Teenager Electrocuted While Pushing Motorcycle Through Flood

A 17-year-old boy has died after being electrocuted while pushing his motorcycle through floodwaters in Samut Prakan late on the 7 September.

The incident occurred on Phraeksa Road, near a noodle shop and heading towards Khlong Kao in Mueang district, following heavy and continuous rainfall that left the area submerged.

Rescue workers from the Ruam Kuson Samut Prakan Foundation reported that the victim, identified only as Thanakorn, had been pushing his motorbike through deep water when a speeding pickup truck drove past, sending a surge of water crashing into him.

Knocked off balance, the teenager fell against a roadside barrier used for ongoing roadworks. The barrier had electric cables connected to lighting equipment and officials believe a current leakage had made the wires live. When the boy made contact, he was instantly electrocuted and collapsed face-first into the water, where he died.

Police officers, rescue teams and staff from the Provincial Electricity Authority rushed to the scene. Power in the immediate area was cut to prevent further risk and dangers, before the body could be recovered.

Investigators are now examining the precise cause of the leakage and reviewing safety measures at the construction site.

Criminal negligence. No circuit breakers, nothing to cut the power in case of shortening.

But not unusual!

Not a good way to go, and so young too.

This is happening too often when it floods.
Shame on you Thailand, you will continue to do nothing about the number of incompetent electricians.

take a stroll thru any night market and count how many electric extension wires are laying on the ground for people to walk over

 it's amazing it doesn't hapen 100x a day

It’s tragic to see such potential lost at a young age. The blame lies with BMA and PEA. It's truly disheartening. RIP 😢

I avoid all puddles, and flooded walkways & road if walking.  Saw a dog get zapped & killed, walking a couple meters in front of me, on the walkway.  Water was pooled from a recent rain and the dog came in contact with an illuminated sign or exposed wire in water, then maybe grounded itself.

Don't know exactly, but it yiped, then rolled over dead.  We, daughter in hand at Karon Beach, stopped dead in our tracks and made a U-turn back to hotel :cheesy:

I don't trust any sitting water, or touch anything metal when walking around.   If I do, railing or what ever to steady myself, it's with the back of my hand or my arm against, so I'll just get knocked on my butt at worse, and not do the death grip thingy.   Same with showers at hotels, turn on without grasping.

Mind boggling that people walk through flooded streets and such.  Not just fear of getting zapped, but usually flooded because the sewers (storm drains) are back up ... no thanks.

". . .reviewing safety measures. . ."  Translation, will do absolutely nothing regarding safety measures.

Seriously?  That truck was probably just 1 of 100 cars and trucks that whizzed by and threw up a wake.  It could have been any one of us.

Think it was meant as a flippant remark.

How can you review something that does not exist?
