Thai credit card

Firstly they are not useless, I get airline milage and a percent cash back from the Thai card.

Yes just keep paying the extra charges on your American credit card to use it here, makes perfect sense.

Why post if you are clueless?

I have 8 American credit cards that charge no foreign transaction fees.

  • Thai credit card rewards seem useless to me so i’m not sad i can’t get one.   by contrast my American ones are amazing

  • I'm not sure, perhaps others can correct me if wrong, but I thought that for foreigners to have a credit card here, they need to keep sufficient funds in an account to cover the card limit.

Completely off topic but reminds me of the scene In a James Bond film set in Thailand where the American sheriff on holiday opens a cantilevered wallet with about 20 cards......

Curious why you would need as many as 8 cards.....?

In the UK, unless it is some super duper exclusive credit card, there is no annual fee. Is it normal for a Thai credit card to charge an annual fee and how much is it usually?

The age limit (15–75 years) on the Krungthai Ultra Care Debit Card does not come from the bank itself — it comes from the insurance company’s policy rules, which the bank must follow when bundling the insurance.

Hope this helps.

I don’t have 8 cards, I have about 25 cards. Only 8 of them have no foreign transaction fees.

I sign up for cards, use them for mandatory expenses like paying taxes, and the credit card companies give me sign up bonuses. Then I get another card and do the same thing, while keeping the old card but not charging anything on it.

Oddly enough that boosts my credit score, even though the banks make nothing from me. So they offer me even better cards.

Eventually after a few years with no charges, the bank cancels the cards but that doesn’t matter because I have a couple mainstay cards with no fees that I use for booking hotels and such. Those are my oldest accounts. I let the new ones expire, but keep the old ones so my average age of accounts keeps getting older. That also keeps my score high.

I have no intention of getting a credit card. I just want to know why the gf thinks that I will fall for her claiming her annual fee is 6000 baht.

Seems like understanding credit cards in Thailand is least of your worries.

Why do you say that. Of course it wasn't 6000 baht annual fee. Did you seriously think that I thought it was. But as it is Thailand I will never know what the 6000 baht was for. But it would be handy to know what the typical annual fee is for next year, if there is a next year. Knock a nought off that 6000 and I guess that would be nearer the actual fee.

That's only for those (not just foreigners) who cannot meet the normal  financial/credit history/work permit requirements.   Those who can meet the banks requirements do not have to provide security funds.

Let me re-phrase the question. When a """THAI""" person gets a credit card how much is the annual fee. That is a """THAI""" person. For the record I have absolutely no intention of getting a Thai credit card. Repeat """""I""""" am not getting a Thai credit card.

Something wrong with your keyboard?

That depends on the card, some are low, some are higher.

My card's annual fee is 5000 THB

So this could actually be the fee.

Ask to see the statement where it outlines the fee, or ask for the name of the card and check on their site.

SCB (CardX) charges 1,200 baht per year for their silver card, but waives the annual fee for the next year if spending exceeds 30,000 baht during the year.

I have an scb cardex platinum card. If you spend 100,000 a year there is no charge. If not it is 400Thb per year charge, although I always phone them up and complain and they waive the charge.

Credit card is a misnomer in Thailand, as with SCB you have to deposit B100,000 in an account as security, which you can't touch, in order to get B50,000 "credit" limit.

My comment was correct on both points.

No fee for Krungsri CC, except maybe 100 baht or so for a new card.

It is Homepro linked so the give a discount on what you spend, handy when we fitted out the house

Good for car hire and hotel deposits.

My experience is like the majority of others as well

ALL of my cards (2 from BBL, 1 from KBank and 1 from SCB) have a fixed annual fee.. From memory, it’s around 2k to 4k depending on the card and it’s “features”

That said, like the others, I’ve never actually paid that fee - but rather was exempted yearly based on the amount of spend I put on the card.. My BBL cards are the lowest I recall with only few thousands or X transactions. The others are a bit higher - but easily met with just my traditional spend.

IF the claim is 6,000 for the annual fee - IMHO - that would perhaps be for TWO cards from the same bank (I applied for and was approved for my 2 BBL cards at the same time) OR a card from the issuers “premium” line which carries higher perks, but also higher fees or minimums spend for a fee waiver.

Whenever my credit card company wants to charge me a fee, I call them and tell them I want to stop the card and return it.

You will be surprised how fast they say the fee can be waived.

My SCB credit card is unsecured.

I have 3 Credit Cards from Bangkok Bank. I have them over 10 years now and deposited 200K up front to get them.

I have a Thai Air Asia Card which gives me priority in checking in and boarding.

have to check my monthly statements and if there is a charge I get my Thai Partner to call them and they waiver the charge.

I get cash back for spending large amounts.

So far so good.

I have a credit card from Bangkok Bank. Had it for 9 nine years now. And to answer the original question they doesn't charge any thing unless you use it regularly.

They charge you for using the card? That sounds odd.

There is often a yearly fee, which is waived when you spend over xx per year.

Or are you talking about interest?

No it's not.

I have a Thai credit card which has no deposit on it. and looking at the replies, so do many others.

Although when I was looking for one years ago, the standard answer i seemed to get from most banks was I needed to deposit the amount i wanted credit for. Even with Work permit, Visa and years of payslips.

I had to shop around a bit to find a proper credit card without deposit.

RIGHT !!!

To get my 1st BBL Credit Card I had to put a deposit, because I didn't have a job inThailand (based in Shenzhen PRC).

BUT

BBL issued me an unsecured credit card as soon as I had evidence of a solid job in Thailand.

To summarize the rules in Thailand  (which are BTW the same everywhere else):

No job in Thailand, no money in Thailand: no credit card

No job in Thailand, money in Thailand: credit card with deposit

Job in Thailand: credit card without deposit

if you're putting down a deposit then it's not a credit card, the clue is in the name...

It's a secured credit card - the clue is in the name.
