Viral Dance Clips Spark Legal Warnings from Thai Police

Composite for reference only

A social media trend featuring elderly individuals dancing in scanty attire has raised eyebrows in Thailand. The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) warns that these provocative clips, often shared to garner views, may contravene Thai laws on inappropriate online content. The viral phenomenon has caused significant ripples, underscoring the possible legal repercussions for those involved.

The CIB urges all age groups, not just the elderly, to consider the ramifications before creating such content. Posting obscene or explicit materials online can breach Section 14(4) of the Computer Crimes Act. Punishments include up to five years in prison, fines up to 100,000 baht (approximately £2,280), or both.

Authorities express further concern that con artists might exploit these videos by editing them and using them as leverage for blackmail. Unsuspecting individuals could face threats to disclose the manipulated content unless a ransom is paid. The CIB stresses vigilance and awareness, aiming to prevent such distressing scenarios.

Looking forward, the police intend to continue monitoring these trends and increasing public awareness about the severe implications. They emphasise the importance of social responsibility when engaging with digital content. The CIB remains committed to safeguarding the digital landscape for the Thai populace.

Key Takeaways

  • Viral dance clips by the elderly are under legal scrutiny in Thailand.
  • Participants risk breaching the Computer Crimes Act, facing severe penalties.
  • Awareness is critical to preventing exploitation and potential blackmail.

Facebook Thailand censors nudity in any form.  My GF posts videos/photos of me in the kitchen with my chest covered by a towel.  On holiday in Spain this Summer, she avoided taking photos of people in swimming costumes.

Exactly who is responsible for deciding what may or what may not be unsafe for the Thai populace.

There is, I think, a lack of transparency here.

At what age do they become old people, so they can stop doing what "young" people do.

Both this post and the related teens porn exposure post touch on an increasing use of tech/AI to falsely make videos using a person's likeness transposed to other bodies performing porn to purposely extract money to "protect" people from having their likeness spread on the internet. This is resulting in real harm to people, including the young taking their own lives when they see these fake portrayals and there is seemingly nothing that they can do to stop it. So ... yes I support. "Big Brother" stepping in to try and protect.

I saw one of those granny nudist dancing videos, although I couldn’t tell if she was naked or clothed. Either way what she had on needed ironing…

What is a viral dance, a new medical condition or a re-introduction by St. Vitus?

St. Vitus dance, also known as Sydenham chorea, is a neurological disorder characterized by involuntary, jerky, and dance-like movements, often seen in children and adolescents.

I've seen the videos and gagged or laughed - I couldn't decide. No full nudity.

But I mean well done for the elderly females may they have freedom of expression.

So nothing you cannot un-see...

sounds more like a storm in a B-cup, let the ladies express themselves.

So parading about in Soi Cowboy in next to othing is acceptable, even dancing naked on a stage in a bar that can be viewed from the street is acceptable. But granny wiggling her booty in a bustierre is not? Okay, if you MUST ban it, at least do it under health and safety laws, not under prohibition laws. It should be investigated by the health ministry as damaging to public health by causing vomiting, not by the vice squad.

Too MUCH transparency, according to CIB.
