Pattaya’s High Season Hit by Outdated Bars, Booze Rules

As Pattaya enters its peak tourist season, visitors are greeted with the familiar frustration of stagnant business offerings. Despite a rise in tourist numbers and increased hotel occupancy, many massage shops, beer bars, and nightlife venues struggle to keep up due to outdated practices and confusing regulations.

Tourism demand is strong, with long-term visitors and Western tourists significantly contributing to the local economy. However, venues often remain stuck in the aesthetics and layouts of the 1990s, offering decor that fails to impress international visitors. Additionally, prices have risen to reflect 2025 standards, leading to customer dissatisfaction when service and ambiance do not match these costs.

One significant issue is the ongoing confusion surrounding Thailand's alcohol laws. Frequent changes and unclear announcements regarding sales restrictions leave businesses and customers in a constant state of uncertainty. This unpredictability hinders efficient operation and leaves patrons discouraged from paying premium prices.

The Thai government bears much of the responsibility for the current predicament, with ineffective policy management and poorly communicated regulations creating an unfavorable business environment. While business owners are at fault for not modernizing, the inconsistencies in government policy significantly hinder progress and innovation in the city’s nightlife sector, reported the Pattaya Mail.

To ensure future success, Pattaya must see an overhaul in both venue quality and regulatory framework. Businesses need to be incentivized to update and offer better experiences, while the government must clarify and stabilize regulations to restore confidence and encourage investment. Without these changes, the city risks ongoing customer dissatisfaction and a perpetuation of existing challenges.

Key Takeaways

  • Pattaya struggles with outdated nightlife offerings despite strong tourism.
  • Confusing alcohol laws create uncertainty for businesses and customers.
  • Government and business updates are essential for future success.

I'm guessing it won't be enforced in Pattaya unless the cops are short of cash

Pattaya does look a bit dated, I do agree. Even Central looks tatty and old by comparison to the shiny jewel that is Central in CM.

Everything in Thailand seems outdated, as you almost never see an investment or renovation.. some restaurants and shops never did anything and still look as 50 yrs ago, but the same with rules and regulations, the conservative attitude of the elite, government and army, and low profits as there are too many same kind of businesses everywhere so nobody can earn a decent living

There is absolutelty no reason now or before for the 2-5 pm law that holds any rational scrutiny. As for this latest round of insanity who are the faces behind it?  Who's pushing this insanity? People are not allowed to have even a sip of alcohol from one second past 2 pm til five pm and one second after midnight til 11:00 am. This is a policy thought up by absolute imbeciles.

It’s not about alcohol itself. It’s about control of society — to display the control you have over it, to self-check that control, and to demonstrate it to other powers.

With frequent military coups, jailing former prime ministers, etc., you can’t expect that the next entity that comes to power will just lift all the bans.

Quite the opposite — by tightening and relaxing the grip on something like drinking hours, and then enforcing it, you easily establish yourself as being in control of society, self-check your control, and show it to others. The fact that it’s about alcohol doesn’t really matter.

Approximately 3 decades of servicing tens of thousands of men from around the globe.

Now around 50 years old with worn out genitals they will find an elderly farang to marry.

They are masters of their art.

A seaside resort that won't let you have a cold one in the sun, in a deck chair, at 3pm to stem the 35 degC heat? You could hardly believe it compared to Pattaya some twenty years ago. Progress?

A close friend of mine who visits Pattaya annually told me that on his recent visit prices had doubled from the previous year, when it comes to pay for play, and everything was overpriced. In addition to that even more disappointing was the fact that the women were fatter and uglier and it was increasingly more difficult to find attractive young women at a price that made any sense at all.

It seems like in general Go-Go bars, and bars are having a harder time attracting good looking younger women than ever before, as they have too many online options to make really good money.

This seems to apply especially to Phuket, Ko Samui and Pattaya.

Papaya is very outdated.  The powers to be need tear down all the bars and shops on beach road and modernize the beach front.

Where all the young one gone?

long time passing,

where have the fresh one gone? long time ago,

Where have all the pretty one gone?
Young men have picked them, every one
Oh, when will they ever come back?
Oh, when will they ever come back?

Gone for husbands, every one...

No, they just want to fine him, and pocket the money! Its likely not a criminal offence.

Pattaya, Phuket and Samui all need re-modelling.

Nothings changed in the last 20+ years and it's looking tired,

In reality everything has changed in the past 20 years, and all the appeal, most all the funk, all the charm, and all the beauty seems to have gone away from those 3 spots.

I lived on Samui for a decade and left 10 years ago, and all the mom and pop places had disappeared, and were substituted by higher priced operations that had very little charm and personality. Bland, vanilla, and pretending to be classy. Yikes.

Meanwhile the island remained utterly filthy, the beaches congested with debris and litter, and the useless local government refused to spend even tiny amounts of money on cleanup efforts, even though they were collecting billions upon billions.

Such charity. Such a kind hearted remark. You must be quite a prize.

Instead of fixating on booze, women and drugs, these tourists would do well to take a leaf out of the locals book. Stop letting substance abuse dictate your holidays. There are many many wonderful temples that they could practice "merit making" instead of constantly chasing sins! Temperance, moderation, good will to all men, enjoy the spiritual side of Thailand at least until 7.11 starts flogging booze at 5pm.

The sky is falling ...the sky is falling.

Dollars to donuts the proposed alcohol fines never happen along with all sorts of other changes that are proposed and discussed and then just fade away.  I think some good advice is not get too worried or worked up over any proposed changes until if and when it actually happens and even then if and when anyone ever actually enforces and if and when it actually impacts your own life.

Personally I sort of like the fact that there are still lots of "old fashioned" bars and restaurants and hotels in Thailand.  Change it all to slick a/c places with fancy looks catering to two week millionaires and watch the prices soar.

Take a look at soi 11 in Bangkok or how Singapore has changed to an upscale overpriced place and ask is that what you really want all over Thailand?

No thanks.

Oh I don’t know. There are a lot more cars and buildings in Phuket. It’s not change for the better, but it IS change.

The last thing this forum needs is more preaching, if you want to improve your own life go for it. It would be highly welcome, we have zero power to change the behavior of others.

Not all tourists are alcoholics and Ill guess most non-alcoholic e.g. Arab tourist spends a tad more than most beer drinkers

Singapore has been fabulously overpriced for decades now, so you might be referring to the 50s or '60s, but I can't remember a time when it wasn't overpriced.
