and fresh from Alaska and elsewhere, will be far, far above in cost. Local crab will be much less, but just not taste the same.

So before freaking out about a 4,000 baht / $122 crab meal, you must ask;

is this local crab, which is ok,

or Alaskan or other premium imported specialty crab,  price based on market value?

A Michelin starred restaurant could be expected to source the best ingredients available regardless of cost, because their customers expect something special, usually at a premium price, specialty dishes that can’t be found typically. Typically based on “market cost” that morning.

Putting a fixed price on a menus means they can only buy produce that fits in budget, not best available at market. Often there is a huge difference in taste.

This witch-hunt is obviously set in motion by someone with no clue about how high end restaurants work, nor about market pricing of specialty foods…

or by a disgruntled competitor that got hosed for customers last month...

Welcome to "content creators"  this was a you tuber. Probably tried yo get a free meal.

Michelin Starred restaurant? If accurate that's ehat you're paying for.

Jail for overcharging? Then every Thai merchant who charges foreigners more than Thais should go to jail as well, lol

With or without receipt?

This greedy  Jay Fai took advantage of so many clients through her Michelin accolade for so many years. Now it's time to pay back. Karma!

I too can make my own omelette. But even if I knew how to make a crab omelette, I doubt I could make one anywhere close to as good as this old fellow does. He has been doing it for years and earned a Michelin Star because it is considered so good.

I would expect to pay a premium for it because of supply and demand, but no way THB 4,000. Not even THB 2,000

It seems his fame has gone to his head. I will stick to my normal ham and cheese.

There is no way an 82 year old is ever being sent to jail because of the pricing in her restaurant - the headline itself is such a stretch.

What of the markup on Wine in may other restaurants, often more than 2-3x the cost, but in some cases far more than that - so are those owners susceptible to investigation ?

Next time I'm charged 4000 baht for a 1000 baht bottle of wine, or even 1500 baht for a 500 baht bottle of wine, should we create a social media scene ?

Yes 🤷🏼

Part of a restaurant's price is for where you sit and their service – it's not the same as making your own omelette from two eggs and a bit of oil or butter, not to forget quality crab meat.

Jay Fai is famous, so part of her (over)priced street-food is because of her name – just like any expensive brand name – and part is that you sit in a place with a Michelin Star. Her fault was, that she didn't publish the price increase caused by more expensive and/or higher quality crab meat.

When you dine at a 5-star resort – and yes, here a 690 baht bottle of "cheap" wine will typically also cost you around 2,000 baht or more, as @richard_smith237 mentioned – you pay for where you sit, the view, and the privacy with distance to neighbouring guests. Price is also used to separate customers, so low society don't mingle with hi-society. Try to order a cheese burger in a Four Seasons' coffee shop, you might be surprised of the price when getting the bill to sign with your room-number; it might almost make Fay Jai's crab omelette-price look modest...:whistling:

However, I might prefer a seafood-BBQ dinner for 3,690 baht per person in a 5-star resort – price includes special seating, view and privacy, not to forget private chef and waiter – even that the price it's exclusive of 7% vat and 10% service. The extra 400 baht might be worth spending to fully enjoy one's dinner, compared to sit in a street food place....

I presume both Jay Fai and the seafood-BBQ here, normally is a once-in-life experience – if you can choose one only, which one would you take..?

It's not about the price as such, it's about what's on the menu/price list and what you get finally charged.

If the pic in the OP shows the omelet in question, then I must say that's a rediculous amount of crab meat or whatever it is.

You must really be into crab to devour this imo.

A woman called Pattarapha is a repeat customer who regularly orders the 'special dish' with the higher end crab meat (reported as the VVIP Omelette dish) at 4000 baht...

This was not explained to 'Peachii and her friend Martha who accompanied Pattarapha to Jai Fai - 'Peachii' an 'apparent' influencer, then turned to social media to complain without any inquiry...

All of this 'storm in a teacup' is about a person crying-out for 'internet fame'...

The practice off the VVIP Omelette is certainly odd, nevertheless, its not something the 'repeat customer' Pattarapha had issue with in the past, only the 'guests' accompanying her took issue.

True,I can’t imagine a worse way to enjoy a good meal.
As for people quoting Michelin Star, it’s Michelin Star Street Food . Theres a huge difference in those two words. For it to be fair, I think street food should be what it is.  Not 4000baht omelette with crab.
While I believe that any restaurant can charge what ever price they like , it has to be justifiable, and correctly printed on the menu. No way I’d eat in a place like that at that price. I like my comfort.

Restauraants should be allowed to charge whatever they want for a meal entree but the price should be clearly marked on the menu.  In this case, it apparently wasn't or was incorrect.  Customers are free to vote with their feet as to whether they want to eat at any restaurant.

Obviously, many things must figure into the pricing of a restaurant entree, including food cost, food spoilage, building rent, advertising, furniture, dishwares, utensils, kitchen equipment, linens, breakage, insurance, employee wages, utilities, profit, etc.   It's not an easy business and for many restaurants there's a low profit margin.

No.
Actually have been in the business in the past. And eaten at a dozen or more Michelin 1-3 starred places on 3 continents.

This is how the high end gourmet restaurant business works on all continents .  And I am anything but an YouTuber influencer scrounging for deals. What a joke!
