Expats on frozen pensions

Petition
Ensure the annual pension increase applies to all pensioners living abroad

We want the Government to ensure that pensioners get thier annual increase if they live abroad in certain countries. Currently, some people do not receive increases even if they have worked 50 years in the UK prior to retiring abroad.
You can see and sign the petition here >  https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/746473

Sorry, but you're p*ssing in the wind on this one.

No UK government will ever 'unlock' the frozen pensions...

(This from someone who 2 weeks ago returned to live in the UK after 23 years in Asia, with one driving factor in my decision being the frozen pensions).

Yes, it's a pointless cause, even if it's one I support. It would be electoral suicide for any party to support this, especially in the current anti-foreigner climate in the UK. I wouldn't be surprised if a nationalistic party like Reform UK decide to remove all pensions from people residing overseas!

But why are the pensions of expats living in the Philippines and some other countries not frozen?

This is because years ago the PI government signed an agreement with the UK government, primarily to protect the pension rights of the many Filipinos who are working in the health sector. This is a 2-way agreement, and so British pensioners who live in the PI also have an index-linked pension.

Several other countries (eg Turkey, Mauritus) also signed similar agreements, but those countries who did this are few and far between. UK pensioners living in EU and several other non-EU European countries also have index-linked pensions.

By the way, (and I researched this a few years ago), the Thai government did put in a formal request to the UK several decades ago to index-link pensions, similar to the PI. Their request wasn't even acknowledged by the UK government.

A couple of months ago, whilst living in Laos, I was well down the road to relocate to the PI on their SRRV Expanded Courtesy visa, which provides a lifelong visa for scientists (amonst others), at a low cost. But after some 'interesting interactions' with the Lao police on Christmas Day, I changed my mind about staying in Asia, and I moved back to the UK 2 weeks ago, after 23 years living/working in Myanmar, Laos and Thailand (all where the UK pension is frozen).

Now back in the UK, my pension is no longer frozen, (although with the recent cold weather here, other important parts of my body ARE frozen!)

What accommodation did you find in the UK ?

I could never understand the reasoning. USA and most EU countries and even Israel get the COLAs the same as in UK. Yet most commonwealth countries like Canada, Aus, NZ do not.

I 'thought' the reasoning was based on equal numbers of Brits living in the validated countries because equal numbers of nationals from those countries were in the UK. But I really don't know the rationale any longer. Anyway, it's a dead issue not least of which because it has few advocates in Westminister.

I managed to find a private landlord who was happy to rent to me without any credit agency check. It's a house in Minehead, 750 quid/month (which to me is a rop-off but apparently normal cost now!). but all OK

I don't know about AU and NZ, but my Canadian Pension Plan benefits are adjusted for cost of living each year. My Canadian Old Age Supplement is adjusted 4 times a year.

Right. They are talking about UK expat pensions that are frozen in most countries - including in Canada. So if you're a Brit who retired to Canada it will never increase.

U.S.A. is on the OK list...🙃

USA makes sense - given many Brits retired there and many American pensioners in UK. Many other countries are questionable - Israel? Why?

I guess Bristol is the biggest centre within reach. About 2 hour round trip?

The house I rented has 2 bedrooms, so I'm willing to share the rent. Applicants need to be female, young and south-east Asian heritage... :)

Me too, i like living alone but I wouldn't want to be isolated with little chance of social interaction leading to potential cabin fever daily

One of my pals on this forum (dave2) lived alone, they didn't find his body until he started stinking out the condo block.

Another pal in the UK collapsed unconscious for 3-4 days before they found him.

If you're old and alone, you need regular visitors/contact .........

Did you bring your volunteer police uniform from your heyday in Phuket? With a whistle you can patrol the parking lots of the grocers holding the scofflaws who abandon their shopping trolleys in the parking areas. You can celebrate wearing it when your pension increases in 5 months and 2 weeks time.

Does this mean you will never return to Laos, Thailand or Myanmar?
