Scots tourist shot in Mae Hong Son

Featured Replies

"The suspect met the tourist 3 weeks earlier " !!!  So we have a drug dealer and an overstayer who know one another and it appears the dealer was quite willing to assist the victim ( overstaying tourist)   .    mmm not jumping to conclusions but seems more of a coincidence !!

Because that’s the serious crime in this incident.

The police are perhaps focusing on his overstay because the Thai man may get off scot free (phun not intended) as the police might say the shooting would not have happened if the Scotsman hadn't overstayed

Yeah...investigate throughly on the tourist who got shot for his overstay and forget about the criminal who shot him as he is a Thai.

Well if he didn't overstay he wouldn't got shot, I also think there's more to this story.

The best thing that you can do here when out in public is to be as humble and respectful as possible, even when somebody does something stupid on the road. That's no reason to react and act out, here that can cost your life. You just take a deep breath, you count to five, and you just say okay I moved here because I wanted to be some someplace that was less predictable, if I wanted predictable I would have stayed in the US. I'm here because I like the fact that the place is different, the people are different, the culture is different, and I understand the fact that Thailand is not a foreign country, Thailand is a distant planet.

Things happen to me everyday here that I don't understand, I've learned to take a deep breath laugh it off and move on.

Yep. When visiting the West, it is bizarre to see people get mad at one another on the roads, flicking the bird etc for the smallest thing. Wouldn’t dream of doing that nowadays unless it were serious. If you F up on Thai roads, offer up a wai and move on, if someone cuts you up, have a chunter to yourself then quickly move on. The alternative: a whole lot of stress and possibly shortened life.

In a bizarre twist, the gunman is reported to have then helped the injured man into his vehicle and driven him to Pai Hospital, where doctors treated him. However, Kitinan fled the hospital before officers arrived.

A futile attempt to lesson the up-coming sentence ?

Doubt the sentence will be particularly heavy with it being a Thai shooting a farang.......not that that should have any bearing of course.

My wife's uncle shoot his next door neighbour dead after falsely accusing him of having an affair with his wife.

Got five years.

If you haven’t noticed yet, overstay is a serious matter most places in the world with borders 😉

...just not the UK - where you get a free monthly hotel room and an iPad.

Maybe either, or both, but of one thing we can be certain - a crime was committed against fashion.

Oh....I thought the colour coordinated lipstick and cupids bow was charming.☺️

Refugees is another status, not different from any western modern countries, but it will change, hopefully

The constant denigration of Thais by some farangs is nothing new.

Why do these snarky misfits remain in Thailand?

Are they being held here against their will?

If not, they should do everybody a favor and bag out.

Thank you, and well said.

Oh dear. I'm 84, and I've lived here permanently and happily with my Thai wife since 1983, minus a few years working in Taiwan. What are you suggesting I should do ?

Yeah, it probably is same serious as usual. Drug dealer shot him. They meet a couple of weeks earlier. Drug payments or business that gone wrong??? So, yeah he can be a criminal too.

At least the dealer Mr Kitinan drove him to the hospital, as per the article. I think he is a nice man. 🤩

Foreigners fault.  If he had departed as per his visa he wouldn't have been here to get shot.  Logic, twisted, but still logic.

If Anutin gets in as PM. Leave the country. He does not like falangs.

I certainly don't see him  bringing any great positives to the expat community........farangs as tourists, I assume he knows which side his bread is buttered.

He doesn't like smelly farangs. I can't disagree with him on that.

Never mind gunning down people, overstay, even by just one day, is the real crime in Thailand... 😆

I am pretty sure that in the eyes of the most of the Thais - visa overstay is a way more serious crime than shooting foreigner in the arm. I put emphasis on the “foreigner” part here. Not all people residing in this country are equal. Never forget it.

Add to this that the Thai most probably  felt that there was something fishy about the Scot and used his gun to arrest the stranger for the further interrogation by RTP. May be will even get a medal for his actions.

Both incidents are against the law and so both should be investigated or should he get bonus points for being shot?
