How much should a foreigner pay at government hospitals?

Featured Replies

Hope your sitting down.  Both side laparoscopic hernia surgery at Samitjev Sukhumvit Hospital 420,000 baht.  Pacific Cross has been very generous in covering most of the cost.

In 50's and play tennis so figured for best long term results I would seek a top hospital.

Girlfriends sister I think paid 16,000 baht for open hernia surgery in Pak Chong, for both sides. Government Insurance.

Definitely pays to shop around and consider traveling to reputable Government Hospital if finances are restricted.

Too many variables to answer.   Dual pricing at hospitals exists…. & at  some it doesn’t…    The question is impossible to answer - all you can really do is enquire of the cost

  • Tomorrow I go for a metal inplant in my right ankle at the 'Suraranee University Hospital' Korat, including 4 days inpatient treatment. Cost for everything, I was told, would be no more than 130,000 B

  • If you were on your death bed would you find time to haggle?

3 weeks ago I had open surgery for an incarcerated hernia with partial bowel removal (Strangulated).

2 hrs on the table under general anesthesia, 1 day in ICU then 5 days in private ward room.

Hospital - Phayathai Sriracha.

Total bill - Bt.88,000.

My out of pocket expenses - Bt.442.00.

Gotta love Thailand Social Security!

There are also huge price differences between private clinics.

I have been receiving inpatient treatment for more than 30 years, first at Pattaya International Clinic and for the last 20 years at Bangkok Pattaya Hospital.

The latter because they had a cardiology department.

My last operation in 2024 was supposed to cost around 600,000 THB more at BPH than at a private hospital in Korat!

Gallbladder removal and belly button repair...

Price in Korat: approx. 280,000 THB. I pay for my own treatment!

And I would only go to a public hospital if there was no other option!

I looked into the options in Pattaya and Siracha... No, thank you!

which hospital in Korat

Government hospitals usually want 5kbht, after treatment but before leaving.

Don't know how many Govt Hospitals you have been in, but the one I use, Nauresan University Hospital in Phitsanulok, want Bht 1000 deposit before any treatment or procedure.

Last year I needed my gall bladder removing. Bht 40,000 all in, op, meds, bed, food????, and for that a Bht 10,000 deposit was asked for.

One of my local gov hospitals tried that one on me.

Told me I'd die if I didn't have it removed.

I started exercising a bit more, dropped 20Kg, 13 years later gall bladder is fine.

I was in a government hospital last year for 8 days and all in including two MRI scans, xays, medicine, nursing, and a private room it was 36,000 baht. The care was good, the doctors were excellent, and I have no complaints whatsoever. I think it was comparable, if not better than the quality of an American hospital.

I don't know how any foreigner can complain about that kind of pricing. I believe I was charged the identical price a Thai would pay, and I was never asked to prove any sort of residency.

At that price you would think there were many additional services provided for customers enjoyment but sadly just great care and service.

Has anyone on the forum every experienced being required to pay a deposit for medical services like surgery?

Yes last year at a private hospital I had to pay 100,000 "deposit" before a procedure and was then rebated 31,000 afterwards.

Thai hospitals have a different interpretation of deposit.

Thanks for all the responses. I do work in Thailand but I work at a private school and my employer does not contribute.

Then you are not legally employed. End of story.

I think they overestimate the deposit in case there are any complications or unforeseen circumstances.

Nothing not "legal" about working for a private school.

Private schools are exempt from the SS Act and can chose to not opt in. Don't ask me why, but they can, and usually do.

It took my $hitty previous school 20 years to opt in...many private schools pull this stunt. Yet they offered Thai teachers a provident fund!
