Trump Links Nobel Peace Prize Loss to Threats Over Greenland

Featured Replies

U.S. President Donald Trump has reignited tensions over Greenland, linking his desire to control the island to his snub for the Nobel Peace Prize. In a recent interview, Trump hinted at imposing tariffs on European nations if no agreement is reached, causing concern about a potential trade war reminiscent of 2025. The European Union is considering retaliation in response to Trump's intensified efforts to assert sovereignty over Greenland from Denmark.

The situation risks destabilising NATO; it is already under pressure due to conflicts like the war in Ukraine and discussions about defence spending. European industries are on edge, and financial markets have reacted with apprehension, fearing a repeat of past economic volatility. Trump's recent communications further complicate intergovernmental relations, with Norway's Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere attempting to de-escalate the situation.

After Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado received the Nobel Peace Prize instead of Trump, the conflict escalated. In text messages to Stoere, Trump expressed dissatisfaction and questioned Denmark's claim over Greenland against threats from Russia or China. Trump announced potential tariffs on various EU countries starting February 1 unless the U.S. gains control of Greenland.

Danish and Greenlandic leaders have rejected the pressure, asserting local autonomy and adherence to international law. Denmark's military is currently conducting exercises in Greenland, demonstrating its stance on sovereignty. Meanwhile, EU leaders are gathered to discuss their response, which may include implementing tariffs on U.S. imports or employing the rarely used "Anti-Coercion Instrument."

Norway and Germany are preparing to discuss conflict with Trump at the World Economic Forum in Davos. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent downplayed assumptions that the dispute is linked to the Nobel Prize, framing Greenland as a strategic asset. However, the potential for tariffs and trade barriers remains a concern for transatlantic relations.

EU leaders are set to meet in Brussels for an emergency summit to deliberate on their course of action. Measures under consideration could initiate automatically after a suspension period if tensions do not ease. The situation is complex, but Britain’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer has called for calm, indicating he does not believe Trump will resort to military intervention for Greenland, reported Reuters.

Key Takeaways:

  • Trump connects Greenland control ambitions to Nobel Prize snub.

  • EU weighs response options amid trade war concerns.

  • Discussions at Davos may influence ongoing disputes.

The ABC in Australia has a breakdown of a text message to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

Apparently, this message came after the Norwegian Nobel Committee did not award Mr Trump the Nobel Peace Prize:

Let me get this straight. The Nobel committee, named after a famous Swedish scientist and inventor, with no formal ties to any sovereign country that awards various prizes for endeavours that benefit the world just happens to be situated in Norway. Trump sends threatening letters about taking over Greenland, which is part of Denmark, to Norway, because the committee is based there, and Finland because it's next door, but ignores Sweden from where the person who the committee was named after was born.

The letter was also copied to several other NATO and EU members

Norway is a NATO member but not an EU member, Finland is a member of both, as is Denmark.

He states, like a very spoiled child that because he didn't get the Nobel Peace prize he can now wage war, which he has already done several times anyway by attacking Nigeria, Yemen, Somalia, Iran, Iraq, Syria and Venezuela; but claims to have stopped eight and a half wars, ineffectively in several cases.

And he has now invited those other peace loving giants of Putin and Lukashenko to pay a billion dollars to join the Gaza Peace Board; soon to be renamed 'oligarchs 'r' us'.

America - is this is what you consider to be a worthy candidate for President?

Does the idiot not realise that any action against NATO would probably result in all USA forces being asked to leave all NATO bases overseas? How will he then support Israel?

Most of us don't. The Democrats put up such a damaged candidate last presidential election that too many people stayed home.

I HOPE the Democrats learn from this lesson, though if history is any indicator, it's a toss up.

Trumps a moron. If it wasn’t for school shootings you would think they had no education system there. How did he get elected?

How Putin and Xi, little Rocket Man must be rolling in the aisles in laughter at this totally insane action by DJT IMHO. If he continues without the US Congress and SCOTUS slamming him down, then yeah our bases in previously friendly nations is over plus any other country will definitely not join with the US for anything! I sure hope the US public is awake now even if they slept through the last election so that this buffoon will soon be forced out by impeachment IMHO too. I as an American, am thoroughly ashamed and embarrassed by this antics.

Trump is deranged, and has been for some time. How else do you explain "If I don't get the peace medal I will attack and invade you"... threatening the country that does not even possess Greenland... My understanding regarding the prizes is that all of them except peace medal are given in Sweden and that is given in Norway. Whatever... Donald is so ignorant/stupid and or demented to consider those other Scandinavian countries are Denmark. One of his subpar advisers ought to have enough smarts to point these things out, but Trump has rid himself across the board of any advisor or cabinet member that even a smattering of competence. All they can do is obey and flatter.

Right, he's been deranged for "some time" and RW politicians and media have been covering it up for years. They sould be held accountable! 😀

So he puts NATO and the European alliance at risk because little donnie didn’t get the peace prize. Bear in mind this is a 79 year old man, albeit with dementia and delusions of grandeur, who his whole life has been a petulant man child if he didn’t get what he thought he was entitled to. And of course in true trump stupidity forgets that it’s Norway who awards the Nobel prize, not Greenland or Denmark. The whole recent debacle with Machado giving it to trump makes him a laughing stock to the world and emphasises just how pathetic he really is. And of course he’ll be ridiculed for it because everybody knows he didn’t win it. What a pitiful, feeble and miserable little man he is.

Yes deranged and getting worse. In his demented mind, he doesn’t know that Norway has nothing to do with the award and with the sovereignty of Denmark. If Biden say that, he will be plastered all over the news and podcasts. The 25th amendment beckon for this deranged President as America descend into a rogue country.

Just pointing out the lies and ineptitude of the left that led to Trump getting elected.

If you guys had any sense you'd learn from this, but fortunately you don't so you will have to be content sniping from the sidelines.

Trump's absolutely the biggest crybaby in the world. Imagine any other politician making such a selfish, ludicrous comment. Just when you think the plummeting Trump chaos elevator has finally crashed into bedrock, it takes another plunge lower.

Sadly, what's waiting in the wings to replace him (the plan all along) is even worse because not as dumb in the classical sense. President Vance anyone? Jesus wept.

1) And therefore the rest of the A,mericans voted the "grab them by the puzzy" as president ? In a normal country such a man goes in prison. Out of the 335 million inhabitants, not two better candidates could be found ?

2) With one year in office, no Democrat+Republican mayority could move this totally rancounous, insane, narsistic idiot aside. Not even an attempt was done. The High Court did nothing to him, breaking several constitutional rules. So, hit entire USA as hard as possible, whatever the consequences might be:

  • dump all shares and treasury paper, with result the US Stock exchange + US currency will fall down

  • do not buy US goods nor services anymore

  • = no credit cards ( as are all-US), but pay with other means, fly with carriers using Airbus, but not Boeing, do not buy nor watch US films and TV series + documentations, no Californian almonds etc, no pecans, no raisins, no corn, no wheat, no peanuts from the USA, no bourbon of jeans, no Hardley Davidson, etc

  • Cancell the orderd weaponry like F35's, but buy Grippen or Rafale, as.. when they are finally delivered, Putin is gone already for years.

  • And.. finally start to build up own ICT, own weaponry, own sallellites, own farmacy, own data centres, own streaming services with European/Rest of the World content.

We need NOTHING from this always "shoot to kill "nation
