Great Island and great timing

22 miles off the coast of Thailand.

Looks good.

But, with 400 inhabitants, it might be too crowded.

I could live there if I had good internet and some hut made from concrete that could be easily cooled using AC.

Is land available for long-term lease?

If I had good internet, such as 3BB fiber, then I could build a one-room hut, 8 meters by 8 meters.

Large window facing the sea.

Enough for me.

The area of the island is 6 sq miles.

However, the hills take up much of the usable land, probably.

Still, defo something to think about.

Upon further investigation:

No way would I go there.

These days, there are many "upscale" resorts which cater to tourists.

The tourists want things like chocolate on their pillows.

These tourists are not wealthy.

But, the reason they flock there is to get that sort of faux-wealthy experience for a fraction of the price.

In coming to this tiny island, they will completely spoil it.

I have given up on ever finding a nice place by the ocean, for less than 50 million USD.

The reason for this is that so many slummers, the Proles of this world...

Now have access to cheap international flights.

Also, some nitwit YouTube blogger will visit some place, then post it on YouTube, and then what was once a fairly unspoiled place is completely...

RUINED.

I grew up before the internet.

Before the age of super cheap international flights.

In the 1960s, there were many places worth visiting and worth living for a decade or two.

Now, though, in truth, there is NOTHING.

The values of the traveler has changed..during the past 5 decades.

I hate the hippies, too, for being the first to become backpackers, ushering in this devastation.

Now that we have destroyed our world, there is no going back.

I will not dwell on the devastation, nor cry over it.

Nitwits, these days, have no clue what they have missed.

Really no point in travelling anywhere, these days.

We visited Koh Mak six years ago this month, just before Covid shut everything down.

It was a good experience and we would go back. Very few visitors when we were there.

If you go, check out the ghost resort on Koh Kham.

I was walking around the island and we went into some of the half finished rooms.

In one room out of no where a huge snake hissed at us and moved a little. I ran like a little bitch.

To the OP. Koh mak is very quiet not much to do. But a great place to relax and explore. Last time I was there no cars and no 711 on the island.

Koh Chang and Koh Kood are better.

I enjoyed Koh Kood more than Koh Kood, but Koh Kood is a great Island as well. Koh Chang? Haven’t been back for many years after I was so disappointed of how the Island developed. When you experienced that Island early 2000, you just can get rid of the memories how it used to be.

There is Golf carts for rent on Koh Mak for those who do not like to ride motorbikes. A few top notch nice resorts and a few good restaurants as well. Not much to do, but for holiday and just read a book and eat, not bad at all. Some nice scenery and viewpoints to

there are beaches to be found in Thailand that do not have many tourists, look in the south on the east and west coasts. IT is true in this age of cheap and easy travel it is hard to get away from the crowds, Check out New Zealand, west coast of the South Island, easy to get lost there, go to the town of Haast , leave the car and start walking, you will find a quite place.

Good to see someone who cares so much for his machinery.

Oh, Pattaya residents and their never-ending search for justification of why they are in Pattaya, which is definitely not prostitution.

Let me spin the excuse wheel 🎡: click—Thai cuisine, click—Buddhist temples, click—golf courses, click—cheaper prices, click… and today it’s discovering small islands in Gulf of Thailand. 🤿

OK.

But, how do I bookmark this comment, then...?

There's only one beach and hardly more than one resort that are worth it but both that beach and the island as a whole is interesting. Your can explore 90% of the island on a bicycle. I'd say 3 nights on Koh Mak and the rest on Koh Chang or Koh Kood is the ticket.

To make myself clear: there are more than one beautiful beaches but only one (the one where your boat arrives) gets cleaned.

  • 2 weeks later...

We have been near the Ao Kai Beach Pier for 4 weeks shortly after Covid. It was grandiose, we had to pinch ourselves from time to time to believe everything was true. If you like it quite, no load tourist attractions, slow life etc. you are absolutely right here. Get know to the island history from the island owners and their aim to make/ keep the island sustainable.

There was merely 1 weakness! In 2021 there have been a lot of Sandflies wherefore you really had to protect yourself sufficiently.

You have to stop looking at your old stomping grounds like Greenwich CT for your 50 mil places. I hear they are selling for up to 100 mil now but maybe you are on a small island off the coast. Skip Nantucket and the Vineyard and go for mainland Cape like  Osterville or ( shhhh) Cotuit. The a/c bills from October to May are super cheap too.

I'm not sure what the allure of islands is.  Plenty of nice beaches with ocean views on the mainland.  Basically continents are just really large islands.

More bungalows and island vibe. Better snorkelling.

Quiet and relaxing, but not the easiest place to get to. Don't go if you want a party. Not much around on the snorkeling front either.
