Bangkok's Victory Monument will soon see its largest transformation in two decades, aimed at enhancing the city's public transportation infrastructure. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) announced that the area around the monument will undergo significant changes focusing on commuter behavior and needs. This revamp is expected to improve connectivity and encourage public transport use over private cars.

The upgrade involves urban planning, landscape design, and transport engineering to benefit commuters by enhancing connections between buses, vans, motorcycle taxis, and skytrains. The project aims to support the "Car Free Everyday" initiative by making public transport more accessible and reducing vehicle dependency. Planned improvements include shorter walking distances, redesigned bus stops, covered walkways, wider footpaths, and additional greenery.

A standout feature of the renovation is the construction of elevated pedestrian bridges connecting the four blocks surrounding the monument. The Ratchawithi Skywalk will be extended to link Victory Monument directly to Tuek Chai Intersection, providing access to eight nearby hospitals. These enhancements aim to make the area more pedestrian-friendly and reduce transportation congestion.

The redesigned bus terminal will feature an improved layout to minimize congestion, with bus stops strategically placed across zones to avoid double parking and improve identification for commuters. These changes are intended to create a seamless and efficient travel experience for daily commuters and visitors alike.

Key Takeaways

  • Victory Monument's revamp aims to enhance public transport connectivity.
  • Elevated pedestrian bridges and skywalks to improve commuter access.
  • New bus terminal layout to decrease congestion and improve efficiency.

They've already started construction... 😃

Not going to change van and car usage at all. This is a transfer spot most people getting there do so by other transport means

A condo high rise with a shopping mall could be very productive.

What victory, over whom does it commemorate?

The 'Victory' of the Japanese Empire supported interim Thai government over the Vichy French who had occupied part of Thai territory since the colonial days and were pushed out on orders from Nazi Germany.

I think the refurb plans should include finding a better victory.

Appeasement Monument may be more apt, but doesn't have the same ring to it.
