My Bangkok Bank experience today 11/6

I was out buying a few things using my mobile app as I have without an issue for quite a while now. I made a purchase and I guess I forgot to log out of the app once the purchase was approved. Put the phone back in my pocket headed home got home pulled the phone out and on the screen it said my mobile web pin number had been locked.

I am guessing it bounced around in my pocket when I still have the app open which caused it to send bad information so they locked the app. They offer a way to unlock it without going to the bank but it didn't work for me. So on a motorbike taxi I went and I'm guessing that all the Frozen accounts and all the issues that have been had recently must be either finished or almost finished because when I walked into the bank at 1:30 p.m. this afternoon there were no customers zero at any of the desks or waiting to be waited on.

They ushered me over to a desk I sat down and then I realized oh no I forgot my bank book I had my ATM card my phone with the app and my passport but no Bank book and most of the time you can't get anything done without having the bank book. I told the girl I was dealing with what I needed done the first thing she asked me for was my bank book. I explained to her I just didn't have it but I had my passport by ATM card and I was hoping that would be enough she said she was sorry but they really did need the bank book.

Not her fault I got up took a few steps and ran into the lady that I've been dealing with her at least 15 years in that same branch we traded pleasantries she asked if everything was okay I explained to her what I needed and she said follow me we went over to her desk gave her my passport ATM card and my phone we went over to the ATM machine she put a bunch of things in it don't know what she did didn't really pay attention I had to acknowledge it then back to her desk.

Then she had me log on again and put in my PIN number thankfully I could use the same pin number didn't want to change it. Lo and behold mobile app back to working pin number unlocked. She explained to me the technically they do need the bank book but she said if you opened your account in this branch which I did then they can get around that and the girl that waited on me was fairly new and she just followed procedure.

I know Bangkok Bank has gotten a lot of flack recently but it looks like things have started to slow down regarding the Frozen accounts and such. I like Bangkok Bank it's easy for me to say because the account freezing had nothing to do with me didn't bother my accounts I could see where it would be frustrating but I've had my account for about 26 years and I just haven't had an issue that I didn't cause myself

Good to read. I've banked with Bangkok Bank since arriving in Thailand 20 years ago and have never had any serious issues with service.

Agreed.  31 years and no problems with my accounts.

Same. My only gripe is having to wait 7 working days for a 12 month bank statement (for my extension of stay based on monthly income).

AFAIK other banks can print a statement while you wait.

I was told by a friend that there is a place on the app you can download this PDF of the statement that they send to you right away. In his case he did and he used it at the jomtien immigration office for his extension without a problem. But there were reports that others downloaded it to use it for their extension and was told it wasn't acceptable because it didn't have the bank stamp on it. So as with everything here your mileage may vary

That's what I would have expected.

One more reason to lock your phone with a pincode or another safety method. And always pay attention that the screen is dark when putting it in your pocket.

you can get a six month on the spot, so do one at six months and then one at twelve months.

Whilst Rayong accepts this, not all other offices do, though. I recall @billd766 mentioning on here some time ago that his office insisted on 12-month BBL statements, for instance. Likewise @chickenslegs might wish to check the position with his office if he hasn't already done so.

Exactly same thing happened to me in Chiang Mai.

The Immigration Rules do say that the statement should be no more than 7 days old. So the first one you get, at months 1 - 6, are not officially valid.

But I did it last year, and it was accepted by my IO.

I was told at CW that you can not use this method, must be a year statement no older than 7 days, unless things have changed recently

I have been doing it this way in Rayong with no problem, will be going the first week in December will find out then if I am good or not. Will be doing it two weeks early so have plenty of time to get a 12 month statement if required.

I was told same so I went to app and requested 1 year statement. It arrived by email very quickly. I printed out the 19 pages and went to the bank to obtain the third required bank document by Chiang Mai Immigration (copies of each page of bank books, 1 year statement and "special" letter showing monthly transfers into Thailand). Then went to agent (my choice so don't ask why I use an agent). They then told me the  1 year statement would not be accepted by immigration unless every page stamped and signed by the bank and said many banks would not do, or original statement from head office. So back to the bank and ordered 1 year statement. A week later arrived but special letter only had 7 days validity so had to get new one. Great, back to agent. They checked everything. The statement had one transfer shown which was used for last years renewal so they said immigration would want to see that on the special letter even thought it was for last extension. Back to bank again to get the third special letter. Back to agent and submit. All accepted and extension renewed that week.

I just did my extension in Chiang Mai, yesterday and used the account statement overview from the app (Bangkok Bank), which I did once in May (for Oct-Apr) and another one a day before going for the extension for May-November and this was accepted. It is the bank letter, just with your current balance, that can't be older than 7 days.

If you are using the Bangkok Bank App you can request up to a 12-month statement to be emailed to you the same day, but it appears to only allow you months within the current year of request. Also, I'm not sure if Immigration will accept those email statements since they can't be stamped and signed off on according to my branch teller in Foreign Services.

I requested from November last year to October this year and received it ok but visa agent said Chiang Mai immigration would not accept it unless the bank stamped and signed each page of the statement which in my case was 19 pages.

Curious. For the years where they stopped issuing visa or Mastercards and only let people have chinese union pay based cards how did you pay for things at the many places union pay was not accepted? Maybe your good card was valid throughout this period and you avoided the debacle?

That was a good account of the bank, I have used them for 25 years with no problem.

It is like anything else, no one reports the fact they had a good experience with the bank,  your are the the first it seems to make a positive comment, we only ever hear about when it goes wrong on blogs such as this which unfortunately paints the bank in an undeserved negative way.

At least you said it was your own mistake and did not try and blame the bank as many others do. 👍

Plus it was a good indirect test, you know your mobile BKK banking app is safe if anyone ever tries to unlock it by guessing at the password.

I print out my bank statements which are emails sent to me from BKK bank via the app, they have the Banks logo etc.

I have used them for the last three years for non -O visa extensions (800k bank deposits) at Phuket Immigration for those of you who live here.

Yes, always exit the banking app by swiping the screen from bottom to the top and then press the side button to lock the app (iPhone).

That means two pins are needed, one to open the phone and another to open the bank app, that way it will be impossible to break by others.

And this shows just some of the differences between immigration offices.

A bank statement's validity depends on its purpose, with some applications requiring a statement to be no more than a few days or weeks old, while others allow for statements up to a year old. For financial applications like loans, it's often good to keep them for about a year to track spending, but for official documents like visa applications, a more recent statement (like 28 or 31 days old) is usually needed.

Correct, and it makes no sense that the bank would not sign all 19 pages, unless of course they could charge you for it, and the employees just don't want to be bothered with you in the first place. The strangest thing is the language in Thai at the bottom of your statement. The last sentence states that "This document is computer generated and is considered valid without a signature". Would you like to bet that no bank employee has taken the time to read that, nor has Immigration. Can you imagine this....the bank says the statement is valid for any purpose, and Immigration refuses to accept that statement from Bangkok Bank. It's ridiculous!

I have noticed also some info I have needed in previous applications with the same office is not needed the next time I go such as a copy of the ownership documents of the house from my Thai parent as she bought the house.

So I still take them each time as the rules as subject to change without notice.

But normally it takes half an hours to check the documents by the IO for the annual visa extension and then the passport it picked up the next day including the multiple re entry visa.

This extra, internal service costs 700 baht, no receipt. 😀

I can see why this is the case.

It is easy these days to make your own statements via an app, they can look genuine but are not, that is why the bank clerk will not sign them nor some IO accepting them, but as I stated in an earlier message they accept my printed out statements at the Phuket immigration office.
