Is a used MG3 a good option for a learner car?

Featured Replies

My partner has had her licence for 3 years but hasn't really had any driving experience because the Mitsu Triton we have is really too big for her, and I don't have the patience to teach her to drive it.

So need something cheap and reliable, preferably under 200K that she can put a few dents in without worrying about it.

Would a MG3 fit the bill?

  • My misses loves her Neta V, 25k on the clock, 2 years old, 219k. It's a great little car to drive, very smooth, had it two months, and driven 1,000km with no complaints from either of us.

  • Seems perfect to me. Make sure you let her pick it out.

  • I learned to drive in an MG B!

Wouldn't be my choice, or any car <200k.   Why not rent something for  month, about the size of something she would end up buying, if not the same make/model she likes.

MG3 now (HEV) is way nicer than the MG3s of days past.  They were a POS, IMHO.

I would think a 1 month rental would be <30k, and better than <200k, only to find out, it's a POS.  She'll probably get most of her dings within the first month anyway.   My daughter did, thankfully all stationary object as she learned the dimensions, all 4 corners, of the car :cheesy:

Take out full coverage w/zero deductible.

Plenty of second hand cars out there around the 200K mark, I just bought one, private sale. No different to buying in your original country. Exercise due diligence, have a Thai assist with purchase & accept there are no guarantees. Good luck taking a rental back with a "couple of dings", even with insurance.....police will become involved.🙃🙃

I don't think so.

The Rheinmetall MG 3 is a German general-purpose machine gun chambered for the 7.62×51mm NATO cartridge.

How 'bout an older used Toyota?  Short-bed pickup shouldn't be that much different sizewise from a small sedan.

There are plenty out there under 100K.   Toyota's run forever and repairs if needed are cheap.

Don't you drive it just the same, left is go, right is stop, and that round thing in front of you is for left & right. Shiny things in the top middle , and one each side are called mirrors.

That was relevant say 50-60 years ago?

They stopped making them in 1980 after an 18 year run.

MG3 found to be the worst car to buy in Australia with a : 'Don't buy it' warning. owing to its poor

safety records.

Don't know about reliable, ask us in another year or two.

Suzuki CELERIO , Mitsubishi ATTRAGE or Nissan March search around can get a 2023 model with warranty left

Neta is a wildcard dealerships all over the country closing and changing to different brands

Insurance is becoming an issue due to lack of OEM parts and Insurers are no longer renewing 1st /2nd class insurance

However, TQM, Neta's insurance broker in Thailand, called Ms Jutamas to cancel the second-class insurance policy she held offered by Viriyah Insurance, even before Hozon New Energy Automobile Co, the Chinese parent of Neta, formally announced its bankruptcy.

At that point, she decided to secure a third-class insurance policy offered directly by Viriyah Insurance in case Neta's Thai subsidiary also entered into bankruptcy. However, she wondered which company would be responsible for her car's maintenance going forward and whether it would be difficult in the future to secure some form of compensation, given the parent company's status.

Isuzu D-Max 4 door 2.5. Bought within my village where everyone knows everyone so likely no scam. A local, car savvy friend of our family was the go-between. Could have bought a smaller 4 door Honda around same price. Yup, plenty of cars out there.🙃🙃

Any of the smaller cars are going to be good for her.
I'll have a 2013 Ford Fiesta for sale here soon, nothing wrong, we just don't use it

Ford Focus and Fiestas are about the cheapest used car options out there and I think that has a lot to do with gearbox issues.

Damn, have I been doing it wrong for the past 50 years

Opps sorry, RIGHT is go, LEFT is stop, as we all know!

You can’t rent a car for a learner drive because without a valid drivers licence; there is no insurance.

There are lots of good cars around for 200-300,000 baht. A four or five year old, low mileage Suzuki Ciaz would be my choice.

She already has a 5 year licence, just no actual driving experience.

I've had them and the MG's and never had any issues but clearly some do. Not that big a deal in the grand scheme of things to fix
Either way, this car will sell within a few days at best. The market for the small cars is always hot.

Mazda 2 would be my choice.

Suzuki Swift and as mentioned, Ford Fiesta's would be good as well.

Toyota Sure dealerships have a pretty good name if you're going to use a dealer.

Don't the Focus and Fiestas have issues with gearboxes?

I know there were some problems early on.

I'm only guessing but if you're looking at 10 year old cars, if there was a problem it would've happened or been fixed by now.

I know 2 people who have bought a second hand Fiesta and Focus with no problems.

If you're concerned about it, just look at other brands I guess.
