Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul will travel briefly to Kuala Lumpur, flying out on the evening of the 25 October 2025 to sign a Thai-Cambodian peace agreement, despite cancelling his full attendance at the 47th ASEAN Summit due to national mourning for Her Majesty Queen Sirikit. The signing ceremony on the morning of 26 October, is to be witnessed by U.S. President Donald Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. Anutin has requested a shortened ceremony to return in time for a royal event on the same day.

Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow will represent Thailand at the remaining ASEAN Summit meetings from 25–28 October. Anutin reassured the public that all relevant Thai agencies, including Defence, Foreign and Interior ministries, have been engaged in negotiations with Cambodia through the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) and General Border Committee (GBC).

The agreement includes conditions that Cambodia must implement to remove any perceived threats to Thai national security. Anutin emphasised that the pact will not compromise Thailand’s sovereignty or national interests.

Regarding the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in South Korea from 29 October to 1 November 2025, Anutin stated that he intends to remain in Thailand unless critical bilateral issues require his presence. In that case, the Foreign Minister will attend on his behalf.

Key Takeaways

• PM Anutin will make a brief trip to Kuala Lumpur to sign the Thai-Cambodian peace agreement.

• The ceremony will be witnessed by U.S. President Trump and Malaysian PM Anwar Ibrahim.

• Anutin confirmed the agreement will not threaten Thailand’s sovereignty or national security.

UPDATE
Thailand and Cambodia Sign Landmark Peace Deal in Kuala Lumpur

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul signed a formal peace agreement with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet around noon, in Kuala Lumpur on 26 October 2025. The accord was witnessed and also signed by US President Donald Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who is the current ASEAN Chair. Anutin described the agreement as a first step in restoring bilateral relations between the two countries.

The agreement comes after years of tension between Thailand and Cambodia over border disputes and diplomatic disagreements. Previous attempts to ease relations have included bilateral talks and regional mediation efforts, but a comprehensive framework for cooperation had not been formalised until this signing. The Kuala Lumpur setting reflects Malaysia’s role as a neutral venue and ASEAN’s broader interest in regional stability.

In his statement, Anutin said the deal “will begin the process of mending our ties” and expressed hope that both nations would adhere to the agreement fully and in good faith. Analysts note that the involvement of prominent international figures, such as US President Trump and PM Anwar, adds weight to the accord and signals wider international interest in maintaining stability in Southeast Asia.

Experts suggest that the deal could pave the way for enhanced cooperation in trade, security, and border management. Observers emphasised that implementation will require continued monitoring and goodwill on both sides to avoid setbacks. The agreement also demonstrates ASEAN’s capacity to facilitate peaceful resolution of bilateral conflicts within the region.

Not so sure, looks about right for him  😎

"After the ceremony, Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow refused to call it a peace agreement - sticking instead to their own preferred title "Joint Declaration by the prime ministers of Thailand and Cambodia on the outcomes of their meeting in Kuala Lumpur", which doesn't exactly trip off the tongue."

A good quote, from the BBC's Johnathen Head he writes a good piece, in a nutshell a PR job for Trump, he was only in KL for 24 hours before moving on.

I'd wager my left nut Trump tied any trade deal with Thailand and Cambodia to him being present at the signing ceremony he's that desperate for a Nobel Peace Prize.
