A primary school teacher in Kanchanaburi has been removed from all teaching duties after allegedly striking a Prathom 4 student more than 20 times for failing to answer a mathematics question. The decision followed a one-hour closed-door meeting on 17 November between school officials, district authorities and more than 20 concerned parents. The outcome left the parents satisfied, as the teacher was immediately reassigned to non-teaching duties while disciplinary measures are reviewed.

The case began when a parent reported that the teacher had used a wooden stick to hit their child, leaving a large wound. Another student was allegedly punished for wearing earrings, with the teacher forcefully removing them and causing an infected injury. Parents later learned that over ten other students had also been subjected to excessive punishment.

On 17 November, parents gathered at the school in Tha Maka district to demand action. Present at the meeting were Suriya Thongbunma, Director of the Kanchanaburi Primary Educational Service Area Office 2, the school director, officers from the provincial Social Development and Human Security Office, district administrative officials and local police. Media were not allowed inside during the discussions.

After reviewing the situation, the education office instructed the school director to submit a full written report detailing the incidents. It also ordered the teacher in question to cease all involvement in teaching or classroom activities. Officials stated that disciplinary action would be considered after further consultation, while emphasising that parents could file criminal complaints individually if they wished.

Parents expressed relief at the outcome, saying it aligned with their priority of ensuring student safety. School representatives advised them to lodge police reports, while the district office committed to investigating the teacher under civil-service disciplinary rules. Parents also requested that the education office create a LINE group so they could monitor progress and receive updates on the disciplinary process.

The Daily News reported that a parent representative noted satisfaction that the new school director acted decisively and resolved the immediate issue. Parents also welcomed the teacher’s removal from the school environment pending further action. The education office will now examine the facts and determine appropriate disciplinary measures in the coming period.

Key Takeaways

• Parents reported that a teacher had excessively punished students, including hitting one child over 20 times.

• Officials removed the teacher from all teaching responsibilities pending disciplinary review.

• Parents may pursue criminal charges individually while the education office continues its investigation.

Yeah... I still do not understand why when there is proof of something like this. Police do not take the initiative to arrest the person. The school (to save face for it happening in their school) should be filing their own criminal case against the teacher for his abuse.

Yet, the teacher may only now face his teaching credentials revoked or at the least, move to another school to continue his abuse.

Some of the teachers here are just nut jobs.

And why does the gender matter ?

I never suggested it did. The article in the OP doesn't refer to gender, but another member responded, using male pronouns and I wondered if that came from other news sources.

In a recent similar case in Viet Nam, the teacher's employment was immediately terminated, and consideration is being given to withdrawing their right to teach.  But in Thailand .....

Damn, I misread it, I thought they did the decent thing, until I realized it was RE-Assigned and not RESIGNED.

Probably the kid couldn't answer the question because the teacher sucks at his job, and then takes it out on them. If a teacher ever did such a thing to my kid, they would not need to be disciplined for I would do it myself.

That teacher is very lucky that my children are not in his class. He/She might not have survived it.

....sadistic nut jobs.

My children have been instructed to resist any attempt to discipline them physically at school. This punishment is illegal in Thailand.

I would be straight to the school and the police station if such a thing occurred.

No it doesn't - facing a prison sentence for assaulting children might go someway towards ensuring student safety - but when so many teachers get away with this behavior because it is a social norm - only being 'removed from one specific school' is not a sufficient deterrent.

It needs to be 'normalised' that teachers behaving like this and assaulting children will be punished by the law with criminal charges.
