A newborn baby girl was found dead inside a cardboard box discarded in a rubbish bin in Bangkok’s Huai Khwang district in the early hours of Thursday, prompting an urgent police investigation. The discovery was made by a refuse collector who alerted authorities after opening the box during routine waste collection. Police said the infant is believed to have died within the previous 12 hours.

The incident was reported at 02:50 on 29 January 2026, when Pol Lt Col Nakhon Tangruamthap, an investigating officer at Huai Khwang Police Station, received a notification of a deceased infant at Soi Pracha Uthit 1 in Huai Khwang district. Police officers attended the scene along with forensic specialists, a forensic pathologist from Ramathibodi Hospital, and volunteers from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation. The area was secured to preserve evidence.

At the scene, officers found the body of a newborn female wrapped in a white T-shirt and placed inside a brown cardboard box that had been thrown into a rubbish bin outside an apartment building. Authorities reported no visible wounds or signs of injury on the body. Preliminary assessments indicated the baby had been dead for no more than 12 hours before being found.

A waste collector told police that he noticed a heavy cardboard box inside the rubbish bin while collecting refuse in front of the apartment building. He said he initially did not suspect anything unusual and transferred the box with other waste to prepare it for loading onto the rubbish truck. While working, he noticed a strong smell and saw a white T-shirt, which he picked up to wipe his hands.

The worker said he was “very shocked” when he realised the T-shirt was wrapped around the body of a newborn baby inside the box. He immediately called a colleague to confirm what he had discovered before notifying the police. Officers then cordoned off the area to allow forensic teams to carry out a detailed examination.

Police said investigators are questioning people in the area and reviewing closed-circuit television footage from nearby buildings and surrounding streets. The aim is to identify the person or persons who abandoned the body and to determine the circumstances leading to the infant’s death.

Thaitabloid reported that the baby’s body was transferred to Ramathibodi Hospital for a full post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. Police said further updates would be provided once forensic results and CCTV analysis are completed.

Where can pregnant teens bring their babies for a safe delivery and care and perhaps adoption or orphanage? I haven't heard of any facilities like this. I'd donate to prevent such tragedies..

I don't know in how many countries mothers put embarrassing oops in trashcans to die. Probably every one, including the first world. In fact, the Spanish word for pregnant is embarazada, embarrassed because everybody knows what you've been doing under the sheets.

But, yes, I did mean in Thailand. Second highest rate of teen pregnancy in the world, after the US.

Embarazada is the correct Spanish adjective for "pregnant," not "embarrassed". It is a common false friend for English speakers, as it means expecting a child, while the English word "embarrassed" translates to avergonzada

Was it a crime? Or was it the result of someone not getting the support she needed at a time when she needed it most?

If the baby was alive, it was murder. if not, then disposing of a body is also a crime. A baby can always find an adoptive home if the birth parents don't want the responsibility, musc like leaving your kids with grandma and going to the big cities to work, and rarely seeing the children..........This is AI but what the laws say......Sections 366/1 to 366/4 of the Criminal Code are specifically designed to protect the rights of the deceased, including their dignity, honor, and reputation, making the desecration or illegal disposal of a corpse a public offense.

  1. Concealment of Crime: If the disposal is part of covering up a death, it is prosecuted in conjunction with murder or manslaughter (Sections 288-294), with severe penalties for destroying evidence.

  2. Legal Procedures: Thai law requires that when someone dies, the death must be reported within 24 hours to the police or a registrar to receive a death certificate, making illegal disposal a direct violation of these procedures..

Or it could be an act of a distraught person who didn't know what to do, perhaps a teen who couldn't face her family. You have no idea as to what a mother might go through under such circumstances. I would say the sickness is in your mind for judging this without knowing anything about what happened or the emotional state of the mother. Your lack of humanity is appalling.

I think stillborn is the most likely, or some freak accident like strangulation by the umbilical cord, especially if it was a non hospital birth.

Yeah well we will have to agree to disagree if you think I'm crazy for pointing out how sick this is.

If I am feeling distraught now, is it ok if I kick you in the head? That's not an excuse for anything.

She had no mature adults in her life to help guide her through this?

It takes 2 (two people, male and female to make a baby), why am I only reading negativity towards the mother.

Is the father not accountable?

Good Goddess, Nick, you can never bring yourself to specifics!

A lot are accountable, from her and the father, to her parents who she either couldn't turn to from embarrassment, or weren't involved enough in her life to make a difference in her thinking. She could have gone to a hospital or other places to have the baby.

Concealing and disposing of the body, alive or expired, is already a crime. The least scenario is that she didn't think of going to a safe place for the birth. The worst is murdering a child she was too embarrassed to reveal. In between there are other things, all of which she should have shown responsibility for.

Human life means so little in some places, and this is shown how they treat children in general. And how they are raised.

Father is long gone, of course. I know of one case where a baby was brought just to visit the father's family. He jumped out the window and ran away.

Can't expect much more, living in poverty. Same as it ever was.

Our duty to the babies are helping the mothers, starting with honest ex ed in pathom.

I agree with your perspective, but I suspect the baby's father may have left her as soon as he found out she was pregnant. Unfortunately, this seems to be a pattern with most Thai men in these situations.

While the Thai law generally favors mothers, many are too scared to take action and demand child support due to fear of retaliation from the father or his family.

In this case, I believe the mother may have given birth alone in her apartment, and the baby was stillborn. Overwhelmed by shock, she might have acted the way she did in such a devastating moment. I truly hope she isn't subjected to severe legal punishment; she's already burdened enough with the loss of her child.
