Maybe, but how many times can you ring the bell to buy a round for everyone? Just once, maybe? Also, how does one survive on 100 baht a day for food?

The key to surviving on a 100 baht/day food budget is to stop ringing the bloody bell!

Spare a thought for all those sick buffaloes. Also, how do you enjoy a night out without ringing the bell?

Not my buffaloes.

Here's a twist on the old chicken or egg conundrum: What came first, the bell-ringer or the balloon-chaser?

Not a very good friend by my standards. Note the usual group of Thais standing around grinning.

I have not rung the bell, ever. It's not my responsibility to buy other people's drinks, but I guess I should try it at least once.

Bell ringer, of course! 🤣

That sounds delicious, I’ve been missing Mama noodles since being away from Thailand. 70 baht for fish and chips? The cheapest I found in Chiang Mai was around 280, but I still prefer The Duke’s version lol.

I never ate at Duke's. Saw the menu, too expensive.

If you are a Duke's guy I would question whether you like living in Thailand.

It’s a fun, exciting experience, especially for the farang bar owner.

The only issue is the poor, hard up farang trying to impress his equally hard-up fellow farang.

I guess I would not mind if I was at that financial level. Hope that happens sometime soon.

Honestly, I can handle Chiang Mai for about three months max, then I need to get out. Duke’s is the only decent place, at least from what I’ve tried, and it’s a lot cheaper than spots back in the UK.

Personally, I wouldn’t waste your money!

it’s just a spur of the moment show off move. It doesn’t impress anyone except the bar owner, the freeloaders, and the folks who crawl out of the woodwork for free drinks. I was too drunk, too naive. The only person you should impress is yourself.

My old neighbor in Chiang Mai only ate at those pricey expat places as well. We used to go out for wine. He eventually relocated back to the Usa. Nothing wrong with that, he just did not fit in here. He was also very into golfing and running the a/c. Never complained though. Sometimes you just need to realize that you are struggling and are in the wrong situation. One of the major tells is an affinity for expat eateries.

That’s got me thinking about BKK!, much better class of restaurants.

Another reason to stay away from Pattaya and Phuket.

The food in Chiang Mai is great! No idea what you are on about. Why are you wasting your time trying to find European food anyway?

Also happened to me in Siem Reap. involving a fellow countryman. When it came to paying the bill, he returned from a local ATM saying it would not take his card. I paid the bill and later found out that he had no funds in his card account. Like norsurin - never again!

From my first trip to Thailand 25 years ago it's always been 2 separate bins. I've never really bought lady drinks unless I bar fined the lady. I've never had one problem even in bars where I'm not known.

A lot of places in Cambodia don't use bins. If some guy sits with you it can get vague on who is ordering what. Cambodia is where you get real skint guys, Thailand is nothing.

I even had someone share the taxi into town in Siem Reap from the airport. They were waiting at the line asking people in the taxi que. They got out in town and walked off leaving me with the full taxi fare. I think it was $5 or so at that time.

I recall a scrounger at the Ekamai bus station who didn't have enough for the bus ride to Pattaya....just a young European lad. He needed 20 more baht to get a ticket. Who the heck travels around without even small change in his pocket!

Seems like he couldn't pay his share of the beers/drinks lead to the fifth.Anyway violence is not the answer.

Happened to me in Bangkok.I meet a guy from my country in the embassy. We agree to go and have some beers and drinks together. We agree to share the bill.He said he need to use the toilet and didn't return. The bill was about 3000 baht.Irritating, but i sat a couple of hours more and paid the bill that ended about 4500 baht.I never agree to share bills again with anybody. That said it happens sometimes that i don't have enough cash to pay but i know the manager so he just say i can pay the next day.And i allways do that.

Cardinal rule.  Always get separate bins .  Never, ever share a bin with a stranger.

Look at the bright side.  You got rid of a freeloader FOREVER for 1500 baht.  Half of 3000.

Take Sonny’s advice.
