How much does she earn per month helping the elderly?

We don't tell each other what we have or what we get.

@save the frogs What are you talking? What does Pattaya have to do with anything?

Girl lives and works in one province. Her mum lives in another. Unless her mum agrees to live in the same province as her daughter, what then?

Same with me, and one of my only 2 visits to USA (2003) after retiring here, 2000.  Went back to help my brother care for our mother, as he was still working, and she got to the point, she couldn't be left alone.  That was 3 months before she passed onward to the next dimension.

Two other brothers there with more than enough money that they could have hired someone to sit with her....bastards.

Needing minimal care, just didn't want her to burn the house down, as a bit of dementia kicked in while the last stage of cancer took her out.

Other visit, 2006, was minimal time, long weekend, to sign a piece of paper & pick up check :cheesy:

Couldn't leave fast enough, both times.

Family structure here definitely breaking down, as they more to the big city for bigger salaries.  Families and work schedules keep them from returning, along with their mounting debt, while living beyond their means.   Now everyone is screwed.

My kid keeps trying to get me & wife to move to Krung Thep, so she can care for us in our old age.   Nice try ... I really think she just wants us to cook for her, since she works too much 🙄

She learning to cook, as I troll her with photos of homecooked meals, so maybe she quit telling me how deceptive I'll get and need her to care for me.

Already offered to send the wife money after I crap out, if she needs it.  I'm like ... "feel free to send it now"  😎

The OP asks "what's happening to the world" as though it's an epidemic.

Is it an epidemic or a rather rare exception though?

Thais are family oriented. I doubt many children are so cruel as to completely abandon their parents.

Depends if the gambling or Yabba addiction has them...

Bt.100 per hour?

That seems quite high.

mostly due to bad parenting, alcoholic parents, broken families.

but also could be due to poverty.

but generally, if you have a good family they will support the parents in old age. (as far as I know)

but OP's thesis may be valid. I'm not ominscient.

No welfare or support.

Shame on Thailand

This is shameful. However, it's a patriarchal society that only cares about enriching those in power. The deadbeat fathers should be forced to pay child support. Then again, they probably lacks the funds.

Talking about "helping" but getting paid to do so? Is that an American thing?

I take care of my wife's, very old and demanding aunt. There is no payment involved, just a moral obligation. And funny enough she is well of but in case of her death we won't get anything.

Not everything is money.

It was not that long ago that people had large extended families and had children to take care of the elderly.

It was also not that long ago that girls would be ashamed of having an out of wedlock birth, and for that reason, there were many fewer single mothers. But now single mothers are celebrated and subsidized.

There was a time when a "real" man had a wife and took care of his family. Men that took advantage of women and abandoned them when they got pregnant were also looked down on. Now they too are celebrated,

"That which gets rewarded gets repeated."

Thanks lefty.

Everything is money when you have none.

Agree but it should never get that far.

If so you have failed.

We are all managers of ourselves, some are incompetent managers

How many times have we seen men whining about their wive and kids here and MOST of the responses are to dump her/them?

It's pretty easy for people like us that have never been poor, and that have always had option to say that, but it's not like that for a lot of people.

When I started the plant here, there were people I hired that had NEVER had electricity. I had to sign letters that we would guaranty payment to get it turned on.

Oh sorry, I misunderstood, I thought you were referring to the OP, a westerner.

I know many poor Thai's, very sad.

Then I imagine we are in agreement. With few exceptions, anyone from the US that ends up old and broke, made poor decisions along the way.

You think social workers and home helps don't get paid?

I haven't experienced this at all and don't get the impression people are more selfish today than 10,20,50 years ago.  Some as they get older may be inclined to see the worst aspects of society.

Loneliness is overrated.

People are wayyy too codependent.

You born alone you die alone.

Suck it up buttercups. 👍

That's dreadful.

Too may people make the mistake of thinking blood = I got your back.

More like knife in the back for many.

He'd need a chest to pin it on first.

No hand outs from the Gov, that is why the familys are so strong in their support for each other. The familys support the old and the old support the familys with child care

You are a wealthy man in ways money can't buy.

What about the farang elderly in Pattaya who have no one and are forced to live in low rental dumps ?

Many are lonely unless they wish to buy permanent company like many of you do handing thousands to a Thai partner to "love " you

This time last year I ended up in ICCU after a heart attack, visitors only allowed at 6 pm for 1 hour, one night 4 poo ying turn up to see me, then one friend in BKK her husband went to China town and bought all this Chinese medicine and shipped it down to Phuket all bottled and ready to drink they wouldn't accept any money from me,
