This morning after visiting my regular coffee shop I was on the way back to my house when all of a sudden I got cut off by some complete ignoramus. So I honked him. He stopped his car, got out, swore at me in Thai and kicked my wheel then drove off..

There's just absolutely no logic to this place, is there?

So don't honk!!!

Jeez, it's not difficult is it.....

So you're a coward and let people walk over you.   I'd rather live like a lion and be killed, than live like a mouse, like you obviously do.

The point is if they drive like that, they're crazy and angry to begin with. (90% of the time)

Honking won't fix a crazy person. It will just agitate them more.

In China, continuously honking of horns is normal.

30 years ago in Shanghai, nobody drove cars without honking horns, once every three seconds, for no reason at all, while engaged in city driving.

Completely acceptable, but also monotonous.

Wish I had a video.

But you never see psycho foreigners blasting their horns aggressively.

I almost don't ever hit it, even if someone does something stupid. The reason? It's likely to startle them and make it more likely that they make a further mistake. Generally, they will apologise if they know they did something stupid. No need to rub it in.

Just yesterday, a bike pulled out in the road prematurely, a dangerous act. I didn't hit the horn, as that might have made them panic in the middle of their original error. I just stopped and shook my head. They immediately acknowledged and 'apologised' with a nod of the head and that was that. No need to humiliate or to create a scene.

This guy was being nice to you and you should consider yourself lucky and next time you probably won’t be around to tell the story of how you incited your demise.

Be very careful with this.  I had an incident recently in Hua hin.  The guy was driving his car erratically on a small Soi, I was on a motorbike.  He brushed near me and I hit my motorbike horn.

He jammed on his brakes, backed up, and started chasing me.  At one point he got right on my tail I thought he might run me over.  I finally pulled into the mall and he got stuck in traffic behind me.

Agree. There was a good explanatory story about how Thais go nuclear over what, to Westerners, are small affronts. In one of the newspapers years ago, a retired senior cop, who was among those sent abroad to represent the Thai police at seminars, explained how Thais don't go from fight to win, they go from fight to kill (or seriously injure) someone who has made them lose face. He said in the West a fight goes from A: fight, to B: a win or a scuffle and an end to the fighting without much physical damage; or more rarely to C severe injury/death.

In Thailand, he said, a fight escalates much faster, and skips 'B' - going from A, all the way to C and very quicklykill/serious injuries. Also, as we know, they gang up routinely if they can.

So yes, given the high gun ownership here, it's best to be 'courteous' on the road - even if many others are not.

Me too. I like to lean on the horn for a good few seconds just to make sure they get the message. Been 22 years so far - no guns and no fights.

Maybe just the way I drive, but surely you have to be in a position for them to be able to "cut you off" and maybe my idea of personal space is different. If you can see them coming you can make adjustments and it won't happen.

How about this? You pull up in a queue at a red traffic light and because there's a road to the left, you leave a gap between you and the car in front, to avoid blocking the side road. The turd behind decides to drive around you and cut in front, blocking the side road. No way to avoid incidents like that unless one starts driving like an inconsiderate idiot too.

The point still stands, living your life cowering away from people and backing down, no thanks. You carry on though.

not escalating a minor incident into a major and possibly life threatening event is hardly "cowering away" except in the eyes of the Thaivisa hard men of course

Aggressive honking can be just another form of mental illness.

Driving in Pattaya, people cut in front of each other all the time, no horn honking. I just let them in, and they let me in, no big deal. Have to have a lot of patience to drive here, and not to be in a rush. Much different than the west, but it works, usually.

But Bob, you should already know all that.

Do not stop keep going unless you have to. Stopping will not help just make it worse. Blow the hooters and I have horns on the bike, They work, when in this situation. Let them know then open the throttle. Stopping you lose. Ex wife taught me never stop, you will get shot. Even if you are wright/wrong go to the police.

We didn't see the driving incident.

You say 'cutting off', where as I may say merging, then I would slow down and let him in.

Kicking tyres, not something I've ever done or would ever do, but I see lots of strange things by road users.

I've posted comments in the past about people for having mental illness, I've had my comments removed, so it's highly unlikely the guy kicking tyres has mental health problems 😂

The horn antagonizers some people, it does for me, I rarely, if ever use it, my vehicle horn only to warn of danger, maybe to move a dog that's in my path etc.

As far as I'm concerned, I don't drive aggressively, I'm retired from all that, used to doing 250k's a year, now doing 40k's to 50k's for pleasure, enjoying life as it comes, drive defensively, expect anyone, local or foreign to do some stupid things/maneuverers, do your best to avoid accidents, always remember you are not the centre of other peoples universe, and stay safe, drive by the rules of the road, stay calm, it's better to be a nice live coward than an aggressive dead hero.

Strangely, I once read about Thailand after WWII (I think it was by Alexander MacDonald) that stated Thais honked constantly and the streets were a cacophony of noise. It appears quieter today.

You're a scary cat scared of Thai men because they might have a gun. That's the long and short of it, Rambo.

Yep same. Don't get me wrong I don't do it with only minor provocation, but if someone has IMO been an absolute p*ick then he's hearing about it. Might have a gun?? Lol, oh no, I'll just be a coward then and let everyone take me for a mug in life.

That's probably what Walt needs to bring him to his senses.        He's just itching for some major road rage it appears.

Oh my goodness but you're a tough one! The problem with getting killed is that it can be so inconvenient at times as it gets in the way of all your fun, enjoyment and plans for the future. Why would I allow someone else to take that away from me? Their existence on this planet means nothing to me.

The real cowards are people on the internet that hide behind anonymity, like hiding behind their mother's skirt, to talk big and tough. If they really were tough, they wouldn't feel any need at all to boast about it on an anonymous forum. Only cowards find comfort in that.

Why do you worry about what others think of you? Do you lack the self-confidence to overcome that?

There is plenty of road rage in the US.

Some people are miserable, angry, frustrated and just itching to take out their agression on anyone.

I agree every time I go back there it seems like it's getting worse. Granted I do spend time in Los Angeles which is a megalopolis where the traffic is out of control, but still people on the roads are becoming increasingly more aggressive, ruder and more hostile.

Just gave someone a good old blast on the horn an hour ago.

Tired of waiting to pull out left from a Big C i guess he pulled out in front of me causing me to brake abruptly !

Instinctively i looked in my rear view mirror but nobody behind me.

So the entitled prick saved a good 5 seconds by pulling out into moving traffic when it wasn’t safe ?

I can only hope he lost some face in front of any passengers in the car, he deserves to.

I don’t use my horn that often tbh but on some occasions it pays to educate the ignorant and enrage the entitled !!

You are added to my "ignore" list.  I am proud to avoid trouble in a country in which I am a guest.

indeed,   there are normal cowards who act tough in real life, and then there are "special" cowards who only act tough on anonymous internet forums

So beeping your horn actually educates people?
