Here's a medical ethics question.

Apparently, it will be possible to prevent down syndrome babies from ever happening with gene editing.

Objectively down's syndrome is a defect, but on the other hand people with down's syndrome are quite often the sweetest and most lovable people you'll ever meet.

I suppose on a family level, almost all parents would avoid it if given a choice.

But the larger question is should it be prevented completely society-wide?

Then there is the where does it go next question?

Prevent all left-handed people?

Prevent all red heads?

Prevent gay kids if that will be possible?

Why would anyone know? But we are there and can either take abortion, or maybe gene modify babies, and Im happy Im not the one who ever have to make that choice, neither my wife. Unbearable choice and choices.

Rather prevention.

I've heard this is becoming quite feasible.

Another issue -- as such gene editing spreads and most parents choose to use it, the down's syndrome kids that are born will be even more of a minority group with much less of a support infrastructure.

Well abortion is part of the choices, so maybe it would or will be easier decision to gene modify if there is an option. I think nobody wants a baby with Downs if they can avoid it, and you cant really know if they will be left handed, red head or gay, so that is far out there in comparison to Down syndrome. 

 

What makes some turn gay or straight is sometimes just by choice for some I guess because they can fall in love with both and chooses to be one or the other way,

I think there are many traits that can be edited.

I think the science isn't fully there yet on the nature/nurture question about homosexuality. Most likely usually a mix. 

We're still looking for the gay gene. Gays always telling us born slippy. It's really just a sexual fetish. We can gene edit that too huh?!

Obviously some is born with hormone «imbalance» which can form the brain in younger ages to feel and be something different.

Down syndrome is a genetic defect and if it can be repaired in utero, obviously it should.

 

Left handedness and hair colour are not defects. Nor is homosexuality, since homosexuality is based on nuturing not genetics

I guess what the OP is talking about is essentually eugenics, which was popular/fashionable in much darker times back in the early-mid 20th century... the trouble back then was how they figured on achieving it. Now that it is actually possible to do effectively without just killing everyone who doesn't meet the requirements, then sure, it's now a real medical ethics dilema.

However, I think it is only a matter of time as generations die, along with their values, and new ones are born, social attitudes and norms shift... leading eventually to gene-editing services at hospitals for how you want your kid to look and be guaranteed to be healthy. On top of this, the now normalized "Me/My life/Why shouldn't I have what I want" etc. attitude in society will help push this shopping list approach along to how you want your kids to be like... imperfections will naturally be weeded out eventually.

Sorry I did a fact check on my ignorant answer, but I miss to see your point why you want to fix something we do not know exactly how it is caused. People have different qualities and thank god not everyone is like you only 😉 what a boring life it would had been

Agree about left-handedness and red hair, but homosexuality due to nurture??? Obviously it can be encouraged by those who want the kid to be gay, but the spark must be there in the first place.

Does anyone know a left-handed, red-haired gay, male or female?

In that case, is it ethical to give children The Polio vaccine?

 

As the people with The Polio die off, the medical device companies will have to lay off employees.

 

Kids with The Polio are really well behaved and almost never get in trouble with the police.

 

Even as adults they're sweet.  I can't remember the last time I read about an adult with The Polio being arrested for shoplifting and then running from the police.

There are going to be a lot of options with AI.

On the other hand things like autism need to be studied a lot more,i know a few people with autism and they

all have some kind of gift.

Of course not all do .

A lot of these "birth defects" can be prevented bu having the parents screened for certain diseases to eliminate the chance of a defect.

This is being done on large scale with all kinds of animals already. not saying it should be done with people 

because that is a whole new can of worms.

Being left-handed myself, I I understand that left-handers are more intelligent than right-handed people.  In that case, perhaps we should stop righthanded people reproducing?

 

With any other organism, Natural Selection (Survival of the Fitness) means that only the strongest and healthiest of that species survives.  Humans encourage the mentally and physically-disabled, such as paraplegics and Down's kids. Should we not encourage ony healthy people to reproduce?  (I'm playing Devil's Advocate here).

When I think of left-handed musicians there's Jimi Hendrix, Albert King, Tony Iommi, Paul McCartney...

 

But when it comes to red haired musicians all I get is Ed Sheeran, Mick Hucknall and Wee Jimmy Krankie.

being an left handed myself, I understand left handed becomes more intelligent because they lives in an right handed world and that’s what stimulates intelligence to find solutions to cope with a right handed world. I might fact check that myth or statement I read decades ago
