  • What a moronic idea.

  • Yet more pushing for a digital panopticon  we should all hope this idiotic idea fails totally.

  • Inconveniencing 99% of the population and 100% of tourists because they can't (or won't) tackle corrupt government workers and politicians.

This is nothing other than an attempt to force us into a cashless (and therefore slave) society. They have to find a way to get people to accept the unacceptable, and what better way to do it than to say that they are doing it to go after corrupt politicians. Everyone will agree that politicians are corrupt, and this sounds like a plausible way to catch them. But let me ask you: Do you think that (corrupt) politicians are going to propose a system to end corruption? Or is it more likely that they are going to propose a system to remove what little freedom we have left?

ATMs can go as tourists won't want to pay 250 baht to withdraw 2 or 3000 baht (20 or 30 notes max)

Get a better bank if yours doesn't refund that fee.

Of course, but it's a brilliant idea if you are the government. They are copying the debt ridden West and it is how this and those governments will rule and control us lowly peons. Keep us exactly where they want us, under their control, instead of them being under our control.

India did similar on 8 November 2016 when PM Modi declared that 1000 and 500 rupiah notes would become worthless at midnight.

The guys that refill the ATM will need to work a lot of overtime to keep them stocked with red notes.

I was in India when they were implementing the denomination change. There were queues around the block at every ATM. Hideous mess, which achieved nothing in the end. I paid all my bills in advance, (package), or by credit card and tipped in GBP or USD cash, which was highly appreciated.

In Switzerland they still have a 1000 Franc note, work that out in Thai Baht. There have been some calls to do away with it, to stop money laundering.

But with the well-known Swiss banking system, that is unlikely to happen.

Despite its reputation, I have found Swiss banks to be pretty inept, and their AML overrated.

What's the place I am living got to do with it?  I have loads of them, all small change Bht 1 and under go into a big piggy bank. I think my Mrs tried to get rid of some at the bank last year, but was refused.

Mine go in the bin.

On almost the daily basis we continue to hear absolutely ridiculous proposals and this one has to top the list. It was an absolute catastrophe in India when they tried this, and yet Thailand seems incapable of learning from history.

The goon said that cancelling these notes wouldn't impact honest citizens, as most use digital banking.

Well that is complete nonsense, as many Thais use cash and if anything they should be issuing 5,000 and 10,000 baht notes not downgrading the 1,000 baht note, which has always been an inconvenience as it's only $30.

If the the EU and Switzerland can have large notes, why can't Thailand?

Let us hope this never comes to pass, and let us hope that idiots who suggest policy like this are shamelessly ridiculed for their stupidity.

The Thai Pakdee Party has announced a plan to cancel the 1,000 and 500 baht banknotes throughout Thailand. This move aims to combat corruption and disrupt illicit cash flows.

And kill tourism

What a moronic idea.

Why? USA, EU, Singapore +++ are among countries which has abandoned high nomination bills. Living here the only place I still use cash is at 7/11 and Immigration (guess why they dont use Prompt Pay) and are all for the suggestion.

The supermarkets will have to have super large cash draws.

Can't 👀 this working majority of the population and tourists use cash

A other useless idea 💡 😒

Better crank up the printing press, going to need a lot of 100,s

BIG BS!

Well I suppose it would make it more difficult to lose 1000 Baht in the back of a taxi.

Like they say one can't fix stupid  .

LOL This party has no power at all- not even a single seat- nor are they ever expected to have any power. This is like Trump destroying the White House for <deleted>s and giggles

Like I posted earlier, I don't believe these clowns (Thai PakDee Party) hold a single MP position, I think they are delegated to the scraps for a reason. It's just background noise, they just needed a sensational press release to get noticed.

A 1,000 baht bill is a whopping 30 dollars....Hardly a high value bill,And the 500 baht is worth 15 whole dollars.

The 100 sgd Singapore bill is worth 2,420 baht

Singapore also has a 1,000 sgd and a 10,000 sgd bills that are still in use but being phased out out......

Show 20.000 THb at immigration on arrival, How ?

I don't like it.

I use cash for all my day to day in person transactions.

This would be a major pain in the a$$ for me.

Maybe they should stop all notes just use one baht or 5 baht coins

Been here 20 years and I have heard of hundreds of idiotic government proposals but this one by far is the most impractical, nonsensical, inconvenient, and I would assume universally unpopular ideas ever to be proposed. Who votes for these idiots?

Simply, Idiots do and their are a lot of them.🤣

I suspect Ben  Heart will do a YT report on this!

A few years ago, I bought my car here with cash, all in 1000 notes. I can still see the girl counting them. When I asked if she didn't have a counting machine, she had to admit that she didn't.
That's going to be something when I buy my next car (if I ever do).

Incidentally, the 500 euro note still exists.

The targets of this will just move to a different currency or a high value commodity like gold

That may be true, but what if I exchange a 10 baht gold piece.

there certainly are, just look in the mirror. 🤦‍♂️

Seems a good way to remove political opponents.

Found guilty of  gaining 100 million baht by means of corruption, and death sentence carried out within 15 days and no appeal to the head man possible.

Straight from the CCP playbook.

I reckon there would be a few quivering sphincters around.

Seems like the coins less than one baht aren't needed.
