Thai girls/blokes who don't like Farangs speaking Thai.

Featured Replies

Have you ever come across these wenches? The ones who usually work in bars in tourist heavy areas and are nice as pie when they think they have a fresh fish in their net, and as soon you speak Thai they turn from the princess bride into the wicked witch of the west.

Why is it this way? Thailand seems to be the only country in the world where speaking the local lingo as a foreigner is widely discouraged.

No, bob, has never happened to me because I leave all the wenches, slappers, haggard bar-tarts and minging sluts for you. For me it's only the 5-Star hi-so babes 24/7. Sit back and watch how it's done, mate.

Delusions of the highest order. Never happens when your Thai is fluent. This only happens when someone's Thai is so poor that they can't be understood by the locals such that the locals switch to English out of pure necessity.

Don't call me mate, and last I saw you were haggling the price down with a LB on soi 6.

cheapskate, she only wanted 500 baht for LT!

Actually mate is too good for you...idiot is probably better, only because we can't get rude on this forum.

I have a cunning plan.....don't speak the local lingo.......and anyway....I imagine most speak "Isaan Thai" and Laos.....rather than Thai.

The reason many Thais become cautious when you speak Thai okay is because it infers that  you know the game, have been here a while, and might rumble their BS... that's why they don't like it, as you might expose the fakeness of them and they will lose face.

Sounds to me like bob has been having his rent a wreck teach him Thai. Gets all the good slang words, and low class sayings. That does get the locals talking.

Not unless you only hang around bar girls. The other 70 million are happy to see a foreigner have a go at communication.

The ones who don't like farangs who speak Thai are the ones who are tryng to put something over on you.

Just as anybody who will ask the usual "how long you stay Thailand ?"...

Even if it's your first time, make it a point to say you have been around for at least 4 or 5 years.

Most ask, because they want to know upto what level are you the falang aware on the prices in the area and if there is a any opening to cheat or scam the newly arrived foreigner.

And afterwards they cannot understand why tourists and retirees prefer to go to Cambodia, Vietnam or Laos...or elsewhere in Asia.

So many assumptions and you probably only hang out in tourist areas... not to mention probably have a superiority complex too.

Wrong on both accounts.

Not speaking Thai helps the Thais and motivates them to learn english. This will help them much more in life then any pot bellied bald falang negotiating the Quickie in Thai. 🤣

Besides with the current Ai developpments, in a few years (and even now), it will be possible to have a totally fluid conversation in any foreign language with the appropriate tools in ear and at hand.

Many many years ago, I went with bar girls, some times travelling with them in Thailand

at this period I was interested in Thai language and I can tell you that my biggest teachers were bar girls and they were happy to speak with me in Thai

now I don't go with bargirls, I can speak and read Thai ( not fluent ) and because here it's upcountry, Thai people are delighted to speak Thai with me

Same reason they ask you: "How many times have you come to Thailand?" - As soon as they think that you know the language, tricks, and prices, they become less interested in you.

It was once different, but that was like 15-20 years ago...

There are, of course, people who don't like foreigners who speak Thai for dubious reasons, as already outlined by other posters in this thread.

There is, however, a much simpler in most cases: most foreigners (certainly Westerners) speak truly awful Thai. Yes thier wives and friends can probably understand them because they're used to the strange mannerisms and quirks of the speaker, having spent lots of time with them. However, whether it's a bar girl, tuk tuk driver, home-pro attendant or whatever.... If they can speak basic English it's probably just far, far easier for them to try and converse in English rather than struggle to understand the customer's Thai language skills.

If you are constantly coming across people who "don't like farrang who speak Thai" then you are probably either hanging around with the wrong type of people, or your Thai skills aren't quite as good as you think.

Sometimes I tell them I just arrived in Thailand last night and have no idea where to go or what to do. The attempts at manipulation begin and I find that entertaining.

Yes, I consider myself superior to anyone that left school before age 12.

Thailand has a big pride aspect those other countries don't have. A lot of "this and that is only for Thai's" type stuff. That includes fluent language and a lot of other things. Anything done "too well Thai" by a foreigner would be offputting.

Sitting on a barstool is very much allowed though (as long as you just sit there and let stuff be served to you and don't get up much).
