Possible moving from Phuket to Hua Hin.

Featured Replies

Hi all Hua Hin experts,

For sure this is asked many time but i can't really find up to date information.

As Phuket is getting crowded and living standards going down we are thinking about moving to Hua Hin sometime end of the year.

We will go to Hua Hin for a holiday off-course to have a feel for it and to look around.

But i would like to get as much as possible information beforehand.

About us,

We are a European couple (Dutch, German and around 60 year old) and are living in Phuket for a long time. (37 years for me)

Very mobile (Have a car and both drive scooters) and are in good health.

we are looking for a bungalow type of house with swimming poll if possible for long term rent. (preferable 3 year terms or longer) with a budget of around 20.000 - 25.000 Baht but this is not fixed.

As we are very active in the (expat) community it would be nice to life somewhere were there are more foreigners and possible not to far away from the beach or other places like shops and restaurants.

Hopefully there are some expats living in Hua Hin who are willing to come in contact with us so i can ask them question when i have them and for advice if required. 🙂

Thanks very much.

Now would be a great time to go to Hua Hin, as you can catch it at it's worst. High season congestion, along with staying a couple weekend to see how that is, as they flood in from Bangkok.

Experience the burning season .... today's low, some readings AQI 75+ / PM.25 30+

With some areas, much higher ...

Please consider somewhere else - Hua Hin already has too many expat residents and too many tourists.

2 decades ago it was enjoyable, but now?

A reasonable number of former expat residents of Hua Hin have moved south to Pran Buri or Pak Nam Pran to get away from the congestion, etc.

I would also recommend looking at Pran Buri.

You might be trading the crowds and cleaner air of Phuket for the less crowded but more air polluted Hua Hin region.

First of all what is close to the beach?

There is a few fenced living areas around 94 you could start looking at, but rent a 2 bedroom appartment up in condo 88 to start with, and take it from there. Get to know the area and search out your possibilities.

Soi 94

There are fenced villa communities like this in this area with different nationalities, and quite relaxed and quiet. I preferred to live in condo 88 at the time I lived there for 3 years.

I will not bring up positive or negative aspects about either Phuket or Hua Hin, but I will mention that I moved to Hua Hin from Phuket after 23 years in Phuket when covid came as my wife was already established in Hua Hin a few years earlier due to a better position and better pay than in Phuket. I have regretted the move every day since and will move back to Phuket later this year. I will finally mention that I think it mostly depends on how we want to live and the environment and society we want around us.

The good thing to say about Hua Hin is the weather and stable climate. Pollution average.

However I like the west coast and the Islands. If I couldn't travel as much as I do, I would had settled in Krabi.

Agree 100%, Krabi, maybe Surat Thani or Phang Nga, as the landscape and closeness to Andaman would make for a much better retirement. Surf you can actually play in, without concerns of ear infections, that's location dependent.

If daughter not at Krung Thep, we probably be at Krabi.

In general we love Phuket where I life for over 37 years but our rental contract is coming up for renewal and affordable decent houses (no condominiums) are very hard to find in case we can’t renew the contract.

We heard from others that Hua Hin could be a nice alternative specially I have to be in Bangkok on a regular basis for work.

Therefore, I’m trying to get as much information as possible.

Do you drive or fly to BKK for work ? If flying, maybe consider Chumphon or Surat Thani, or even NST, since having airports. The commute to BKK from HH is not really a pleasant one, as we do it quite often, living 100 kms south of HH.

There is the train of course, (HH - BKK) and sort of convenient, though doesn't save any time.

Krabi got airport.

Don’t get me wrong, many places is great around in Hua Hin, but I think you have to estimate for a decent house with swimming pool, or a gated community with swimming pool 10k higher than your proposed rent. I might be wrong, but 5% of marked value still accounts for houses as apartments in Hua HiN as elsewhere. Condo much easier to find something within your budget.

The air pollution is especially bad this year, and I can't believe the influx of the elderly. It's like an old age home. I had to go to AIS yesterday to update my passport information. 1 hour wait and some of the dumbest most stupid farangs I have ever seen were bothering the staff with inane questions. Unlike last year, few Chinese, and reduced numbers of Russians to the point where the Russian bureaucrat types are no longer evident. Demographic is mostly European aged 75+. Few young families. Traffic is heavy, but not as bad as this time last year. Water quality from HH town right down to Khao Takaib is awful.

Looks like a prison parolee party this week. All sorts of Motorcycle farang members wearing their brands are in town,Badgers, Nomads, and they are all 65 years+. Some of them look like clowns with their saggy tattooed skin and multiple piercings.

I used to like Hua Hin, but it has lost its charm. So many new condo developments going up. I see that the tragedy of the Blueberry Apartment/Hotel has come to an end with the bank people having finalized the removal. Soon a new condo will go up across from Market Village and the beach will be ruined in that area. Centara has embarked on its massive expansion, that will change that district forever. The small residential areas are being crowded out and it is difficult to cross the busy main road. There are lots of condos and villas on the market, as many Europeans are trying to dump them and leave. Too many of the beachside condo units are cursed by short time rentals and timeshares such that the transient population doesn't care about the area. I am actually thinking of just walking away. Central America is becoming more interesting.

Unfortunately, sadly I must agree.

I enjoyed my first visit to Hua Hin in 1977 (for memory; it could have been 1978).

I enjoyed moving here almost a decade and a half ago.

But, now ... everything is Patong2021's post is correct.

If you thinking about pollution, the west coast is on average much better option the Hua Hint, just look at the pollution apps and see.
