In Phuket, a foreigner and his Thai wife stand accused of monopolising a renowned public viewpoint for their paragliding business, sparking tension with local tourists. A video circulating on social media reveals a conflict where a foreign man purportedly ordered a Thai tourist to vacate the Windmill Viewpoint near Phromthep Cape. Seen confronting the tourist, the foreigner insists on his claim by brandishing a document, despite the area being public land.

According to the tourist, the foreigner's Thai spouse arrived at the scene accompanied by a group, escalating the confrontation and prompting the tourist to contact local police. The couple later reportedly offered an apology in front of officers, attempting to resolve the situation amicably. The altercation has drawn widespread attention online, with many expressing disbelief that a foreigner could assert control over such a public space.

The foreign man asserted his right to the location based on his maintenance of the area for paragliding activities, supported by a training licence he presented. Nonetheless, local reactions have been strong. Netizens, and the Newshawk Phuket page, have demanded an investigation into why this individual believes he can monopolise a tourist attraction traditionally accessible to all.

Many Thais have chimed in on social media, recounting similar run-ins with the same individual in the past. One person mentioned confronting him years ago, suggesting the problem has lingered due to a lack of formal complaints being lodged. Despite mounting public pressure, local authorities, including officers from Chalong Police Station, have not yet taken definitive action, reported the THaiger.

Looking forward, the community is urging officials to intervene to ensure that public land remains free from personal encroachments. As the situation progresses, all eyes are focused on the local authorities' response to uphold public access and control unauthorised commercial use.

Key Takeaways

  • A foreigner and his wife claimed a public viewpoint in Phuket for their paragliding business.
  • The incident went viral, prompting calls for an investigation into the unauthorised use of public land.
  • Local authorities have yet to take action, despite growing public concern.

Dip<deleted> thinks he can get away with it because he's got a Thai wife and a few buddies.

Even paying off the cops might not be enough to salvage such an egregious stunt.

foreigners occuping public land for buisiness should keep a low profile and not upset the locals.

I see people up there hang gliding all the time. No more than 3 at a time. Always seem to be the same few guys. No sign that anything has been done to the area as far as I can see.

TBH, when I run past that area at about 6:00pm, the place is a zoo, particularly on Saturdays and Sundays. People getting ready to watch the sunset.

anyway, at least his wife had the sense to say to the police, can we just apologise and get out of here. These sort of things can turn nasty, just ask the Swiss guy who thought he could abuse people into moving of the steps in front of his villa.

I think the document he was brandishing was just his training licence.

Another Israeli i guess.

or a Swiss, remember last year that Swiss guy bossing Thai tourists off 'his' land: very wrong move!

when you live here long time, you know that all beaches in Thailand must have public access!

in other words: private beaches are illegal!

Just an example of the "Maybe I can get away with it" syndrome.

Just another example of the colonialist mindset. Imagine what we used to do to the natives before TV and human rights ...
