UPDATE
Road Collapse at Vajira Hospital After Road Showed Warning Signs

image.jpeg

A major road collapse occurred on the morning of 24 September 2025 outside Vajira Hospital on Samsen Road in Dusit district, Bangkok. The subsidence formed a large cavity around 50 metres deep, extending across the frontage of both Vajira Hospital and the nearby Samsen Police Station. Emergency teams from the Samsen Fire and Rescue Department were quickly dispatched, with authorities confirming that no injuries or fatalities were reported.

image.png

Prior to the collapse, the affected section of road had shown signs of instability. The surface was uneven, resembling a basin, with frequent waterlogging making it difficult for vehicles to travel at normal speed. Images taken before the incident confirm these early warnings, showing a visibly sunken stretch that later gave way.

image.png

Officials noted that the collapse continued to worsen after the initial subsidence, with the cavity expanding along the busy Samsen Road. The incident has forced traffic diversions and disrupted hospital access, prompting Vajira Hospital to suspend outpatient services across all categories. City Governor Chadchart Sittipunt visited the site immediately to assess the situation and review response measures.

image.jpeg

In addition, the Metropolitan Electricity Authority acted quickly to mitigate further risks. Power lines and communication cables connected to poles near the collapse site were cut and removed to prevent damage from the unstable ground. This measure was taken to reduce the chance of secondary hazards, including electrical accidents or further structural failures. The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has immediately ordered a halt to construction of the Purple Line subway tunnel in the affected area.

Authorities are now working to stabilise the area and assess the full extent of the damage. Engineers will determine the cause of the collapse and evaluate repair options for restoring the road safely. Traffic management and public safety remain the top priorities while investigations continue.

Key Takeaways

• A 50-metre-deep road collapse occurred on 24 September outside Vajira Hospital in Bangkok.

• Early signs included uneven road surfaces and water accumulation before the collapse.

• Authorities cut nearby power and communication lines to prevent further damage.

UPDATE
BMA Issues Urgent Measures After Samsen Road Collapse

image.png

A major road subsidence outside Vajira Hospital on Samsen Road in Bangkok has prompted urgent safety measures. The incident, which occurred on 24 September 2025, damaged a large water main and caused flooding inside the underground rail construction site. Authorities confirmed no injuries, though three vehicles were damaged, and Vajira Hospital has suspended outpatient services for at least two days.

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt explained that the collapse happened at the construction site of the MRT Purple Line South, near Vajira Hospital Station. The ground gave way at the connection point between the tunnel and the station, leading to soil displacement and water leakage. In response, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), Metropolitan Waterworks Authority and Metropolitan Electricity Authority cut water and power supplies in the area to reduce risk.

image.png

The governor announced seven emergency measures to control the situation. These include shutting off and supplying alternative water, cutting surrounding electricity, sealing tunnel leaks, assessing building safety, installing monitoring systems and CCTV, checking structural stability of nearby main buildings and coordinating traffic management with police. A contingency team has also been formed to act in case of rainfall, which could worsen soil erosion and water flow.

Officials confirmed the danger zone has been declared off-limits to the public. Vajira Hospital has closed outpatient services for two days, though inpatient care continues as normal. Other hospitals in the BMA network are available to handle outpatient cases during this period.

image.png

The BMA and Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) have set up a command centre at the site. Regular meetings are scheduled at 12.00 and 18.00 pm daily to monitor developments and update responses. Governor Chadchart stressed that public safety and structural stability remain the highest priorities.

Key Takeaways

• Bangkok imposed seven urgent measures after Samsen Road subsided near Vajira Hospital.

• No injuries were reported, though three vehicles were damaged and outpatient services are suspended for two days.

• A command centre has been established to monitor risks, with safety of the public declared the top priority.

UPDATE
Anutin: Road Collapse Repairs to Take at Least One Year

image.jpeg

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul announced on 24 September 2025 that repairing the damaged of the collapsed road and structure of the Purple Line subway tunnel could take no less than one year. The collapse on Samsen Road, in front of Vajira Hospital, has caused major disruption, though no casualties were reported. Anutin confirmed the matter will be treated as urgent in the first Cabinet meeting held later the same day.

Speaking at 11:30, Anutin, said he had already ordered officials to investigate the cause. He directed inquiries to the Governor of the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) for technical details. He stressed that while no injuries occurred, property damage must be thoroughly assessed and accountability determined.

The Prime Minister said he had instructed officials to ensure safety checks across the site and surrounding areas. He emphasised the importance of determining the exact cause of the collapse before any restoration works proceed. When asked if conditions would return to normal within the week, he replied that only temporary fixes could be expected soon, while full structural restoration would take at least a year.

Before leaving the area, Anutin observed the nearby Samsen Police Station with Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Pipat Ratchakitprakarn. The low-rise building was flagged as vulnerable due to its shallow foundations. Authorities will also assess the adjacent police flats for potential risks linked to the collapse.

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt lconfirmed that it is believed, the incident was caused by soil flowing into the Purple Line subway tunnel construction. The section runs from Parliament through Sam Sen, under the Chao Phraya River, and toward Suksawat. The collapse occurred at one of the most complex points of the project, the future Vajira Hospital station, which is located 30 metres underground.

Chadchart explained that cracks appeared in a shallow tunnel, about 15 metres deep, where soil began to flow into construction spaces. This weakened the surface road, causing it to cave in and bringing down utility poles while rupturing water pipes. The broken pipes worsened the problem by washing even more soil into the tunnel.

The incident has drawn urgent attention at the highest levels of government. Both immediate stabilisation works and long-term repairs will be required. Authorities are now under pressure to restore safety, complete investigations and minimise disruption to residents, hospital operations and surrounding infrastructure.

Key Takeaways

• Prime Minister Anutin said repairing the road collapse will take at least one year.

• Governor Chadchart confirmed soil seepage into the Purple Line tunnel caused the collapse.

• Authorities are assessing nearby police buildings and flats for structural risks.

Heard there was a little flooding and a warning was issued before.

.

30X30 meters. Flooding for sure. I pray no one hurt.

50 meters deep! They should investigate any tunnel works nearby.

No. No they didn't "build bangkok on mud"

Few buckets of sand - job done !

Fill the hole in with old baht notes then it will never sink again' or Anutin can just look at it and turn it to stone🤔

I wonder if there are any jail cells holding prisoners in that police station.

UPDATE

At 13:05 on 24 September, the road in front of Vajira Hospital subsided further, causing an electrical pylon and the large concrete support pillar, where a pickup truck had previously been parked and recovered, to collapse into the cavity. Engineers, reporters and officials who had been monitoring the situation were forced to run from the area for their safety.

Of course not.  It's an alluvial plain.  Bangkok is built on silt and clay.

Yes, they did. but not mud, it's called Clay. 100 years ago, the government had no clue about anything, as they continue to have no clue today.

They should never have build Bangkok where it sits today.

Bangkok sits on the Chao Phraya delta, which has been formed through extensive Quaternary sedimentary processes over the past 2-3 million years. The 20-40-meter deep and thick layer of soft clay and mud represents multiple cycles of marine transgression and regression during Pleistocene and Holocene epochs.

At the current rate, there is a very high probability that bangkok will sink another 2-4 meters over the next 100 years.

Not including sea level rise.

The 2-4 meter range assumes continued groundwater extraction at moderate levels and ongoing urban loading. This means we might see 1-1.5 meters in the first 30 years, another meter over the following 30 years, then progressively smaller increments.

What do you think of this analysis I did with Claude:

Combined Effects Timeline Analysis for Bangkok

Going through each timeframe, combining both Bangkok subsidence and sea level rise while accounting for their different temporal characteristics.

10-Year Projection (2025-2035): Land subsidence will likely contribute 15-25 centimeters of relative elevation loss during this period, as we're still in the more rapid phase of consolidation. Sea level rise will add approximately 4-6 centimeters, assuming continued acceleration of current trends. The combined relative sea level rise reaches 19-31 centimeters, with subsidence dominating the signal.

20-Year Projection (2025-2045): Subsidence accumulates to 25-40 centimeters as consolidation rates begin to slow in some areas. Sea level rise contributes 10-18 centimeters, reflecting the expected acceleration in global rates. Combined relative elevation loss reaches 35-58 centimeters. At this point, both processes contribute significantly to flood risk.

40-Year Projection (2025-2065): This timeframe becomes more complex because we're entering the period where consolidation processes may be slowing significantly in well-managed areas, while sea level rise acceleration becomes more pronounced. Subsidence contributes approximately 50-80 centimeters, but this assumes no major policy changes in groundwater management. Sea level rise adds 25-50 centimeters, depending on emissions scenarios and ice sheet dynamics. Combined effects reach 75-130 centimeters of relative elevation loss.

60-Year Projection (2025-2085): Here we encounter substantial uncertainty in both processes. Subsidence might contribute 70-120 centimeters if current trends continue, but this assumes the clay layers haven't approached their consolidation limits. Sea level rise becomes the dominant uncertainty factor, potentially contributing 40-90 centimeters depending on ice sheet behavior and emission pathways. Combined relative sea level rise could reach 110-210 centimeters.
