Why is Trump killing off clean energy?

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

President Donald Trump has never been a fan of wind farms. Now he has delivered a “haymaker” to the clean energy industry, ordering a pause on the construction of five East Coast offshore projects that were slated to power nearly 2.7 million homes.

The president’s decision “marked an escalation of a yearlong effort to shut down the industry,” said Politico. Electricity customers may soon feel the effects. A New England grid operator warned that Trump’s move “could send power prices soaring,” while a Virginia utility said the pause hurts its ability to “keep up with rising electricity consumption from data centers.” American voters are angry about affordability issues, and Trump’s decision “is running contrary to that in my opinion,” said Tim Ennis, a power market analyst at GridStatus.

Trump is making Americans pay more for electricity “because he is angry at windmills,” Dean Baker said in his newsletter. It is true that, as Trump often says, windmills kill birds, which is the “case with any structure.” But “wind energy is cheap” and costs less to produce than coal — about the same as natural gas — all while avoiding greenhouse gases. All this comes while China is building as much wind and solar capacity “as the rest of the world combined.” Americans “will pay a high price for Donald Trump’s irrational hatred of wind energy.”

It is interesting to compare the advantages and disadvantages of wind power:

Advantages

1. Renewable and clean: turbines generate electricity without burning fuel, releasing zero greenhouse gases or air pollutants.

2. Cost-Effective: Utility-scale wind is one of the lowest-priced energy sources available.

Installation costs can be considerable however as wind is free there are very low long-term operating costs.

3. Space Efficient: While wind farms cover large areas, the actual footprint of each turbine is small. This allows the land between turbines to be used for other purposes like farming or ranching.

4. Job creation and revenue for local communities: The industry creates thousands of jobs in manufacturing, installation, and maintenance. It also provides steady income for local communities through tax payments and land-lease agreements.

5. Low Water Consumption: Unlike nuclear or fossil fuel plants, wind turbines do not require water for cooling, which is a critical benefit in water-scarce regions.

Disadvantages

1.  Intermittency: Wind does not blow at a constant speed therefore turbines do not produce electricity all the time leading to necessary backup energy sources or expensive storage solutions to maintain a stable grid.

2. Impact on Wildlife: Rotating blades can be hazardous to birds and bats. Research suggests between 140,000 and 500,000 birds die from turbine collisions annually in the U.S. alone.

3. Aesthetics and Noise: Some residents consider wind turbines to be an eyesore. The mechanical hum and aerodynamic whooshing sound annoys some locals.

4. Remote Locations: The best wind resources are often in remote or offshore areas far from cities. This necessitates the construction of expensive, high-voltage transmission lines to bring the power to urban centres.

5. Technical Interference: Turbines can sometimes interfere with radar systems used for air traffic control or weather forecasting, as well as television and radio signals.

When you got the infrastructure at place, and everything is paid with tax payers money, and they justified the investment by rising the energy prices (KW prices) by tenfolds, yeah, they got a good solutions for all the sacrifices that produces as clean energy as possible for a long time, but still not efficient enough. We will see the tool on the nature from mining, waste, infrastructure, and everything else that is necessary to keep these facilities updated and maintained.

A post containing an incorrect name was removed. Please debate the topic politely. Thank you.

Because "Clean Energy" isn't clean.  That's marketing hype.  Nor is it efficient, nor is it cost effective.  The money that was shoved into so-called "clean energy" would have been a better value by investing it in nuclear and fusion energy.  Once fusion energy is commercially viable, all of this "clean energy" will be shoveled into a landfill where the components that they are made of will leach into the soil and water supplies and create toxic nightmares.

Wind, Solar and other renewables can’t be disrupted by foreign wars and there’s no need to go to war to obtain it.

Back in the UK clean energy makes our electricity 3x more expensive than anywhere else.

But in New England they expect the exact opposite.

But I do believe, everyone living in sunny countries should be making their own energy to break the monopoly of the large energy companies who really don't work for the interests of the people.

Why is Trump killing off clean energy?

His well known support of the oil and gas industry is the main reason.

He supports oil and gas strongly because they make giant regular contributions to his election / re-election funds, and they expect something in return: kill renewable developments.

And because they are not a scam. There is that aspect too, which is often overlooked by the usual suspects.

These quotes from The Don ... maybe has to do with de-coupling from China, it seems.

“I don’t like wind. The wind blows, then it doesn’t blow. The things cost a fortune, they’re made in China"

“By the way, you know where the panels come from?” he added. “100% of the solar panels come from China.”

"Back in the UK clean energy makes our electricity 3x more expensive than anywhere else."

Stop making things up.

Electricity is very expensive in the UK. But the real villain is natural gas and lack of energy storage capacity:

Why Britons pay so much for electricity

Almost all the time, expensive gas sets the price

Electricity in Britain is expensive because it is not renewables that set the wholesale price, but gas...

The most obvious solution would be to increase the amount of time that Britain can manage without recourse to gas-fuelled electricity. This would mean that a cheaper form of electricity would determine the price more of the time. But it would require lots more investment in renewables. Though government efforts to speed up approval for solar parks and onshore wind farms are encouraging, sufficient extra supply is unlikely to come on stream quickly.

Keep burning dead plants as that makes big oil very very happy and wealthy...why they may even give Trump an airplane or a battleship along with a few billion crypto.

Truly amazing that in 2025 when the entire planet has energy bursting all around from wind solar fusion water volcanoes waves and who knows what other sources may provide solutions that big oil has managed to pretty much block any and all development of energy that does not line their pockets.

You mean these empty unbacked assertions?

Capacity is meaningless. California gets over 40% of its annual electricity from solar, while Texas gets less than 10% of its electricity from solar.

Californians pay more than twice as much as Texans for electricity.

California has to buy electricity from other states at night, and has to pay the same states to take their excess electricity during the day.

I think solar is great, and it is cheap when used sensibly, but sensibility goes out the window with mandates and subsidies.

What they should be mandating, though would be illegal to, that every rooftop, if applicable, should of solar.   If they really cared about anything.   But no long term profits in that.

As always, the left has to deceive. Eliminating mandates and subsidies is not the same as killing off.

If it were cheaper for electricity providers in the US to produce and provide electricity cheaper with solar than with fossil fuels and nuclear, there would be no more fossil fuel or nuclear facilities in the US.
