Renewing an out of date DL

Featured Replies

My 2 year DL expired in 2022 (Covid problems).

I tried a few agencies in Pattaya but they said because it was expired it would cost a fair bit to renew/extend it to the 5 year. (I'm on the system with my passport number on the DL).

I am about to get a new passport so would this mean I can get a "new" 2 year DL?

Are you on a long term visa at this point ?

do you have a licence from your 'home' country ?

Just start over on another 2 year.

Easy and cheap

I did this last year with a 3+ year expired 5 year license.  I had to do the written and driving tests.  I got a new 5+ year license.  Not difficult to do and not expensive.

Even though I had a valid foreign license I could not get a new 2 year license (i.e., start over) as they said a foreign license could only be converted once.

My UK Licence has expired. Getting a new one from the DVLA online proved impossible as their website refused my application (no reason given). So I wrote to them. Their response was:- 1. Visit a UK Post Office.  2. Apply by mail using Form D1 from the Post Office, (but they will not post it back to me outside the UK).

So I went to DLT Bangkok where I showed them my expired UK Licence. They wanted me to watch 5 hours of videos and take a written test. The video was like a Thai soap opera, no way could I sit through 5 hours of that <deleted>.

So I came away with nothing. All this after obtaining a health certificate, a certificate of residence from immigration and a TM30 from my Landlord.

Apparently it is easy with DLT if you have a valid UK Licence.

Where did you do take your Test?

I have a valid UK DL and IDP.

That's irrelevant once you've had a thai driving licence

Bangkok DLT 1.  But as said above it you have already 'converted' the other licenses count for nothing.

You have a better suggestion?

You will need to do an online test, then make an appointment, using the Smart Queue App, go to the DLT, on day of appointment, with a cert of residence for the licence you want(if car and motorcycle, you need 2 separate certs), and a medical cert from a doctor, (one for each type of vehicle), sit another online test, ( 2 if for car and motorcycle), 50 questions, pass is 45, then come back a week later and do a physical test, you will need to drive a car and motorcycle.... supplied by you.

For a converted license into Thai, both car and motorbike, the going rate for some agents are around 8.000 baht. So renewing an expired license couldn't cost more than that with them. You'll do the same process, one very easy straight forward test, reaction and color, and a very easy driving "test". No medical or such needed, just your 1 year minimum visa/extension in your passport.

But you would need to do the 50 questions (45 correct answers) as well with an agent for that fee, which might be a little trickier. I did mine at Banglamung a few months back, nailed 48 correct answer at first attempt, so its very doable.

The one in bangkok rents the car 200 baht, motor cycle 125 cc is provided, maybe it was 100 baht for me. 50questions  45 or above pass. Motorcycle test written is a bit different. Please study. The office there gives you a qr code for practice, but about 20% of the questions that you need to know are in the video you must watch. Good luck.

Just curious when renewing, how many days/weeks before expiration can you renew? And also, is there a grace period going over the expiration date?

Thanks in advance

To save time the video can be watched online at home, it's a block of short videos and once watched is valid for 30 days I think, just show the DLT a picture of the QR code and your good to go.

6 months in advance, 1 year after (although any insurance may not be valid for that period).
