Canada Surrenders

Though a lot of MAGA devotees would never admit the truth, the reality is quite the opposite. Carney has been striking deals with nations all over the world and setting itself up for substantially less dependence on the US, while the US is losing access to the highest quality lumber on the planet, very convenient oil and natural gas, and a wealth of precious metals and rare earth materials.

Remind us again when you're gonna leave the little "temples" in Cambodia and head back to the US to help pick oranges? Your country needs you, buddy. Don't tell us you'll do as yellow-belly Trump did when his country called on him to do his duty. Surely you're not a chickens**t traitor, right?

Perhaps Canadians know that tariffs are a tax imposed on the buyer of foreign goods and the Canadian government decided not to punish its citizens.

On the other hand, Trump seems to continue peddling the nonsense that somehow foreigners are paying the tariffs and the MAGA types are stupid enough to believe him.

This isn't Canada caving, it's the Canadian people winning, unlike ordinary Americans who only lose by having this very regressive tariff tax imposed on them so that the very wealthy can enjoy tax breaks.

yes yes well all have that list, however, one thing I do know is you are sad and pathetic with your Trump derangement.

You just don't get it, do you? Nations all over the globe are combining to reroute supply chains, and do new trade deals which isolate America.

Example: China cancelled all orders of soybeans and corn from the USA. It now buys soybeans from Brazil, and corn from Canada.

The derangement is all yours, if you labor under the delusion tariffs are going to save America from decline.

Winning is everything

Canada removed tariffs only on the same goods which were not taxed by Trump! So now tariffs are reciprocal!

Quotes from the OP article:

"Carney said the rollback, starting September 1, will match US exemptions on goods covered under the United States-Mexico-Canada trade deal (USMCA).

The carve-out mirrors the US approach under the 2020 pact, which shields the majority of goods from punishing duties.

....However, Canada’s 25 percent tariffs on US autos, steel, and aluminum will remain in place for now....."

Canada did not 'surrender' - this is just them matching a move that the US had made earlier. So if what Canada is doing here is surrendering, then the US surrendered first.

The characterization of this by the New York Post is at odds with what actually happened.

As mentioned in the article below:

Quote

... the United States decided earlier this month to maintain its tariff exemption on all goods compliant with the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

Effective September 1, Canada will match that exemption as a goodwill gesture

https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2025/08/22/canada-carney-lifts-retaliatory-tariffs/

Canada drops some retaliatory tariffs in bid to restart trade talks

Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada will lift its tariffs on U.S. goods that comply with a free trade pact but keep tariffs on U.S. steel, aluminum and autos.

BTW, so far Trump the loser's tariffs until now are on average only 7%, because of his love for TACO's, a far cry from the 20-30-50% he claims, and that is also the reason why inflation hasn't gone through the roof yet, but is rising every day.

It's just waiting for the full effect in a few months, when his cult will revolt.

So tough guy election Carney became wet pussycat Carney. Okay.

He promised to inflict "maximum pain" on the US. He tried but it was like a mosquito the US didn't even notice. So he changed his approach.

Well, I guess Canadians lack backbone.

As someone who currently lives in Toronto,  I will be the first to say that I dislike Turdeau with passion and all the garbage policies he brought to this country. I actually love watching the once arrogant torontonians whine and complain about the food prices. But I'll tell you this. I am extremely disappointed in trump that he chose Canada... a weak azz country to blow his load on while he seems like he can't stand to Poutine.

He showed that he is a pretty weak leader in front of Poutine and I am actually worried that America may really become a joke on the world stage. And this is concerning because Canada always relied on USA for like everything.

That being said a lot of Yanks underestimate Mark Carnage even tho he's that WEF guy. That guy is a snake and very smart probably making a ton of deals behind trumps back.

Yagoda, you are clearly in need of therapy, for you seem to prefer supporting stupidity, immorality and irresponsibility over common sense. If Canada chooses to show restraint over the tariffs to our American neighbors, it's not done out of fear as your comments seem to suggest, but rather in hopes of bringing America back to the table. You might be unaware that Canada, the US and Mexico signed a binding trade agreement during Trump's first attempt at the Presidency, but the US has NOT honoured a deal they brokered themselves. So, cut out the gloating over Canada's attempts at sanity, for they can turn off the power to over 5 million US households with the flick of a switch if they choose to do so. More importantly, get some help, for you obviously need it.

Still waiting for Faux News to tell their moron viewers that if Canada were to become the 51st state it would be deep deep blue, with a voting population the size of California.  That's probably another 52 congressional seats that will almost all swing Democrat.  Not that Canada will ever become a 51st state, but this would be a great way for Dems to troll the right and watch their heads explode when this simple math is pointed out to them.

And no, it would not be a territory like Guam or whatever.  According to the convicted felon rotting pumpkin idol himself, it would be a full fledged state.

Which is why Carney caved in, exactly like I and other based forum users said would happen. Getting basic fact through liberal skulls is not an enjoyable task.

Recall that one half of President Biden’s economic program was a targeted plan to greatly boost the manufacturing sector in advanced technology and critical industries. The Inflation Reduction Act, the CHIPS Act, and the bipartisan infrastructure law set up an immense subsidy scheme for both production and purchase of high-tech goods like solar panels, wind turbines, EVs, batteries, and semiconductors

Moreover, the way Trump is doing tariffs is utterly at odds with the needs of manufacturers. Biden’s program did include some tariffs, some of which he borrowed from Trump’s first term, but they were set up in a rational and predictable manner aligned with clear goals and paired with investments in domestic industry.

Chinese EVs, for instance, got a huge and increasing duty because Biden wanted to protect U.S. automakers from their arguably unfair competition. That gave Ford and GM the confidence that they could invest in EV facilities (and take advantage of IRA tax credits) without the rug being yanked out from under them.

Trump’s tariffs, by contrast, are being imposed in a wildly erratic manner, dialed up and down on a practically daily basis via posts on Truth Social. They also don’t have any clear economic goal. Why steel and aluminum? What quantity of these items is Trump aiming to produce? Why champagne, which cannot be produced in the U.S.? He doesn’t say, because he doesn’t know anything.

Most American manufactured goods are sold to Americans, and if there is a recession, purchases will fall. That is doubly true for expensive, durable items where a purchase can usually be put off, like cars, washing machines, solar panels, or computers.

Trying to rebuild manufacturing while creating a recession on purpose is like trying to do a pole vault after bolting a sandbag to your ankles.

The overall average US tariff rate is at its highest in almost a century, thanks to a range of other industry-specific taxes affecting products such as vehicles and steel.

Instead of giving bosses a reason to hire, the whiplash approach to the trade war is sowing confusion and uncertainty. CEOs need clarity on where tariffs will be in the long run. But under Trump, it’s not even clear where tariffs will be at the end of the day, let alone the end of the year.

“It’s a policy choice to sow this much uncertainty. And that uncertainty has a cost,” said Betsey Stevenson, professor of economics and public policy at the University of Michigan and a former chief economist at the Department of Labor under Obama.

“The tariff mess has utterly stopped sales globally and domestically. Everyone is on pause. Orders have collapsed,” one machinery executive said in a survey released last month conducted by the Institute for Supply Management (ISM).

Manufacturing employment has been shrinking for decades in the United States as the economy shifted from factories to services including technology and finance.

About 95% of America’s job growth since the 1950s has been in the service sector, according to Stevenson, the University of Michigan professor. Chris Cocks, the CEO of toy maker Hasbro, told CNN’s Audie Cornish that because of the higher cost of labor, it’s 50% to 60% more expensive to make toys in the United States instead of overseas.

Many factories have struggled to find workers who have the skills and desire to work at manufacturing sites that are often located away from major population centers.

Lawrence worries that Trump’s tariff tactics will end up hurting American factories by simultaneously making it more expensive to manufacture in the United States and by angering overseas customers. “We are setting ourselves up to be a highly uncompetitive country,” he said, “while alienating our allies and pissing off the biggest markets.”
