SIM card compatibility with foreign phones.

Featured Replies

Bad title heading.

So here is a "warning" of sorts.

Last Friday landed in Australia.

My usual plan is go straight to Optus shop at airport buy a 30 day sim.

Lady at Optus shop: "as of last October the sim  cards they provide are not compatible with some phones "

Notable exceptions are iphone + samsung.

My phone was a newish infinix note pro.

Anyway this has caused so much concern.

Typing this in Oz using WiFi.

Anyway just a heads up.

Maybe something to do with this.

Probably this is to do with the following, from the Optus website......

Optus (and other Australian telecommunication providers) is legally required to block access to devices that are not able to make emergency calls to Triple Zero (000) using VoLTE. Check if your phone is compatible using our Device Checker tool, by entering the first 8 digits of your device's IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number. Find your device's IMEI number by dialling *#06#. If your device is not compatible, you will need a new compatible device to stay connected

Thanks guys. I didn't expect a solution but good to know the reason.

Caught me completely off guard and as one can imagine threw huge spanner in the works.

Unrelated side issue... So after getting the hire car and off to a cafe strip to communicate with people I was meeting.. In a small strip of approx 8 cafes only ONE had WiFi and even then they had to search for password.

So travellers be aware.

The two options suggested was 1. Buy a pocket WiFi ($99aud)

Or borrow a friends spare phone and buy Sim card

Did you check the your phones IMEI using their device checker tool? (https://www.optus.com.au/support/checkdevice)  I just checked my Redmi Note 13 and.......

(p.s. I did check a couple of Infinix models and unfortunately they were both blocked)

@Upnotover yes indeed, I used the link you provided.

And this message appeared.

Folk need to be aware.

Sounds minor inconvenience however it's not

Edit: I also went to Telstra etc.

Got the same NO.

Unfortunately, based on the number your entered, the INFINIX NOTE 40 PRO+ 5G device is blocked from accessing the Optus mobile network to comply with Australian legislation around mobile safety requirements.
