A foreign tourist in Phuket has faced fierce criticism after leaning out of a moving taxi on Sunday, 7 December. Thai motorists and social media users condemned the act as hazardous, with the incident captured and shared by another driver following the taxi. People widely circulated the alarming footage, prompting calls for action against both the tourist and the taxi driver.

The video reveals the tourist dangerously extending his body out of the passenger window, all while being filmed by his friend in the back seat. Unexpectedly, the taxi driver records the incident as he manoeuvres on a winding road. Concerns regarding safety were raised, as viewers could hear the Thai motorist chastising the participants for their irresponsible behaviour.

Public outcry followed the video's release, with demands for immediate repercussions. Many are urging the police to initiate an investigation, while others have appealed to the Land Transport Department to potentially revoke the driver's licence. Comments poured in, expressing anger and disbelief at the situation.

Although no specific legal provisions address this type of behaviour in Thailand, it may be classified as "reckless conduct" if it poses danger or leads to an accident. The consequences could vary, depending on the severity of the outcome. Local police have yet to provide any statement or take concrete measures relating to the incident, which took place in Patong.

The reckless act has drawn comparisons to a recent situation in Pathum Thani, where a Thai woman was seen jumping onto the bonnet of a moving car. The vehicle's slow speed prevented her from sustaining serious injuries, but it caused damage to the car. This incident also gained significant attention online, highlighting concerns about behaviours that risk public safety.

Key Takeaways

  • Foreign tourist criticised for leaning out of moving taxi in Phuket.
  • Public calls for action against both the tourist and the taxi driver.
  • Legal action remains possible under reckless conduct laws.

After that, posting that pretty much every driver on the road is drunk after 2 am???? That´s just a very big assumption, and definitely false information. We know that many people in Thailand drive drunk, but the majority don´t.

Put idiots together stupid things happen

Arrest the guy and throw him out of Thailand for the rest of his life. Then proceed and start teaching your own people on the dos and donts on Thailand's roads. Their performances are not ready for the circus or a matter of show off but I witness dangerous "stints" on a daily basis.

Do not blow up such idiocy of a non-Thai - get rid of him and focus on the more important things waiting around the corner in this beautiful country 😉

Yet the same netizens who are outraged and want action about this have no issues with a scooter riding on the wrong side of the road with 5 people on it including a new born on one arm and a toddler squeezed between two adults and another toddler in front of the rider none wearing helmets. They get a kick out of highlighting foreigners’ stupidity. It kind of says see we’re not the only stupid ones. The so called superior farangs can also be stupid.

Driver was far too far away from the street lights.

Next time drive right up against the left verge 👍

Do these people put their brains in a locker at the airport when they arrive ? I ask you.

facebook or other social sites it will be on no problem.Look at facebook and the amount of thais who are young attractive digital content people.Young ladies doing whatever they want and do the thais complain about them i think not or farangs

Everywhere we look these days we see netizen outrage, look if you're going to invite 30 to 40 million people into your country in order to stimulate your economy, you're going to get some fools, that's just the nature of things. Why people get so outraged by dumb people doing stupid stuff, it's beyond me.

Do these people who are outraged have an actual life? Do they have anything else to focus their energy on, and don't they have worthwhile things to get outraged about?

how do you they had brains in the first place ?

What happens in Phuket stays in Phuket

Nothing surprises me anymore of things quality tourists do in Thailand it's the money 💰 🤑 that counts here not the type of  tourist 😱

We know who to blame when the Thais start cracking down hard on everyone....

If he has an accident then insurance will deny paying hospital bills and the next thing is begging for money to pay for his hospital bills.

Things were more fun before the phone cameras and internet nanny's.  This is not a big deal, and certainly not newsworthy.

At least he was not the driver!!

Spare a thought for the poor taxi driver who must have been really stressed worrying who would pay the fare if his passenger succeeded in escaping through the window.

Some so called adults will always be childish. Hope his future kids look after him. As clearly he is too irresponsible to look after himself.

no big deal....count how many cycles with more than two riders, garbage trucks having guys hanging out or on tuks tuks off the back. The one I really like is the furniture truck or any truck with a big load and a couple of stupid guys sitting on top of that load...

This act is no different or no worse....

How moronically stupid do you have to be to imagine, even drunk well out of your mind, that this is somehow or other a 'stunt'. It's certainly a sign of a stunted brain.

At least walk on the roof or something genuinely worth watching. It's like these fools who crowd in front of a camera and go 'Waaahh! Look at us going Waaahh in Thailand ...' on Bangla Road.

Makes others feel embarrassed for them.

It's just so boring and embarrassing. Jesus wept, he should get a life! His current one's really not worth living if he thinks this is an exciting or notable stunt that will interest or impress others.

It's even worse than Teresa May 'dancing through cornfields'. Just embarrassing to watch.

At least the guys on the furniture (and the garbage) trucks have a purpose and little choice in the matter. This prat is just thick as pig's faeces.

Seems a bit harsh those calling for the taxi driver to be punished. I doubt he was happy about it or had much time to think what to do considering he was driving at the time. As for the idiot he's lucky some passing truck didn't take his head off. Happened last year in UK I think with a young woman hanging out of a moving train.

I agree.

The OP says "prompting calls for action against both the tourist and the taxi driver.."

I realise a lot of criticism is levelled against taxi drivers, especially on Phuket, but in this case the driver is  not to blame if he picks up passengers who turn out to be total morons with a death wish.

In fact I feel sorry for said driver.
