A New Zealand tourist was discovered dead in her hotel room near Kata Beach, prompting local police to investigate the circumstances of her death. Officers received a call around 2:45 pm after hotel staff found the woman unresponsive. Police Lieutenant Phirawat Yodtor confirmed that forensic experts and a doctor were dispatched to the scene.

The 47-year-old woman showed no signs of struggle or injury, but prescription medications, such as antidepressants, were found, along with three opened cans of alcohol and two cocktail glasses. Initial forensic reports suggest a possible drug-alcohol interaction leading to respiratory failure. The body was likely deceased for eight to 10 hours before discovery, placing her death between 6:30 am and 8:30 am.

The woman’s friend, a 49-year-old German man, alerted hotel staff after attempting to wake her, reporting she was not breathing. Despite CPR and emergency medical efforts, she could not be revived. The man, who had been drinking with her at a bar in Kata before both returned to the hotel around 1 am, provided a statement to police and was tested for drugs and examined physically, with both tests proving negative.

Police reviewed CCTV footage and hotel records, which aligned with the man's statement, showing the couple returned together and that no one else entered the room overnight. Bar staff corroborated that there were no disputes or unusual behavior observed prior to their return to the hotel.

The police photographed the scene and collected evidence, including a room layout diagram, whilst the deceased's body was sent to Vachira Phuket Hospital for an autopsy to affirm the cause of death. Karon Police have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.

Key Takeaways

  • A tourist from New Zealand was found dead with no signs of struggle.
  • Initial reports suggest a drug-alcohol interaction causing respiratory failure.
  • Investigations continue as police corroborate eyewitness accounts and examine evidence.

Read paragraph 3 again

Timeline seems kind of weird if they both returned to the hotel at 1:00 am.  She died around 7am.  He reported it to the hotel around 2:30 pm.

I guess they could of stayed up all night and fell asleep in the morning and he didn't wake up until the afternoon.

Another tourist consuming large amounts of alcohol and combining it with drugs in a hot climate that they are not used to. The dehydration, alcohol and drugs isn't good for you.

You are trying to imply that it was Thailands fault.

Sounds like she was on barbituates and mixed them with booze.  Hopefully someone back home is feeding her cats.
