Brit Stunned at How Much £2.50 Buys in Thailand's 7-Eleven

A British traveller visiting Thailand was astounded by how far his money went at the local 7-Eleven. During his trip, he decided to see what he could buy with £2.50 (approximately 111 Thai baht), and the results left him astonished. Capturing the shopping trip on TikTok, the Brit enthusiastically shared the experience with his 796,000 followers, showing off his four-item haul.

The video begins with the traveller chuckling, revealing each item bought. A vitamin C drink cost him 20 baht, about 47p, while a Sprite was 19 baht, around 46p. For something sweet, he added a tub of Skittles, priced at 25 baht or 59p. To complete his spending, he picked up a Kinder Joy for 33 baht, rounding up the total spend to £2.50.

Users on TikTok were quick to engage, with the video garnering nearly 60,000 likes and numerous comments. Some joked about how costly such an adventure would be in the UK, with one user quipping: “Cost about £20 in the UK.” Another remarked on Thailand's affordability, saying: "Gonna save £100,000 and just go retire in Thailand."

7-Eleven, a globally recognised convenience store chain, had a presence in the UK from 1985 to 1997, operating over 50 stores before being acquired by the UK brand Budgens. Many in the UK experience a sense of nostalgia when discussing 7-Eleven due to this historical connection.

A recent online revelation about the 7-Eleven logo has also intrigued many. Discussions have popped up about the logo’s distinctive style with its uppercase “ELEVE” and lowercase “n.” According to a company spokesperson, this design choice was intentional and thought to be more aesthetically pleasing, reported Mirror, UK.

Great idea, travel all the way to Thailand and buy some Sprite , Skittles and Kinder joy .    Hopefully his next stop will be  Tops supermarket where Western goods are double the back home price

  • Good thing he did not try and buy beer between 2-5 in the afternoon.

  • 7-11 shops should be closed down as a health hazard. So much of their 'food' and drinks are junk food full of chemical additives.

Even more "quality tourists" on their way.

Stupid... He did not buy normal stuff only some drinks and candy...indeed Thailand is cheaper than the UK...but 111THB is a lot for people on a daily wage of 400 THB a day. And he want to save 100k GBP to live im Thailand, but he will soo know that foreigners have different prices than Thai

Assuming they're still using sugar to sweeten those drinks instead of say, sucralose à la Coca-Cola

Wait until he shows them the prices in the Lotus Go Fresh.

Not enough for a large bottle of beer and a packet of cigs though. Mind you about a thousand baht short for a packet of cigs (not black market cigs) in Oz.

Good to see a Brit taking care of his health.

Last time I checked in Europe all these items are actually way cheaper in Europe as well with like 10-20 options. Perhaps the only thing cheaper would be the sprite if comparing it with a to go store on a train station or something. If only they had the same selection groceries in Thailand that the Aldi or Lidl offers it would be heaven. I guess the only thing really cheaper here would be the chicken, pork and fish.

For example a 7x pack Mars chocolate bars costs just 4.49 euro in northern europe at a more expensive grocery store. The same here costs 35 baht each in 7/11. That's nearly 1 euro each VS 0.65 cents there.

When did 7/11's start selling tubs of skittles ?

Reality...

What a contrasting view to some who are living in Thailand!

do you kiss your mother with that mouth?

Ham cheese toasties are lush, even better at 11.01am with an ice-cold Chang.

My sister and her friend were amazed to find dim sum and steamed pork buns for sale at 7-11 for about the same price.  Every time we stopped for gas they would rush in to get some.

Just one more plonker on the internet. :coffee1:

Would he not be even more stunned and astonished if he were to visit MAKRO, for example?

I go to MAKRO, and other similar places, since there....I see real food for sale, and at super low prices.

MAKRO, Lotus and 7/11 are owned by the same company. Some things are the same price.

Italian pasta sauce tins are usually 75 in Lotus. Were 72 in Makro last week, and down to 69 in Lotus. Hmmmmmmm.

Yes.

but send him to the cheese and wine areas.

I'm sure he will have a shock and then run back to the 7/11 for a toasty and a bottle of water. :giggle:

To be clear, I was referring to fresh meat, vegetables, things you might find at MAKRO that Seven does not stock.

My view of Seven is that it is mostly for snacks.

The Lotus-Lek, or whatever you might call it, seems similar to Seven, but has a wider range of good food, like large bags of rice (uncooked), oil, frozen meats, etc.  This is why I prefer to go to the small lotus shops....I think they are the best of this type of store....JMHO

Don't bring my mother into it, she would give you a clip round the ear.

Fields are lush, not ham cheese toasties.

Ham cheese tasties are dripping and sticky, plus you wait a long time for the horizontal toaster to do its stuff.

As for Chang?!  I would prefer a shot of Johnny Walker, but that would be before I started munching 7-11 food.

Are you saying that SMALL bags of uncooked rice are not as GOOD as large bags. 7/11 sells oil as well.

For me, 7/11 is 13km away, small Lotus 21km, and big Lotus and Makro over 30km. Guess where I buy my beer.

Yes, local M&P shop.

Bear in mind that the worker who served him in 7/11 probably earns B350 a shift so his sweets and drinks probably amounted to 1/3 of his/her wage.

I have never noticed the big lower case n in the name. Now I shall always see it.

The worker is paid out of the Profits, not the Takings.

No, I am not saying this.

However, I like to buy 5Kg bags of premium JASMINE rice, which is sold at the small Lotus, and most other stores such as TOPS and MAKRO.

I have yet to see such products at Seven.

You obviously live in a very nice, yet fairly remote, area, with less noise and traffic.

You should appreciate what you have, and stop worrying about where to buy beer.

Beer can be found almost anywhere in Thailand.

Why not we all decide to give a tip of about 100 B every time we do a purchase there?
